2015: Oba of Lagos Pledges Support for INEC

Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos on Monday said that traditional rulers in the state would support the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) toward achieving successful conduct of the 2015 general elections.

Akiolu spoke in his Palace when the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Lagos State, Adekunle Ogunmola, paid a courtesy call on him and other traditional rulers in the state.

The traditional leader commended the INEC leadership for recognising the important role of traditional rulers for effective sensitisation of the people on election matters.

“I pledge the support of the Lagos State traditional institutions in ensuring that INEC’s programmes in the state are hitch free and successful,’’ he said.

The Oba tasked residents of the state to ensure that they participate fully in the INEC’s distribution of Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVC) billed to begin on November 7th.

“I urge churches, mosques, educational institutions and the private sector to assist in the sensitization of the people on the need to obtain their voters’ cards for the 2015 elections.

Earlier in his speech, Ogunmola said that no one would be allowed to vote in the polls without the Permanent Voter’s Card.

“We are here to intimate the monarch on the INEC distribution of cards from November 7th to November 9th, in 8,465 polling units across the state,’’ he said.

Ogunmola said that the commission got the traditional rulers involved because of their closeness to the people.

He said that the commission had also undertaken other means to enlighten the residents of Lagos on the need to be fully involved and participate in the processes leading to 2015 elections.
