Spring 2014 Trends to Rock – The Midi Skirt | Awed by Monica

AwedbyMonica Spring Trends the Midi Skirt - BellaNaija - April 2014001Welcome to the second edition of the Spring Must Haves for 2014 by Monica Awe-Etuk of Awed by Monica. For the next 5 weeks we will highlight what I consider some of the most important trends, and how you can make them your own by incorporating them into your everyday lives.

Last week we took a dive into a colour splash highlighting Spring 2014’s colour trends to have {Click here if you missed it}. Today we are tackling one of fashions icons – The Midi Skirt.

Second Edition: The Midi Skirt
This silhouette is definitely here to stay, and with the new season brings new fabrics such as; tulle, lace, jacquard, floral prints etc. The silhouette of the midi skirt gained fame in the 1940s and has remained a must duplicate look for almost 20 years. In the 70s Fairchild Publications – head and chief editor of Women’s Wear Daily, declared the midi as the must have item.

In rebellion of this decree on women during a time of freedom and peace, the style was boycotted. In 2011 the trend resurfaced. Designers highlighted the elegance and sophistication of the skirt, by making it modern and pairing it with total opposites. The midi skirt has reclaimed its place once again as a fashion and style must have, hence why every major retailer now carrys the skirt in one form or the other.

What is considered a Midi Skirt
What makes a skirt a midi is length. It can be flared or fitted it really doesn’t matter; length is truly the determining factor. A midi skirt is one that runs below the knee to mid-calf. It is usually made with a higher waist line and compliments almost all body types and that is why it is such a popular trend.

The fitted version is very sexy and sensual as it highlights the female figure. The fitted version looks amazing on almost every woman, delivering the sexy. The flared version is girly and is usually made in fabric that has more body or layers, like tulle and taffeta. The mermaid silhouette combines fit and flare; this skirt is fitted at the top and flared at the bottom, creating the ultimate juxtaposition of sexy and youthful.

The Fitted Midi Skirt

I love the midi skirt trend, very wearable, stylish and modest. I’ve been quite scared to try it though as I am quite petite and feel it will make me look shorter.

Midi skirts are for tall and slim girls… If you are under 5ft 5″, and wear size 12 and above, stay away from midi skirts… You will just look like a short whale! You have been warned…

@Tosan i dont’s agree, i am 5ft 2 and rock Midi skirts a lot, the trick is to wear them with heels This elongates your legs and gives the illusion of having longs legs.
They actually work fine for me, the trick is that the Midi should not be longer than the appropriate length. Always wear with heels if you have to

May i add that for Short ladies they have to be mostly fitted Midi skirts, never wear them with ballerinas or kitten heels. The looks on Monica, Joan Smalls, and Stylepantry are most appropriate for short ladies. the flared skirts might be a no no,
