Flowers are becoming the focal point of many couples’ reception decor, not just an addition. Flowers have a way of rendering the decor lush and romantic.

2. The Cape Trend
In late 2014, Solange ‘broke the internet’ in her unconventional white outfits at her New Orleans wedding. Two of the outfits incorporated capes, which we predict will be an even bigger trend this year.

In 2014, we saw the rise of unconventional bridal parties. Women stood by the groom’s side … shall we call them ‘grooms-women’?

Traditional weddings are the best opportunity to play with colour! Many brides are however, opting to wear their favourite colour for different elements of their outfit – from headwrap to wrapper. The hottest colours are shades of blue and green – aqua, teal etc.

9. Custom Wedding Dresses
If you want more bling, more beading, more everything, why not get your dress custom made?

Nowadays Nigerian brides regardless of their religion desire the ‘princess look’ for their wedding day, and that often comes with a custom white wedding dress!

We see this trend rising in 2015, in Christian and Muslim weddings alike, as brides are making their own rules for their special day.

Average people…please take note you have to have a certain amount of wealth to pull this trend off…before people who cant afford it start robbing banks…..cut your coat according to your size and pocket.

    • Nahum

      January 26, 2015 at 2:13 pm

Please help me tell these children o. Ladies and gents, please check your bank accounts very well before you start following trends. Biko if you know you can not keep up with the trend, abeg create your own trend biko. Dont go and sell your unborn children because of one day and Bella Naija pictures. Those of us “oooo”ing and “ahhhh”ing on BN will not give you money when the chips are down o. Dont kill yourself to please us abeg.

      January 26, 2015 at 2:24 pm

LOL we love our BN fam and your comments.
That said, trends can be interpreted in various ways. It gives us great joy to see trends in our BN wedding posts reinterpreted in various ways. You do not need a huge budget. You just need to get creative!

For example, you do not need millions to rock so many of the trends. Any great tailor can recreate a cape trad outfit for you. Same goes for the Monochrome trad trend or even the custom wedding dress trend. Go to the market, buy your fabric and sew it. There was a bride we featured on instagram and the photo got thousands of likes. Her dress was stunning! It was made by an “unknown/upcoming” Nigerian designer right here in Lagos and it def did not cost an arm and a leg. Even a themed wedding or unique bridal shower, you can create these according to your budget. You just need creativity and time.

So dear future brides, you can have a fab wedding at any budget. Enjoy 🙂

BN, you dont feature “creative weddings”! you feature expensive weddings with all the hired wedding planners and photographers! and oh yes! you will need to bend over backwards if you r not very rich to achieve the wedding you guys flaunt. You have every right to post them and let people ooh and ahh but please dont come with all the justified talk of interpreting trends.

      Hello Su,

We do post creative weddings and also, as you mentioned, expensive weddings! However, the weddings we post are to inspire and not to dictate how weddings should be. We’re always eager for You, or any BN reader with the next creative idea to make your day yours and blow people away.

      Here are a few:
      1. Peacock Wedding –

The couple saved money by having all 3 ceremonies in the same hall on the same day, and infused the peacock theme in creative ways all day.

      2. Beach Wedding –

The couple scouted the venue themselves, the family did the decor, groom made the cake, traded some items for barter (e.g. pre wedding photography) etc.

      3. Vintage Wedding –

Yewande scouted a lot of the items – decor and souvenirs – herself on

    • Mz Socially Awkward...

      January 26, 2015 at 5:09 pm

Hahaha!!! Very good advice so that nobody “tensions” themselves unecessarily. 🙂

On another note, I have to say that Nigerian events planners are setting the bar at new levels. Every venue I’ve seen looks fantastic … but, again, na money make beta soup to dey sweet. 🙂

Trend #11: Multimillionaire Couples. If your father doesn’t have an oil company, a bank or isn’t a senator or governor, please respect yourself and find your way to the Ikoyi registry. Bella, you’re welcome

So such time spent planning “the wedding”; so little time spent planning the marriage. Little wonder why so many are crumbling within a short time.

  5. Debby

    January 26, 2015 at 2:47 pm

All BNW is saying is, see the trends and take a cue, they are not asking you to break banks for your wedding. After all we steal styles from the BN as-ebi to sew by our “suraju the tailor”.
You can copy and paste any of the trends with little budget if you are sincere with yourself and not trying to impress anybody. Shikena…

    • corolla

      January 27, 2015 at 2:32 pm

O.C’s wedding that was above average was yapped on this site, so I don’t think average people will be submitting their pictures to be insulted by a bunch of basic females.

  7. Meh

    January 26, 2015 at 3:32 pm

On the serious…. what Bella said is the truth. Caught my boyfriend tensioning himself looking at bella naija pics and had to talk him off the ledge of ‘how the hell is anybody supposed to afford this’. I was of course… flattered, but it really is a case of there are ideas that are easy to copy without killing yourself… e.g. yewande’s bridesmaids dresses were sewn by a normal tailor… she bought her own veil at a non-designer price… and they all looked so nice!

  8. lola

    January 26, 2015 at 4:19 pm

but bellanaija you promote expensive weddings

  9. Miss Pynk

    January 26, 2015 at 5:07 pm

Oh wedding trends. My body was itching just looking at the flower walls. thank God i have allergies, used fake flowers all the way.

Bella you guys left out a trend- custom souvenirs – not buckets or even ipads. I had custom cigars for friends of the groom, and mints for the ladies at the trad. The cigars were a hit along with the mini alcohol bottles, my father friends were asking if they werent young enough for the cigars.lmao.

for intending couples please do not tension yourself on top of wedding. It only lasts 2 or 3 days. Just make sure you have fun. If you spend your money trying to fulfil unecessary rites, you will feel it later oh….

At the end of the day, you two will face yourseves behind closed doors and life will happen.

Also pay for your honeymoon before you pay for wedding…it helps.

    • Jo!

      January 26, 2015 at 7:08 pm

Gbam!!! at “pay for honeymoon first”

    January 26, 2015 at 6:22 pm

Surely this was not meant for the average Nigerian BN.

  11. NaijaPikin

    January 26, 2015 at 7:28 pm

    I’ll add another.
    – Small and intimate weddings which ties in ith destination weddings (the easiest way to achieve crowd control).

Seen/heard of a couple of 200pple weddings in naija. Thats truly impreasive considering the stand 1000.

As u are forming ‘trending’, remember, marriage ain’t all glitz and glamour. Get all creative for the day if you want but know that more of that creative energy is needed in keeping the home. Bella Naija won’t remind you o. They’ll be first to link people to your story when it crumbles.

    January 27, 2015 at 8:06 am

Well,BNW has said it all. This post has said it all.The essence of it all is just for you to take a cue and be inspired. Monochrome style cannot cost an arm and a leg. Likewise having the groom wearing a suit other than black. These are basic trends that are welcome in 2015. If your bank account is average you do not have any business setting up a channel -themed bridal shower..that one is not even your business loool. And for the flowers you do not have to do an entire wall! Just filling up spaces here and there with flowers and you’re good,Its Bellanaija- Be inspired 🙂

  16. Someone Naughty

O ma wa ga bayii o! the way we overdo things in this part of the world. hall rental alone is 2years house rent, the money for decor nko, you will comfortably furnish your house with it. these things are beautiful but freaking scary! even the young men are scared to propose cos they keep seeing how expensive, overrated and unnecessary some of these things are! I think we just put ourselves through undue pressure jare… abeg if you can’t afford this luxury, cut your coat according to the material. God help us all

  20. Somiii

    January 28, 2015 at 12:42 am

All these comments tho, anyway, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
I agree with lady lala, BellaNaija’s Tagline is “Be Inspired”, and is clearly written on the home page and when you are trying to log in. so remember that before you start to harass the BN wedding team. Even when listening to the word in church, you are advised to sieve through any sermon you hear and take what speaks to you. you cant swallow everything hook line and sinker.
Be inspired by the trends you like and can afford, don’t run yourself into debt tomorrow and say its BNW that showed you 2015 trends.
As for featuring expensive weddings, I believe what BN does is feature quality weddings, no matter the cost, na inferiority complex dey make people nor dey submit their wedding to BNW because they think that if they haven’t used “fresh flowers and done red carpet at their bridal shower, BNW will not feature them. Send quality photos and you will be featured on BNW shikena!
