Diezani’s Lawyer Says Former Minister “Was Never Arrested, She was Merely Invited”

Published

 on

OPEC Oil Meeting

Diezani Alison-Madueke‘s family’s lawyer, Oscar Onwudiwe, has responded to the recent controversies surrounding the embattled minister.

Here is what Onwudiwe said via a statement, according to ThisDay:

On reports about Diezani’s arrest

This may be because they know the stories are false but it feeds the mood of the moment; hence, the silence from Diezani all along. It is worth emphasising that Mrs Alison-Madueke was never arrested or detained and her passport was never seized. She was merely invited, and she honoured it promptly.

…but there is a limit to how much any reasonable person can bear the tactics of these cyber terrorists. We all know that what makes a lie fly is the little truth contained therein. This happens to be the weapon used by most online news media to feed their weird obsession with defaming highly placed people.

On allegations that Diezani attempted to purchase a £13 billion  property on Hyde Park Street in London

This claim is utterly false and laughable, for the amounts mentioned are only in the imagination of the reporters. This property is quite popular. It belongs to a well-known eminently successful Nigerian entrepreneur who would also find this allegation embarrassing as the intention to sell the property has neither been contemplated nor disclosed to any person.

On Diezani’s cancer treatment

The Madueke family, like most other families, has its own challenges. For instance, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke has been receiving treatment for cancer in the UK which started while she was in office. The health crisis has unfortunately exacerbated in recent times.

She completed months of chemotherapy just last week and she is scheduled to undergo surgery next week in London. The family has been bearing this challenge with prayers and as much grace and fortitude as possible; and would plead with all reasonable Nigerians to pray for her recovery so that she can face this allegation and give account of her stewardship. Yes, she can—and very well, too

On reports that Diezani’s step son, Ugonna, owns three properties

The USA is a country which runs on transparency, accountability and technology. A little honest effort by the online news media would have provided in a few minutes the true ownership of the properties at issue.

The 11711 Scooter Lane (a three-bedroom town house) in Fairfax, Virginia, was acquired by the Madueke family in 1997 when Ugonna was only 10 years old.

records available to the appropriate authorities in the United States can also confirm that 13116 Silver Maple Court in Bowie, Maryland, USA belongs to an uncle of the Madueke siblings and was purchased in 1995 when Ugonna was only eight years old.

As a student of the University of Maryland in 2002, Ugonna stayed with his uncle at the said address. All of this was before Mrs. Diezani was appointed to government office.

It is evident that what the online news media did was to turn on an internet search engine and maliciously reported that every property where Ugonna Madueke has ever lived in the United States or used as his address must belong to him. The description of the properties as posh was the icing on the propaganda cake. This is not only unprofessional, as it offends the tenets of journalism, it is clearly not in resonance with good conscience.

On allegations that Ugonna and his cousins registered Hadley Petroleum Solutions Limited which they used to deal in Nigerian crude oil sales

As young men bubbling with enthusiasm and fantasy, they actually registered a company but after two years of no jobs, the company folded up.

The company never had a bank account, let alone being a trader of Nigeria’s crude oil.

On reports that Beatrice Agama, Diezani’s 81-year-old mother owns a house in the United Kingdom

Mrs. Agama has no house or property in the United Kingdom.

She has been staying in a rented two-bedroom flat from where she is receiving medical attention for a broken femur.

Her son, Timi Agama, who has been living in the UK for decades, used to have a house in the UK long before his sister was appointed to government and he sold it long ago.

Since then, he has no house in the UK. Archbishop Doye Agama of the Apostolic Pastoral Congress in Manchester, who is in his 60s, is a successful professional and consultant well known amongst his peers, but he does not own Unit 8 Quebec Building in Manchester which the online newspaper ascribed to him.

Miscellaneous

According to the report “their lawyer added that the Madueke family had taken a decision on how to appropriately deal with those who are on a mission to soil their hard-earned family name.”

Very soon now u will tell us you work in SPDC. Mtcheeeeeeew. Empty barrel. Deziani was not in a contract awarding position while at SPDC. I say cos l work there. SPDC is not a ministry or govt office were you steal and go free. While she was there, there was no scandal. So Ada Nnewi you are here repeating dem say.

Typical shallow Nigerians, SPDC less over inflated salaries is not a big deal, most of you when retired/re trenched or sacked from there can’t bring any coveted technical skills into most business institutions…I have never applied to work there cause quite frankly it was never really my goal to get paid for doing virtually nothing and have insufficient valuable professional skills in case I get bored and decide to change organizations or careers… So Dear SPDC employee, continue in your self deceit…

Ada Nnewi, for crying out loud stop telling outright lies and misleading people. Diezani was never hd Admin. Head administration. In Shell is a junior position and limited to depts. She was a Director. Do you know what it means to be a Director in Shell? She may have done wrong but don’t misinform the public just Becos you want to trend.

What is the point that the “family lawyer” is trying to make? Is it his position that Mrs. Madueke did not steal ANY public funds? Yes or no? Instead of sticking to issues, he is busy telling us about one Ugonna to distract the public from focusing on the person in the situation: Mrs. Madueke.

Ugonna is now the step-son because she’s no more in a position of power and because she’s now in trouble. When she was high and mighty, Ugonna and Uju were referred to as her son and daughter respectively.

They didn’t know they had a hard-earned family name when she was going about with impunity? It’s now they are remembering after they tried to erase the memory of his late wife (a very humble and nice woman by the way) all because of money. SMH! The cuckold Admiral. Carry your cross. You will need it.

I give up on nigerians. just look at the comments about allison having cancer.

if she has cancer, SO WHAT? that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t pay for what she has done

there are people who are serving time in prison who have cancer, so kini big deal?

u do ur surgery, after u recover, u go for trail or go back to prison and serve ur sentence. if u die in prison, they send ur dead body back to ur family to bury.

I love white people, they will never ever let u off the hook so easily.
u politicians can’t keep stealing our money. enough is enough

nigerians pls never feel sympathy for any nigerian politician. this people dont care about you or your retired mother or father or your children etc

they steal without remorse. they dont steal 1 million or 2 million, they steal 100 billion 200 billion. so why should u feel sorry for them when something bad like cancer happens to them.

Went back and read the story about her arrest from the link that Bellanaija provided: http://thenationonlineng.net/court-stops-diezani-from-leaving-uk-till-next-april/

According to that article, they arrested her and seized her passport until next year, so that they can finish their investigations. I’m not a lawyer, but I’ve seen enough Law and Order episodes to know that something is wrong with that report. Shouldn’t they conclude investigations before they go and arrest someone? Unless the UK legal system is different and people can get arrested based on suspicion.

And please, can someone point me to an article about this missing $13 billion that this woman is being accused of? Is it the same money that Sanusi said was never accounted for? Because if I remember correctly that was an issue between CBN and NNPC.

She’s a Naija politician so she’s probably guilty of corruption but I’m yet to see proof. At the moment, all I’m hearing is the usual Naija noise.

Anon, I did another google search and I found this article: thetrentonline.com/soundoff-diezani-alison-madueke-13-billion-is-hard-to-hyde-and-illiteracy/

The pictured Sun UK article seems to be suggesting that Diezani Alison-Madueke stole the ‘CBN vs NNPC’ £13 billion/$20 billion. And the writer seems to be indicting Diezani because she wanted to buy a property in Hyde Park. I went on to look up Hyde Park property prices and apparently you have properties there going for less than £3 million. I googled ‘Shell executive Director salary’ since Diezani used to be one. Google gave me the Shell CEO salary and he made 24.2 million euros in 2014. So assuming Deizani made half of that as an executive director, wouldn’t she be able to afford property in Hyde Park. And by the way, she’s the current president of OPEC and I’m sure that comes with benefits as well.

Like I said before, she’s probably corrupt(not as sure anymore), but all these allegations seem to be just noise, for now.

No comment from me yet. Will be patient until the investigations are concluded. I don’t believe anything Sahara reporters write, because they simply have no credibility.
In the meantime, am appealing to Buhari and his team to create institutions to check corruption. Since he very much, rightly so, wants to fight it. They should use technology and administrative know how to put systems and processes in place.
What we are doing now Is simply chasing Shadows. Let’s make it impossible or very hard for people to steal in the first place. Even if they do, let’s create ways of easily detecting and tracking things,as they unfold, not much later.
Believe it or not stealing may be going on now right under our noses as we are distracted by these stories. .
Talk of the scarlet letter! !!!

I quite agree with ogeAdiro on a few things. There has been a lot of noise and exaggerated facts surrounding the Diezani issue. While I applaud the move, a good start to rid corruption ‘they’ need to provide constructive feedback and real facts instead of all the giraffe neck bloggers photocopying news.
In politics distraction is a tool that is used over and over to take the attention off the truth. Biko, I am not saying that the subject is not guilty or is but with all the noise it looks like the story is being blown out of proportion. That said until the subject is charged and even after Nigeria has bigger fish to fry our country needs help! Let’s hope that this is a start and not games.
