Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Buni Yadi, Yobe, on Monday pelted government officials who attended the launching of agricultural empowerment programme organised by the Victims Support Fund (VSF).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports VSF was in Buni Yadi to commence the ceremonial distribution of seeds, fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides to the IDPs.

However, the IDPs, who were apparently displeased with the the items, chanted songs of protest throughout the event, saying,” we need immediate food and not long term solutions.

“We have been neglected; we are hungry; we need food, we cannot farm,” they chanted.

Some youths among the IDPs, laid ambush on the convoy of the officials and pelted them with stones and other objects.

Governor Ibrahim Gaidam, who was represented at the occasion by Mustapha Gajirima, the Commissioner for Agriculture, was rushed into his waiting vehicle while other officials jumped into their vehicles and zoomed off.

Security agents at the scene intervened to protect the officials from harm, as they rushed back to Damaturu the state capital.
