Abused Nigerian Woman Awaits Refugee Protection in Canada

Oluyemisi Akinbinu, a 48-year-old Nigerian woman is once again waiting to find out if she will get refugee protection in Canada. A federal court justice heard her case on Tuesday and has reserved her decision.

Akinbinu claims she was beaten and chased out of her home by an abusive husband and mother-in-law for not giving birth to a son.

7 years later…in 2003, Oluyemisi came from Nigeria to work at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre, Manitoba, Canada.

She testified that her husband who is a doctor, married another wife, and forced her out of a medical clinic they established together.

Oluyemisi was pregnant during the ordeal, and was left broke to care for her daughter and the child in her womb – who happened to be a boy.

According to Winnipeg Free Press, when she heard that Selkirk Mental Health Centre was recruiting nurses, she planned to start over in Canada with the hope of a better life for her and her two children.

She failed the nursing exam, and extended her visa working as a caregiver. After the option was exhausted, she applied for refugee status in 2012.

Oluyemisi at her last refugee protection hearing claims that her life is still in danger if she returns to Nigeria. She was denied and is currently awaiting the decision by the federal court justice.

Her children are with her aged parents in Nigeria.
