Gay Ugandans Attempt Suicide after Anti-Gay Law is Signed

Uganda Anti-Gay Law - February 2014 - BellaNaija 01

Following President Jonathan‘s signing of the same sex bill, Uganda has followed suit.

On Monday 24th February 2014, President Yoweri Museveni signed the Anti-gay bill into law. The law is aimed at criminalizing all homosexual relations; offenders face a 14-year jail term while more convictions may lead to life sentences.

CNN’s Christiane Amanpour spoke to one of Uganda’s gay rights activists Pepe Julian via a telephone conversation from the nation’s capital city Kampala.

She revealed that members of the gay community are afraid of losing their lives and would rather take their lives than live under the law.

This is so sad. I am in tears for them. African governments already do so little for our people, why now go the extra mile to murder and jail our innocent people.
That whole “the west” argument also perplexes me because it is the West that started this whole ridiculous act of criminalizing adults who choose to love in whatever way they want. Africa is just copying them
    Truly sad.
What grown people do in their bedrooms and in their personal time is nobody’s business…especially not the government…especially not a useless government that has nothing to show for itself but bribery, corruption, theft and murder.

I agree with the Ugandan law and any other law condemning homosexuality. We have to have morals and standards as Africans. We cant accept things just because the West has done so. If the West were anti-homosexuality I am 100% certain that all the ppl making stupid comments condemning the law will be supporting it. Homosexuality is wrong! It is unnatural. If you want to be gay, why do you want to adopt children and procreate!

But you all have accepted adultery and fornication na. I am still waiting for one of you self righteous Christians to explain why a man can cheat on his wife and destroy his home, but two consenting adults can not love each other in peace. How many victims does the adulterer have?

      February 25, 2014 at 9:18 pm

NOBODY has accepted adultery and fornication. it takes place, but how many people do you know that say “my significant other cheated on me and i’m completely fine with it” – that is acceptance. everyone sins, but at least they KNOW that they are sining. so if they want to take steps to change their ways they can. the problem comes when you sin and you now start trying to convince yourselves and others that what you’re doing is not wrong. and as far as I realise, adultery and fornication is still seen as wrong (even though people still do it).

I def do not subscribe to the jail term issued, but, I do feel it needs to be treated like an illness, addiction or psychological problem et al. Masturbation, Fornication, Adultery, same sex marriage are all interwoven.

my thoughts on all this, John 8:7.
we’re all here talking about morals and religion. Jesus said he loved the sinners but hated the sin. It’s all right when we lie, fornicate, commit adultery, cheat pple, be mean to our neighbours, and no its ur personal business with God, it doesnt concern the government. But now we talk bout homosexuality and this innocent pple have to spend 14 years of a live that could av been otherwise productive or corrective in jail. I in no way support homosexuality and would definately do whatever i av to do to send the spirit away from any of my friends or family who decide they want to inhabit the spirit, but i also do not support this law. And i cant even start on all this government wars, western bullying…….. Smh. God bless Nigeria

it might interest you to know that Anal sex and all carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man or woman is purnishable under the law. All these gay activist sef! it’s not as if we just woke up this year to criminalise gay relations. Sodomy ‘gay sex’ has been purnishable under the Nigerian law for a long time. The government just reiterated the commitment to enforce such a law and to finetune it.

This whole gay issue is so wrong! Very soon paedophile will come and too and say being with a 5yrs old child is natural and it cannot be helped cos dey were born wit it! Afterall someone just said what a person does in their bedroom is not anyone’s biz shey? America has left their numerous issues to threaten Presidents Jonathan and Museveni cos of the anti gay law, talk about being jobless! Homosexuality is now a crime in Naija and Uganda and even Arizona, Obama please deal with ur own and leave us alone ooo!

    • iyanu

      February 25, 2014 at 11:52 am

being a paedophile is different. Its non-consensual and as good as rape. According to the law anyone below 18 is not mature enough to take decisions themselves and u’re talking about 5 yr olds….

    • Abena

      February 25, 2014 at 12:03 pm

My dear your argument with pedophiles is wrong because they do this to CHILDREN below the age of consent. I fail to see how two consenting adults engaging in homosexuality in the privacy of their homes or wherever can be criminal. Is it morally wrong? Definitely yes but so is fornication, adultery and perhaps anal sex in heterosexual couples. Is it criminal? Hell no!

    February 25, 2014 at 12:01 pm

If it is not wrong, why are people always hiding it?
Why are they ashamed of it?
Oscar Wilde refers to it as “the love that dares not speak its name”

    • Iris

      February 25, 2014 at 1:53 pm

Maybe because they know they may get killed, prosecuted or at the very least insulted? If you can’t find an intelligent point to support your argument, say nothing please. @Kola I don’t know what you’re talking about. If it was about criminalising gay marriage trust me the uproar would have been a lot less. The law in Uganda and Nigeria criminalises homosexual activity. Where have you been? The one about Uganda is even stated above in this post.

It is wrong oh.Let us call a spade a spade.God created Eve for Adam,he did not create another Adam for Adam. Please lets stop all this nonsense, although am not in support of the kind of punishment meted out to the offenders but i guess its a good deterrent. Very soon two consenting adults would also bring a goat or a dog to join them in the privacy of their homes.

Really people here who are all acting that they are humans you are all fake or gay your selves these people are going to schools in my country recruiting young kids with bribes like money and we all know TIA-This is Africa kids come from very poor families and these people are taking advantage of the situations molesting young boys and gals sexually

    • Abena

      February 25, 2014 at 2:40 pm

Educate me please. Where exactly is this going on? Because where I live, about 95% of all molestation and defilement cases that i hear or read of are heterosexual.

    • Noni

      February 25, 2014 at 6:22 pm

      February 26, 2014 at 2:34 pm

Does that justify being gay.. Please I have heard of a number of guys do it to young boys and in one case, it only became public knowledge when the small boy became infected with HIV here in Port harcourt

  23. Femi

    February 25, 2014 at 6:26 pm

We are not asking for marriage just don’t recognize it period 14 years is extreme and there are loads of gay men in government I’m sure even in Ugandan also women supporting this bill thinking it will ensure they get husbands are ignorant

  24. Femi

    February 25, 2014 at 6:29 pm

But Nigeria men are the most surprising they enjoy lesbianism. And even watch lesbian porn but they just hate gay men and are pushing for punishment ,it should be included. That any man who watches lesbian porn should be jailed equally how do u price when a man is gay or not ,my straight friends don’t know I’m bisexual so if I ever get caught they will get arrested to ladies dhst if that your bestie is gay too u will get a stressed summary -while I’m not asking for marriage the law doesn’t solve anything

this cannot be right -14 years? Sounds like human rights violators to me….

  26. stupidityslayer

    February 25, 2014 at 10:00 pm

Yea, how many victims do adulterers have? Bet you its more than gay men. The spread of HIV in Africa squarely rests on the shoulders of heterosexual men who shag indiscriminately without protection. So how many victims to heterosexual men have compared to gay men?

  27. NNENNE

    February 26, 2014 at 4:19 am

All sorts of lynching of gay people in Nigeria?
Where did Christiane Amanpour get that?

  28. henryOkechukwu

lesbianism & homosexeulism is unnatural. As a christian it is forbidden. Any body with such tendency should pray for God to take away such from his life so that he/she may live a normal life and not to be encouraged to continue in the wasteful life style.
