#RIPKeshi: The World Mourns the “Big Boss”
The football world woke up to the shocking news of the passing one of Nigeria’s finest player and coach, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi.
Emmanuel Ado a brother to the late coach said that the 54-year-old died of Cardiac arrest in the early hours of Wednesday, June 8th.
“With thanksgiving to God, the Ogbuenyi Fredrick Keshi family of Illah in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, announces the death of Mr. Stephen Okechukwu Chinedu Keshi.
Our son, brother, father, father-in-law, brother-in-law, has gone to be with his wife of 35 years (Nkem). Kate Keshi, who passed on on the 9th December 2015.
Since her death, Keshi has been in mourning. He came back to Nigeria to be with her. He had planned to fly back today Wednesday, before he suffered a cardiac arrest. He has found rest,” Ado said in a statement.
The Chairman of the Edo State Football Association (EFA), Frank Ilaboya quoting Keshi’s family member, Ricky Aburimen, said that he only complained of a leg ailment while holidaying at his Airport road home in Benin before he passed away on the way to hospital at about 3 AM.
Along with Egypt’s Mahmoud El–Gohary, Keshi is one of only two men to have won the Africa Cup of Nations as both a player and coach. He is also the only Nigerian coach to have lifted the trophy.
Keshi had his debut game for the Super Eagles in 1981 at age 20, and retired in 1994. He had 64 caps and scored 9 goals.
Keshi who qualified the Togolese football team for the 2006 world cup (the only coach to have done so for the country) also managed the Malian national football team.
He is the fifth member of the glorious 1994 Super Eagles team to die, after Uche Okafor, Thompson Oliha, Rashidi Yekini and Wilfred Agbonavbare.
The Big Boss is survived by four children and his mother.
Nigerians, and indeed the world have been mourning the football icon since the news of his death.
