Nigerian Woman Let Off £145,000 Bill after Birth of Quints in UK

Bimbola Ayelabola - BellaNaija.com - 01
A Nigerian woman identified as 37-year-old Bimbo Ayelabola has been let off by a National Health Service (NHS) Hospital after delivering quintuplets in Britain.

The UK’s Telegraph reports that Ayelabola underwent a complex caesarean section in 2011, but failed to pay any of the cost of the operation and neo-natal care for her five babies. The bill was £145,000.

According to the publication, Homerton University Hospital in East London will not chase Ayelabola for the outstanding bill.

The medical institution claims that it sent one request for payment, more than six months after she left the hospital, and did not take any further action after when it was returned unpaid.

The mom of five, who is a make-up artist, has since returned to Lagos and claims she never received her bill.

“I have never received my bill. If I had it, I would pay it,” she says.

The news agency states that Ayelabola’s story follows claims by NHS whistleblowers that managers are instructing them to turn a blind eye to health tourists, because it is too much trouble to chase them for money.

Ayelabola is said to have obtained a visitor’s visa after discovering she was pregnant in 2010, and stayed with her younger sister in the UK early in her pregnancy.

She remained in the hospital for almost 2 weeks after the birth of two boys, and three identical girls, in April 2011. And although her visa reportedly expired, she continued living in her sister’s apartment with the children and did not return home until February 2013.

Ayelabola recently spoke to The Mail, saying;

“What is it that’s my fault? I don’t understand.

They blamed me that I came to the UK and I just came to use the system, which I did not do.

If it (health tourism) is a problem in the UK, you should talk to the NHS. I have never received my bill. If I had it, I would pay it.

Telegraphy UK reports that Ayelabola is separated from her wealthy husband, Ohi Nasir Ilavbare, but he is involved in the lives of his children. She is also believed to have been banned from returning to Britain for five years.

A Department of Health spokesman said: “It is completely unacceptable that people living outside the UK think they can abuse our NHS. We expect and are supporting the NHS to make every effort to reclaim money owed to it.”

Wait! You never received your bill if not you would have paid! Why didn’t you request for it foolish woman? You abused their system, accept that!! You know if its in naija, you go pay deposit before them go attend to you. Your deposit isn’t even a guarantee because along the line, they will tell you to pay again if not you’ll be abandoned. You know this lady! You do

She never received the bill but stayed in UK for two years after the children were born. She didn’t receive bills nor enquire after utilizing the neonatal unit and staying for 2 weeks in the hospital.
No need to give excuses, there was no intention of paying the bills.

This is exactly what Mercy Johnson has bee doing for a few years now. Dropping kids every year for US tax payers to foot the bill, while she comes back to Nigeria to brag about Range Rover and “ordinal people”.

NHS don’t usually charge though. My cousin fell down the stairs on her visit from Nigeria, and we took her to the NHS hospital. She didn’t have to pay even when we asked. I don’t know if childbirth is different though.

This is neonatal care not a broken toe! She clearly abused the system and is now claiming ignorance in the most rude fashion! The least she can do is ask for any outstanding bills and apologize for staying in the UK on expired visa!

I read this story some days back and its the same stuffs we’ve been talking about, but only taking a different form. Can you stay in a hotel, eat their food, use their services for a whole a week and carry your bags and confidently walk out of the hotel? …in your mind she’s saying ”shebi manager no give me bill nah, wetin make i do…shebi dem say oyibo people mumu, na my luck abeg”. She has no conscience, very selfish…eventhough you went there for better medical services, didn’t you know you were supposed to pay? which part of the western world is health care services free for immigrants without insurance? or was she also looking for UK passport for the children as well?..claiming she hasnt gotten a bill from anybody, can’t she contact the hospital and wire the money to them? shebi she has the money nah?….abroad abroad abroad and u failed to pay….if it was in Nigeria and she died people like Bruno would rain fire and brimestone on the country, but she gave birth successfully why did she not pay?? how can the average British worker be happy when he’s paying a lot as tax and still has problem accessing the NHIS….God deliver us from this sort of mentality

This is precisely the “living by the dash” mentality which Atoke was speaking of yesterday.

If they’d done the Naija style and left her labouring away in the waiting room until she dropped her deposit, she won’t be claiming ignorance about her bill. And the shameless individual will certainly have returned to her church and been singing, “Everybody looks looku, see what The Lord has done!” at her children’s thanksgiving. With no conscience at all. Abhorrent human being.

I am glad the U.K stopped giving citizenship to babies whose parents are not citizens.

It’s just unfair to abuse the NHS System, did you think is the UK run their health system like Nigeria does, would you be able to run there to use their service.

She knew exactly what she was doing. SILLY WOMAN. Overstaying your visa, and then leaving a large bill for the tax payers of another country to pay. Even in Nigeria is delivery free, that you didn”t ask for the bill.. If you are going to lie, then lie well.

Now you know about the bill GO AND PAY IT.

As much as I encourage Nigerians to have their children abroad in order to give them a chance of a better, easier & stress-free life, I partially disagree with this women’s actions. I understand that her fee is simply incredible 😀 However, she is putting a dent on the chances of other Nigerians coming abroad to give birth.

Anyways, I wish her & her children good health… They are so cute btw (I google searched for their picture). 😀 😀

I must say that having your kids “abroad” doesn’t give them a “better, easier & stress-free life”. That’s the mistake many people help. Most people do it for passports. And I must say, being a Canadian citizen myself, that a passport doesn’t give you financial freedom or success, doesn’t put food on your table, doesn’t give you happiness. Many people put themselves into so much risk and danger just because of passports. It’s pathetic.
At times I see women who are almost about to pop up, on a plane, some shouldn’t even fly when they’re very close to the delivery date; all cause of passports.
Nigerians though. Other Africans are not desperate like.

Question for the Brits: Although her children were born in the UK, will they qualify for British citizenship? & What are the requirements?

Another question: Will a child born in Nigeria (for example) to a British citizen parent (just 1 parent that is British) qualify for British citizenship?

The EU system, in general, is quite confusing…

    Thanks in advance! 🙂

    • Tosan

      September 1, 2015 at 6:19 am

The answer to both questions is No. To qualify for British citizenship, the child needs to have been born in the UK to parents who at least 1 is either British or have permanent residency status. Any other visa and your child will not be British.

    • Mz Socially Awkward...

      September 1, 2015 at 9:28 am

I think the answer to the second question will vary, depending on what qualifies the parent as British. For the oyibo Brits (i.e. British by ancestry because they are the real “shidren” of the soil), if you marry one as a foreigner and on foreign soil (e.g Naija babe or bobo meets and weds one in Naija), your children will still be British and the High Commission in such foreign territory will issue the child with passport after receiving the child’s birth certificate and parent’s particulars. Think of it in the same way as a Naija couple settled in Jand and applying for a Naija passport for their newly born baby.

For the Brits by naturalisation (i.e. those who’ve travelled into the country as foreign nationals and passed all the immigration routes to now call themselves “Bri’ish), if anything carry you waka comot from Mama Charlie land after collecting Pali, you must-to waka return anytime you wan born so that the pikin go also collect immediate pali. Otherwise, if you born outside, na to come dey organise visa for the pikin to reenter the country and then arrange application to Home Office for your pikin’s Pali. i think the circle is completed when those children become adults with families of their own as they’ll now be considered as “full fledged Brits”, able to claim proper ancestry because one or both parents were British. (… Clearly, this is a very pertinent research topic for many Nigerians ?).

    • Monica

      September 1, 2015 at 7:11 am

No, her children will not qualitfy for British citizenship unless herself or her hubby is one. Automatic qualification by birth was stopped in 1982. And if she or hubby was a British citizen, the children would qualify regardless of what country they were born in.

    • Yomi

      September 1, 2015 at 7:52 am

Nope. Her children are not British. At least one parent must be a permanent resident (also called ILR) or a British citizen for your child to be British.

    • Anna

      September 1, 2015 at 10:08 am

However though, if none of the parents were British at the time of the child’s birth, for example they were on a legal work visa or one of the tier whatever visa, or even a visiting visa; when the child was born, that child can only become British citizen if he lives in the country/resident in Britain for 3 years at a stretch. I heard it’s been extended to 5 years but I’m not sure. He can only visit another country but not spend more than 2 months outside the UK. If the child complies to this, he or she could then qualify for British citizenship seeing as he or she already has a birth certificate which clearly demonstrates he or she was born in the UK.

Even this lady’s children can return to the UK years down the line to claim their citizenship as they were born there and have their birth certificate as proof. Except they were banned due to their mothers offence against the NHS, but that’s a diffenent matter.
Most of my friends born after 1982 were able to do this using postgraduate studies in those years 3 years visa was granted after MSc. studies. This would add up to the 3 years requirement that is one year for MSc plus another 2 years of stay with post study visa would add up to 3 years of stay which by then the person would have qualified.

But 2 years post study has been scrapped, trust Nigerians. People are now using PhD to cover up to get an extended lengthy of stay! Lol cos PhD is like 3 years or so?
      Hehehe!

“I did not receive the bill, if I did I would pay it,” this is what is wrong with our society, nobody takes responsibility. What is wrong with simply saying 145 thousand pound is beyond what we can afford, I don’t know you but I know you probably don’t have 50 million naira cash laying around and if you do please do the needful and pay them or atleast reach an agreement with them. People in that society work and contribute to that service which you have gone and stolen from them via the taxes they pay, I am glad the kids are alright because that is paramount, but please all the braggadocio of I would have paid is not what you need to clear your name. If you really do have 50 million naira laying around please pay the hospital for they need the money more than you do.

      It is for the passport.
Nigerians can sell their birth rights for passports. Let’s be honest, they’re also very good hospitals in Nigeria. But most people do it for passports, in the process they incur debts they cannot pay. Foolishness.
I don’t understand why anyone will go to any European country to birth their babies, as none of them give nationality/passports by birth; like they’ve made it very clear. Anyway, very soon America will soon change their laws.
Nigerians, smh. These people will graduate, finish school and stay back, have rickety jobs, depend on their Parents financially, all for passports, no matter how low it takes them. Okay, you eventually get the passport, then what? Smh.

Clearly, she had no intention of paying her bill. UK citizens and residents would be paying taxes and NICs and then you just go there to exploit them. If everyone there was doing their kain ‘gbajue’, you think the system would still be working. They’re even nice that they banned her for 5 years. And see the arrogance with which she’s claiming she would have paid. I understand it’s a lot of money but she could have made a payment plan or something more honorable than bailing on them. She’s an embarrassment to this country.

Shameless woman. It’s sad that people believe having your child abroad guarantees an easy stress free life for them. This is a very big lie from the pit of hell. I’m also glad no-one has said, Yoruba people. They are benefit cheats and like doing stuff like this. I just wonder if it was an Igbo person, whether it would still be the same. On the drug trafficking thread lots of people were saying Igbo this and that’s how they go all over Europe pushing drugs and bla bla bla but I digress… the woman should be banned for life. It’s very wrong to take advantage of a system the way she has. Very wrong.

You’re a pathetic tribalist! I’ve noticed this from your comments. Please shut up! You actually disgust me. This has absolutely nothing to do with being Yoruba or Igbo. What a dimwit. Smh, it’s unfortunate.

@ Olanma, forgive me if reading and comprehension is not one of your strong suits. If it was, you would understand what I said and not just rush to post off- point comments just for the fun of it. Read my comment again and feel free to feel like shit for yours. You’re welcome.

Oh please, forgive me for not understanding your unnecessary tribalism. Don’t try to act smart, your comment was out of place, offensive and completely unnecessary. This is not the 1st time you’ll be called out for something like this on BN. Such a petty tribalist. Bye Felicia!
      I just can’t with you.

    See?SMH
5 years ban isnt enough….anyways,i trust the UK embassy,if they ever give a UK Visa again it will be my God’s grace. She knew she was expecting quintuplets that was why she traveled in the first place,ok after it didnt she expect that she was gonna pay after delivery, when she didnt get the bill which i believe was sent to her sister’s house address and the sister must have notified her why didnt she pay?she is claiming she didnt get it. She knew it wasnt gonna be easy for her here in Nigeria(because she would have lost either 2 of the kids or her own life as a form of pay back trust our health system because somehow they will say because she didnt pay for a particular thing this and that happened) so she took her cheating nature to UK spoiling our name.

This woman is a perfect example of what Yorubas call Amunibuni eran ibiye, so when she enrolled as a patient she was not told how much she will pay. Was she told the service was free. It would have been more honourable to admit that she could not pay the bill, apologise and make arrangements to pay the bill in instalments. This is really shameful. I wonder what sort of values she will instill in those five children.

Maybe it’s just me – I find her response to Daily Mail very condescending, arrogant and thoughtless. This is how some rarely get help. She knew she was wrong, sure the issue has been on for almost half a decade now and could be tiring to her having to answer questions everytime – but madam, didn’t you anticipate all these while fashioning out your scam?
You’re a very pathetic and shameless person.
And to think her family is a reputable one. You’re an embarrassment.

There was a similar story of a british couple that went to the US for vacation and the lady went into premature labour, she had the baby and racked up a bill of 200k dollars…it was scary to pay, but they tried to rally round with support here and there, and made an initial 12k payment. Not sure if they have fully paid, but atleast they made an effort to pay….Aunty should follow suit and close her eyes and start paying up!!

  50. Mike Peirson

    September 1, 2015 at 4:12 pm

This is typical of African people stealing from the British taxpayer, the – should be made to pay, not the British people, or Nigeria should pay the bill. Freeloading -.

  51. Truthbetold

    September 1, 2015 at 4:30 pm

Why is everybody attacking her? Yes she obviously scammed the British system…I am sure she is very embarrassed and regrets her actions. My question is, this Ohi of a husband that abandoned a woman with 5 babies! He is described as wealthy abi? Why did he not settle the hospital bills (married or separated)? Besides, the lady must have done some fertility treatments to conceive this number of children in one pregnancy which the man would have been involved. Shameless man! see how the mother of children who must have passed through a very difficult (quins) pregnancy is being disgraced…. abegi..enough of the insults on her,she cheated, etc…some of us may even do worse things sef….may God protect and bless the children..may they grow up healthy with God’s favor upon them….Amen!
