Linda Ikeji Empowers Aspiring Female Entrepreneurs with ‘I’d Rather be Self Made’ N10 Million Grant Project

Noted blogger, Linda Ikeji, has launched an initiative called ‘I’d Rather be Self Made” to empower aspiring female entrepreneurs.

As part of the program, she will be giving N10 million to the selected women to assist them in starting their respective businesses. She has selected 15 beneficiaries.

Here is what Ikeji says about the program, as reported on her blog:

I am so excited and I can’t wait to help more young ladies start their own businesses. So earlier this year, I announced that I was going to set aside a N10million grant to help young ladies with dreams, ambition and great business ideas to start their own small scale businesses. And finally, I’ve done it. I’ve spent over N5million on 15 girls…and I have another N5million to give away before the end of the year. You have a great business idea and need start up capital? I’m here to help! .:-)

So here’s how it happened. I met with over 800 ladies in January this year, I got a panel to look at their proposals, we asked about 50 of them to present their ideas to us and then we shortlisted to 15 girls who are the first beneficiaries of the ‘Linda Ikeji I’d Rather Be Selfmade’ project. Here are 11 out of the 15 beneficiaries. Four girls who live outside Lagos (Jos, Umuahia, Ibadan and Warri) couldn’t make it to our meeting this past Sunday August 23rd.

We wish all the beneficiaries great success!

Move over darling. This is a time to commend the GOOD job being done by a fellow girl (i am a female) and not time for unrelated criticism. Well done Linda, and kudos for allowing God use you to bless the ones who need help and inspiration. I look forward to being such an example.

Gbam! “People at the top dont have time for quarrels, its d followers that die hating each other.”
Politicians be dining and wining in each other’s houses; their children go to the same schools and are friends while their supporters who are usually poor break beer bottles over each other’s heads.
This is a nice initiative from Linda. Kudos to her.

Very mean set of people. The story isnt culled, go and sit somewhere
People at the top dont have time for quarrels, its d followers that die hating each other

BN posted it to admire the work of a lady helping other ladies (irrespective of who it is)

A girl like you is affecting the lives of others, you are here hating on another person
      die in your hatred jasmine

They both take stories from each other’s blog and they both give credit. Some of you like wahala. I’m not a fan of LIB, (neither am I a fan of BN even though I visit both blogs), but don’t try and create chaos. They both do same, and they both give credit.

That’s why Bella Naija and Linda Ikeji are leading blogs. They don’t have time for the kind of petty behavior you’re suggesting. It’s amazing how news like this can still inspire negative comments.

    God bless you
Wish we all can follow suit

Imagine all the house of rep members establishing an industry in their constituency
Imagine each senator establishing a production outlet in their constituency

Imagine how many unemployed youths would be employed. The money is yours, the profit will come to you but just establish these industries. Many will get jobs, your assets will increase and you wont be forgotten. No they wont. They will prefer to take it to SA or US/UK to by mansions

We still import virtually evrything. News of tomato paste importation, tooth pick rice, infact everything is imported in Nigeria. Do smth good and change the lives of individuals/ctizens

    Bless you Linda

I keep saying the samething. If more of us cared, the country won’t be such a mess. If each person did this for another, just imagine the change that will take place overnight.
I’ve never been a Linda fan, but this deed, the Lord will bless her for, for she is a shining star; and applause to BellNaija for posting this. That’s maturity and support and that’s what we women need to be doing; supporting one another and allowing eachother shine

*sit. How much is their salary. @Californiabawler. If I tell you that I know what the few of them that work for BN earn, you will laugh your head off and not believe it. So called “classy BN”. @Tari, You don’t know me, you don’t know what I give or don’t give. It is a way of showing appreciation to your readers, after all they are using either their own money to visit your blog. It also enhances a sense of belonging from your readers, like they feel they are important to you. Smaller blogs even give out stuff, not because your readers are hungry, jobless people waiting for handouts, but a sense of appreciation and connecting to them. Don’t only give out what sponsors give out. Ever wonder why Linda is AT THE TOP, ever wonder why big major adverts go on her blog FIRST before they go on Bella Naija, some big adverts don’t even come to Bella Naija at all. Ever wonder why on the SAME topic, SDK and/or Linda will get double, triple or even quadruple comments? It is because they are more engaging and appreciative to their readers. It doesn’t even have to be money, it could be a ticket to attend one of the events that BN covers, it could be an all expense paid mini lunch for readers to meet and interact with each other and some of the team at BN, get feedback directly from your readers. Compare the commenting pattern of this year alone to last year and you will notice an appreciable drop. If people are coming to your site and not commenting, it means you are not retaining them for long. When people comment, most times they come back to check comments, increasing blog stats. Let me not talk too much, they know what to do. Get to know your readers and appreciate them, and they will be loyal for life. Think they don’t matter and you can stay “classy” for long, it is your funeral.. The so called “classy” commenters and writers of old, where are they now. You don’t see them commenting as much or writing as much. Entire posts 0 comments, for days on end. Disagree with Linda and her business ethics, but that girl doesn’t just have a big heart, she knows what’s up.

@ Miriam, I’m sure they organise such events, lunch etc for their feature writers. It will soon be time for viewers

      August 27, 2015 at 7:43 pm

@Miriam, are you still on this talk?
I actually thought you were kidding.
You actually want BN to give you hand out as a form of appreciating you?
This your begging dikwa somehow o!
I no follow for that kind appreciation.

    • Leah

      August 27, 2015 at 7:49 pm

I like to add to @ Mirian’s comment by saying it is not such about gifts and “handouts” it is more of pattern. I visit all three sites, BN, LIB and STD, but I only comment on BN because of the web setup. In my humble opinion, the other two are more witty than BN. BN is the last to report every news and it takes them two days to publish comments yet they are suppose to have “staff”. It seems like they only work a few hours a day and the rest of the day nothing happens.

Also, the comment section is very biased depending on who the post is about. I have read homophobic ‘f’ word slurs on this site, the ‘f’ word, the ‘s’ word, people have threatened others. People use the most offensive words and it is fine as long as it is directed at the right person. However, you can not respectfully criticize or point out a flaw in relations to someone BN loves. If you are going censure comments, know why, have your guidelines and stick to them. I find the comments most times more articulate, funny, sound than the posts themselves, and interactions among readers often drive websites. They are how ever doing much better now than they used to, but the activities here are extremely slow after all these years.

And please let stop with the “classy” nonsense, that charade of a ship sailed long time ago. The report as much gossip as the others, they are just to slow to get to them first.

    • Tari

      August 27, 2015 at 9:02 pm

@Miriam, if giving hand outs is all that is needed to foster a sense of belonging then you will end of with a gathering of needy fellows who see the space created as an NGO.

      August 27, 2015 at 6:01 pm

@miriam sit there and be sipping tea your mates are working hard and being recognised for their hard work or will be in the future, you are sitting crossed leg waiting for BN to give you handouts so you can buy Brazilian hair and take pictures for IG!

I come here for the intelligent articles and great quality BN has to offer along with some smart comments from other professional readers like myself. I don’t expect vanguard newspaper or guardian to give me freebies for buying their papers and neither should you BN to encourage your “chop no work” mentality.

    • Constructive Feedback

      August 27, 2015 at 8:22 pm

I guess you missed the part where she wrote it doesn’t have to be money. BN readers will appreciate something else apart from money just like the LI crowd will appreciate money. I quite agree with her second comment above because international Newspapers, populat blogs, news sites and the rest give something back to their readers and viewers and it is mostly never with money. I attended one of such where i got to spend a day in their office. Best experience ever. These media organisations run contests regularly. The person that mentioned Ebony Mag used a terrible example because they appreciate their readers a lot. CNN started Ireporter and do you know what it did for their coverage? That’s a way to appreciate and connect with your viewers. See them as important and valuable to your business. BN doesn’t do anything for their readers, if it is not a freebie they were given to dash out. They have been in the business for this long not to know this already and what Miriam said about loyalty is spot on. The one that said organise something for their featured writers . LMAO. They organise shishi. And their featured writers apart from Desola and one other who actually work for BN. The rest aren’t paid a dime. BN can come out and dispute my claim. Their writers will chop disrespect on top and they treat them like they are doing you a favour as if you should be happy you are writing for them because the queue is long. No be dem say. Word on the street confirmed by writers themselves. Some had the brain to stop writing for them. Whether person fit put it for CV or win literary award I don’t know. BN if you like don’t take constructive feedback and let other people be telling you it is about the money. Get creative, appreciate your readers

I agree with Miriam. Nothing infuriates me like this BELLA NAIJA. Most biased people ever, Always forming ‘classy’ and would only want to relate with the elites. Yes! that’s how you guys come across. If one criticizes one of your own, you won’t post, hence my rant on the ‘pretending to be busy’ post. I don’t care if you guys don’t give back but please stop forming two goody shoes/classy. It’s annoying!!!!! and always post criticisms. All it takes is for someone to come up with a similar site like yours and people will stop visiting your site. Annoying bunch of hypocrites! once again, delight yourselves in using my comment to make yourselves tea… at least you read 😀

    • The real D

      August 27, 2015 at 11:32 pm

I contemplated contributing to this I guess if anyone is reading this I decided to write my thoughts on this. First let me say, I DO NOT know either Linda or Uche so this is just my take and this is about to be long so if you ain’t got time just move on…..

First Miriam you need to note that Linda Ikeji is the one giving out 10M NOT Linda Ikeji’s blog, that is where your comparison started having loop holes and probably it’s major loop hole. Unlike Linda, Uche Pedro of BN did not name her blog after herself so I can see where your error came from. Now does Uche give in her own way I sure hope so but like I said I do not know her either personally or even professionally but I am sure if she does it will most likely be independent of her blog, which is what Linda here did.

For those saying BN needs to stop with what you have termed “classy”. BN caters to a certain audience and so does Linda’s blog. You will not go to Kumyi of deeper life looking for teachings on how to be a role model or good leader than you will go to Adeyemi of Daystar looking for teaching on sanctification and holiness (now I used this 2 to illustrate my point because they have little or no controversy surrounding them in Nigeria). Why would we want two blogs that are exactly the same? One will definitely become redundant and fade away with time.

For those asking that Stella of SDK who by the way I am hearing about for the first time today to be featured on BN for God knows what. Again Linda is the one being celebrated NOT her blog once Stella does something worth celebrating I hope BN celebrates her not just because she has a blog.

On a final note, way to go Linda, empowering women is something I believe in and I am certain Uche and the entire BN community believes in hence the article, I can see why Linda also had to go public with this, first to get the needed ladies attention and secondly so it is known that she followed through after the initial declaration because we human beings know ourselves we for run our mouth tire if she did not. Way to go BN for celebrating another woman, competition or not.

Miriam, it is obvious you want BN to do something independent of its vendors and contributors for its audience while it is a suggestion, understand that just like people come into your life and offer advice and suggestions, some you take and some you don’t, some you are not able to due to circumstances your advisor(s) may not be aware of but, you don’t think that should make the advisor angry or even bitter or worse compare you to someone else, if you’d not want that in your own life why push it on the entire BN community.

      August 30, 2015 at 3:24 pm

Linda gives out 20k to 5 readers every last Monday of every month for about 1.5 years now if not more. She gives random commenters based on the number their comments come in. So yes, she appreciates her readers.
And December last year she gave out N1m to about 25 random readers.

      August 28, 2015 at 2:49 am

Miriam please stop! JUST STOP! If you don’t like BN and their style, walk away honey, move right along. And please stop spewing rubbish and untruths. The major reason why Linda and her compadre SDK get plentiful comments is the type of news they report, the way they report it and the fact that they do not moderate comments over there. People can spill their vile, contemptuous guts via their keyboards and those girls will post it. And everybody and their mama know that the minute you are willing to sink that low, you will attract MANY just like you because we all know flies cling to poo like white on rice. Linda and SDK are just unethical; I can’t stand it! I am sorry, anyone who is willing to post any rubbish to make a quick buck is someone I do not want my daughter or anyone I know emulating. You profit off of people’s pain and sorrow and somehow should be praised; y’all go somewhere with that BS. Miss me jare with that rubbish, miss me well well. It doesn’t matter how many giveaways and bonanza she wan do for awon agbaya like you, it will never take away from the fact that she is a glorified rumor peddler. And if you need freebies so much, please go there and apply now, why are you here disturbing us good folks?

So fine, them two (Linda and SDK) are well within their rights to conduct their business anyhow they please, but let no one try to make it out to be what it ain’t. BN, please don’t mind folks like Miriam with their hand out all the time looking for who to collect from, abeg y’all keep doing what you are doing, the way you are doing it, we classy folk appreciate ya. Thank you!

Thanks for this Bella, it speaks well of you and your team to have reported this.
Linda gets so much flack for being the gossip blogger that she is, and not enough recognition for the good that she tries to do. e.g. Initiatives such as this, raising awareness for ALUU4 and some other causes, Her giveaways and etc. She comes across as someone who is really generous, and likes to give back. She also comes off as someone who when you drill down to it, is a nice and playful gal with a good heart but most people don’t see that because of her line of work. I am definitely a fan of her and her blog although I realize she is not everybody’s cup of tea.
That said, I love BellaNaija and I love Linda Ikeji for separate reasons. Keep on shining ladies.

And she uses her blog for social good. Linda reports stories about a bad road and within a week the state government. Is repairing it. She reports about dustbin dumps and within a few days it’s cleared up. She has been fighting for the traffic robbery in Lagos; everyday she posts about it a begs the Lagos state gov. to do something. She reports about corpses on the roads, basically begging the government to do their jobs. She helps missing people find their families. Her blog does more good. Both blogs carry gossip, yet Linda uses hers to the betterment of the public but some people would still rather bash her. Ban should learn, life isn’t all about parties. There’s too much ill in Nigeria not to use this platform the advocate for change.

Very Happy for Linda, her success and so on and very happy that she shares, she seems to have a free hand.. giving 10000 here, 20000 there, building a house for her dad, helping family. GOD BLESS YOU LINDA.. Linda is all about empowering women and the helpless and just doing good VERSUS Bella Naija that seems to just be in it for the money, heck we don’t even get to interact with the owner… To each his own!

BELLA NAIJA, when would you begin to share?? We do not hear of any of your charity works.

TONY – pls sit your raggedy ass down! You sound like a frustrated fool based on your post. Keep it positive and keep it moving. It’s wonderful that Linda is doing it but It’s not by force to do charity work or give away your hard earned money to anyone, to each his own… Ode ?

    • Samantha

      August 28, 2015 at 4:50 pm

Tony, you do know what the Bible says about giving right? If you don’t, let me educate you. It says, when you give, let the other hand not even “see” (paraphrasing). Just because you do not hear or see something, does not mean it does not exist. Have you seen God? No. But you believe (or I hope you do) He exists. Can you see “Air”? But you are breathing and reading this right?

Please, rather than saying you have not seen someone else’s charity work, why not FOCUS on YOUR charity work. WE are ALL (no matter how little you have….once again, remember the widow in the Bible who gave all she had) reminded to do good in our own little way. In your mind, you think because BN has more than you, she should give. Mind your business and start with yourself.

In this life of “everyone just wants to take and not give”, that is why something like this would be the first thing that would come out of your mouth. You have a sense of entitlement. The truth is, from your post (as well as Miriam), it is not like you are genuinely concerned that BN is not giving others….there is still a very selfish undertone in your comment.

As much as I agree that businesses must support their customers, like The Real D said, the support may be in a way that you do not understand.

As for you Miriam, we can give in so many ways. I know (unfortunately, I have not been one) of how many businesses have grown just because BN has featured or mentioned them on instagram or on this site.. Aso ebi bella has made so many people relevant (and I am sure has boosted their self esteem) and so on and so forth. Open your eyes and see giving comes in many different styles. Do not be selfish to think that once it is not coming from a certain way you THINK it should, then the person should not give.

Linda has done well but I KNOW she also does most of these things for “earthly glory”. To manipulate her readers and to keep her on a pedestal. She does not come across to me as humble or doing these things, just because there is that very deep desire to give back. However, no matter what the motive is, I COMMEND HER because it is NOT easy to part away with hard earned money…..and she sure works hard for her money!

One last thing, LIVE AND LET LIVE!

Please no corporate company runs their affairs by holy books. It’s not bad if a company publicizes their charity deeds, it’s called Corporate Social Responsibility. And you’re wrong if you think BN is too posh to publish CSR events. Heck, they made a post about Uche/BN’s orphanage charity (the cinema event with Christmas gifts). It’s not just about doing when you’re a brand, it’s also about perception. In Accounting Ethics, it’s called Independence of mind and Independence of Appearance.

The first time I ever saw a picture of Uche Pedro was on Linda’s blog. Her wedding Linda reported it. Uche’s different awards Linda has reported them. Her birthday parties and the birth of her children, Linda has always had the sweetest and kindest things to say about Uche. And while people come here to bash her everyday, such thing never happens on her blog. This is first time BN is giving her any kind of credit and I applaud you for that.

@ Just Me, your line “Your fame and wealth is from other people’s pain” is the truth. Linda herself won’t argue. Ignore the snobs who miss your point and focus instead on how you expressed it as if they are perfect. No one is. Linda is a complex person with different sides. The same nasty gossip can also be a generous giver. If the ladies she has given to mess up tomorrow, she will blast them on her blog. It is what it is.

.I am not a fan of Linda nor any of these useless nigerian copy cut and paste from American blogs nigerian bloggers.. #LazyBloggers is what i call them. You all know who you are.

Anyway my comment is for “Just Me” , I dont have an ounce of respect for people who write such bad grammar and spelling as you do.

Please you shouid never comment on blogs. or any website. Its 2015 and you are still writing with such bad spelling. I know it was teen trend (which started with twitter limitation of 140 characters) but i was hoping by now it had fazed out and you guys were back to reality.

Tontoh Dikeh use to irk me when she wrote like that and i think she still does (Tontoh learn from Uru Eke okay, have a little class when you write, and act like you at LEAST got secondary education let alone college/university) .

A guy was asking me out and inbox me one day, I could not read past the first line , I just blocked him quick. My future kids father can not write like a RETARD, yes that is what i call it “RETARD WRITING AND SPELLING.

IF YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO WRITE LIKE THAT (like Just Me), please stop it , it is a disgrace to your being. You have an excuse to do it on Twitter (due to 140 character limitation) but not anywhere else.

I plan on relocating home to run a business and i aim to give the youth jobs at my company, but the one thing i plan on doing is testing each and every one on their English grammar and spelling. If you write so foolishly, i will NEVER consider you for employment.

Its clear you can see the attitude of Nigerians. BN reported on a good deed done and all everyone can think of is how big they are because they reported from a so called competitor in news media. Oyinbo will never even see this as an issue.like BBC reporting something CNN did.I pray for Nigerians and the spirit of i better pass my neighbor attitude. At least the country can move forward when we realize that the earth. is big enough for everyone

I applaud what Ms. Ikeji is doing and I wish more people in our society who have the means can help others.

I also wish Linda had also included young men in the people who are receiving cash grants. She says she is trying to give girls a leg up, who would ordinarily sleep with men for money.

It brings up a very important issue. Do women who sleep with men for money do so because they have exhausted every option or because it is an easier route to obtaining what they want. I liking it to armed robber who says he does it because there was no other option for him. I believe that a girl that sleeps with men for material gain and an armed robber are one of the same. These are people who have chosen easier routes to acquiring material. They do not want to take the rigorous steps to attaining material gains.

With that said, the young men in our society are facing the same harsh economic environment as the women. Why then only help the women and not the men?

We should stop making women as the victim when both genders are struggling to get ahead. If someone like say Tony Elumelu had come out and said he was only going to help finance men only businesses, there would be an uproar.

Will it really reduce runs? It’s just the girls that want to do legit that will like to go for this oppurtunity.some girls do not just want to suffer, they just want quick money.i was once laughed at in uni for doing an ushering job for Nigerian breweries, a particular girl said she rather sleep with men than do the job I did at that time, she didn’t no my friend was around her and heard what she said.I felt bad for what she said but I never thought she was better than me because I will never do runs.i am out of school now, found a job that’s paying me 40,000 for now, even though I hope to get a better one in the future,i am grateful to God for all I have.God bless Linda ikeji, she sure has a good heart.

Role Model??….pleeze!!…with all the filth on her blog and sexual gratification….
For me Bella has a better profile..
Bella is like say Ebony Mag…presumably the readership don’t too care too much for handouts…seemingly upwardly mobile of sorts…different demography and market..
My criticism of Bella has been paying lip service to the injustice, social upheaval and corruption permeating the country….life is not just about looking fab..life is bitter sweet but she has picked up compared to previous years…

      Gbam!
The dashing of money is not it. I will rather join BN and contribute to a cause.
It is the hypocrisy and lack of social responsibility that grates me about BN. They pretend to celebrate womanhood but there is no bigger agent for the objectification of female anatomy (at least Linda foes not pretend to be care about anything else but the clicks and she gives the impression of being sex starved since the days of Dan Foster) in the Nigerian blogsphere. BN mistakes classy branding for the live of no pains.
Many of its readers are living real lives and the photocopied life they see permanently portrayed here increases there frustration.
We are not saying that classy lifestyles should not be portrayed but use your platform to pursue change. There are enough challenges facing womanhood in the continent. Pick one and pursue, we your readers will walk with you side by side in that race. There is more to live than all this island party pics, pointless vlogs, endless photoset of out of work actors, sex change discussions and endless launch of alcohol beverages.

BN, chop the comment in your usual manner. Na una way!!

Since you are on the we are empowring and appreciating each other in media, its only right you do it round and not selective, lives areeing changed on stellas blog I tell you if you dont already know, from the tinyest thing to the biggest, homeless people are housed by blog visitors, brides are given free cakes and dress, commenters employ and recommed, school fees are being paid and many more which is done regularly, its touching how people reach out and they are positively answered, its like a lil nice town of helpers

I doubt Linda and SDK do the kind acts they do or foster in order to be appreciated. Let the God who sees that which is done in the secret reward them. The one wey BN no feature, make we no criticize dem for not featuring.

Just cuz BN doesn’t do charity work doesn’t mean Uche Pedro doesn’t. If at all she does, she doesn’t need to blow her trumpet. BN doesn’t need to give it’s readers money. Go work for urs. The moment BN, starts the giveaway stuff people will start posting random, unintelligent comments (like the ones on LIB) here just to partake of it. I read BN because of its content and not monthly give away. Some of y’all are just hungry. Good work, Linda

See them attacking me for my own opinion o. Tari is busy contradicting herself. And this other one is commending her for building a house for her father, seriously? If she doesn’t do it, na me go do am? Nigerians and the way the think. She is trying tho, helping out people instead of showing us receipt of crocodile skin bag worth 10million. Well, it’s her money, she should spend it the way she wants. 42 likes on my comment yet they r attacking me. Hypocrites. And the other said she has never heard of SDK before. Lol. Just like someone lying that he or she av not heard of Ladun or Dabota b4. Mtchewww. BN shouldn’t give out gifts? Lol. Not everybody is after the gift but it’s just a way of appreciating readers and it’s going to pull more traffic. Uche, this is your business. Manage it well. Do giveaway and get more traffic which will inturn give you more money.

Not only bloggers and the rich.
If you can’t give in money, you can give in kind.
Ask yourself what you have given.
    Leave BN alone.
May God bless Linda for her kind gesture. Thanks for posting BN.

By the way sef, how come Linda does not give us information about her family and their deeds? It is always about how her sister is dressed like Beyonce or some other mundane crap. Why not tell us who broke your sister’s heart? Which musician (or person) she f***ed or some other juicy detail, you know the kind she loves to tell about others. You see the problem in life is it’s always easy to do these things when it’s not too close to home. Up until the shoe will be on the other foot, people never really appreciate the damage they do.

Anyway, for those celebrating the “self made” champion, all I say is godspeed. I just hope that if by chance, Linda out any one of una, or publish a sordid tale you no want make people know, sey una go still dey praise and love am oh. No “backsies” allowed!

Bella Naija really needs to pay their contributors. You can pay them based on the views/comments the article gets. BN gets so much revenue from clicks, ads and sponsored posts. The least you can do is reward your writers.
So many people complained about this chopping n cleaning mouth up there. We all say blogging is the new journalism; well pay people for their articles just like print media do.
