Sodas & Popcorn Review: 10 Best Movies Of Summer 2014

The summer season in moviedom is best known for delivering the biggest box office hits of the year. Many are no-brainers which just aim to feed the eyes of its audience with the best of Action, comedy, romance and other genres.

And I must say, summer 2014 has had a great run but sadly, it has come to a close (unofficially of course) to open up the highly anticipated movies released during the fall season (which is the award season). Over the last 6 months, a lot of movies have made us laugh. Some gave us adrenaline inducing-action and very few made us cry. But out of the cluster of good movies that were released this year, we will be taking time out to talk about the 10 Best Movies Of Summer 2014.

There is really no criteria. They’re just movies that I love best from the season.So I expect to be crucified in the comments section below. *Getting scared already*

So in an order of the least to the best, here are 10 Best Movies Of Summer 2014.

10. Half Of A Yellow Sun

At Number 10, we have Nollywood’s most expensive movie ever made, Half Of A Yellow Sun. While many of the book fans and Chimamanda Disciples who have seen the movie weren’t the biggest fans of the movie (are book fans ever big fans of their favorite adaptations?) including our own Terver (Read her Review here). We all have to admit the fact that this was an outstanding production with lovely performances from Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton, Anika Noni Rose and most of all, our very own Onyeka Onwenu. More than any Nollywood movie in recent times, Half Of A Yellow sun has given us a glimpse into our history an idea what a Nightmare the Biafran war was. This is especially so for those of us who were lucky enough to haven’t been around then anyways.

9. 22 Jump Street

Coming in at number 9 is 22 Jump Street. This is one of the funniest movies I saw this year and it is definitely on my list of the best bro-cop-action-comedies. That’s easy anyway, since there aren’t many good ones around. The odd combination of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum who we never thought would make a great team up bought along even more fun in the sequel than they did in 21 Jump Street. Seeing they intend going on till 60 Jump Street, lets hope they don’t run out of fuel soon.

8. Hercules.

Not that Hercules! Oh, yes, the main Hercules. “Whew!”

We got our fair share of Herculean movies this year. One which was a flop on an Herculean scale, and the second which finds itself here. The Brett Ratner directed Hercules staring Dwayne Johnson brought an unexpected approach of a PG rated action comedy with not a single splash of blood while we were all expecting something else. Errr maybe a 300ish approach? Hercules totally rocked and had many memorable memonts after the credits start rolling. I still want my 300ish Hercules though. *folds arms*

7. How To Train Your 2

From the impressive first teaser of How To Train Your 2, we were (fans of the franchise of-course) expecting and praying the movie wont be a flop. And gladly, it did live up to the memory of the prequel. As a matter of fact, I am not sure I will tip any over the other (I haven’t given that any serious thought anyways). 4 years after their debut on screen, Hiccup and his Night fury dragon pet, Toothless return for an awesome adventures that kept both old and young glued to the screen for 100 minutes. I am definitely looking forward to the third in the Dragon training tutorials. Who knows, I might have one someday.

6. Dawn of The Planets of Apes

The secret (which isn’t much of a secret anyways, someone probably already mentioned this in some Newyork best seller) to enjoying a movie you hope wont ruin the memories of an already made prequel (Rise Of The Planet Of Apes) which you cherish very dearly is actually staying away from every promotional material and expecting the very least from the upcoming movie. This worked for Dawn of The Planets of Apes…so much! I went into the movie skeptical and came out marveled at the amazing effect and realism the movie delivered. The movie for me was beyond a summer flick. From Koba’s performance worthy of the “Villain of the year” award to Ceaser living up to the legendary status the name holds, I loved every bit of the movie.

5. Fault In Our Stars

Sigh. Who didn’t cry after watching this movie? If you didn’t, you are one harsh soul. A friend gave the description of the movie in a few words and that’s all I have to say about it.

4. Godzilla

The long return of the King of the big screen was totally worth my several times of viewing the movie. Yes thats right. I saw it in theater not one, or twice, but thrice! Like my legendary secret I shared up there, it totally worked again for Godzilla, and I was totally blown away. This is probably my best disaster movie till date.

3. XMEN: Days Of Future Past

And then, even I break my rules. I followed up this movie every step of the way. Why you may ask? Bryan Singer. That’s the answer. It was high time for an Xmen reboot. I mean, so many plot holes in the different movies, you’d think they weren’t set in the same Xmen universe. And with acclaimed super hero movies director Director Bryan Singer sitting in the tall uncomfortable chair (so I heard), we got nothing but the best Xmen movie yet. I had great amount of fun watching this movie a couple of times.

2. Edge Of Tomorrow

We are all tired of Tom Cruise doing the same kind of movies again and again. When the trailer for this came out, I had to be like, again? Isnt he tired already? Don’t get me wrong, the trailer looked awesome like they always do. But it looked like something we had seen Cruise do before, like a billion times. But folks, if you haven’t seen Edge of Tomorrrow, you should. The movie totally rocks. Awesome plot, awesome story, awesome twists, awesome action, awesome progression and continuity and most of all, awesome closure. Just go see it.

1. Guardians Of The Galaxy

Wait, what’s that? You want me to explain why Guardians Of The Galaxy is number one? *Hiss* You are not serious. You better go and see that movie like right now. But first, go check out our review of the movie. Daz All.
