Freeze Reacts to Bishop Oyedepo’s Statement on Covenant Uni School Fees

OAP Freeze shared his thoughts on Bishop David Oyedepo‘s statement on Covenant University school fess – click here if you missed it.

Oyedepo is General Overseer of the church that owns the school, and stated it was a “godly agenda”.

Freeze pic-stitched Oyedepo’s photo and these comments and had this to say –

david oyedepo fees

Dear Pastor,

Please show me where in the Bible God spoke of school fees, let alone ordained or ‘approved’ the price…..

Dear Nigerian sheep, follow the shepherd, not the butcher…..

    This is stupid!!

Covenant has WORKERS ranging from the VC to cleaners, they have to buy research equipment and maintain their environment, all of these, shockingly cost money. Covenant is a business which has set its price, people aren’t forced there, if you cannot afford it, then don’t go. It really is that simple.

    Occasionally, let’s try logic first.

There is a simple solution though, all of you complaining can accept a tax increase so Covenant can be subsidised by government money.

“According to reports, Bishop David Oyedepo in a telecast to a pre-Shiloh 2016 Convention gathering of his church urged those criticizing the SCHOOL FEES charged by Covenant University to desist to avoid incurring the wrath of God.”

“Why are YOU so ignorant? What good education is Covenant University offering?”- A Real Nigerian

The original article was about fee complaint, you indeed complained about “the fraud of the man behind it”. But like everybody else, pivoted to complaining about Covenant itself.

Two out of the three comments, Mr Freeze linked, complain about fees.

      “Dear Pastor,

“Please show me where in the Bible God spoke of SCHOOL FEES, let alone ordained or ‘approved’ the price…..”-FRZ”

So saying “nobody is complaining about the fees” is in my opinion, a bit of a stretch.

Workers or no workers is not an excuse for the high fees paid in a school owned by a church. Churches nowadays are simplyfor profit organizations, not an organization that cares and caters for God’s people. Do you know that public universities in USA still have a strong funds drive from alumni, friends and supporters(usually rich folks) to supplement what they receive from government, you don’t have to make students pay highly just to give them a good education. The church can bear easily 70% of costs used in running the school, many Orthodox churches still do this. The real question is this, where is morality? Sense of justice? Where someone that cannot afford three square meals a day builds a school for the rich man’s kid to attend? That is wickedness. And many of you are supporting it because you have money and can afford to buy a phone or laptop and browse. Simple problem with a simple solution, but our greed simply gets in the way. Admission should be offered to the best students that are members of that church, irrespective of wealth, then the church handles about 60% to 70% of costs. Let the church initiate a special fund raising for keep the school going. That way, they can build more universities and accommodate more members.

Uncle Freeze, i wish i could weigh in on everything you have done that does not make sense to me but alas i can’t. You can keep weighing in, it is your calling. You have been ordained for this. Soon you will become an employer of labour as per the organization you told me about “Empty Barrels International” while those that did not seek your advice or complain to you about the amount of school fees they paid at covenant university will be continuously grateful that they had the opportunity to invest in quality education rather than buy wristwatches wether fake or original. I pray God keeps you in perfect health to see the heights that true Eagles who passed through and let the school pass through them will achieve.

You are comparing Primary education geared towards the 19th century to University education geared towards the 21st century.????

One of my deep fears, one day Nigerians will realise that the same technology that allows us to communicate with people miles away is moving at such a fast pace, that the few jobs the robots leave us will be taken by IIT graduates from India and Tshingua graduates from China. How bloody will it be?

But that’s a topic for another day.

Nigerians sabi rake for no reason!!
My child attends a Christian private school run by my American church here in Yankee.
Fees are high but comparable to other private schools.
I am sure there are church members who can’t afford to send their kids there. So they send their kids where they can. No wahala!
Same applies to other friends scattered around the US and U.K.

Why on earth should I feel because I pay tithes and offerings that it should be free. Missing the whole point!
My church does plenty plenty charitable activities. As does Winners.
Don’t I expect my child’s teacher to receive salary? Dont the teachers at Covenant need to be paid?
I can go on and on.

Ppl like Freeze are like misplaced trumpets, blowing in all the wrong places! What are you doing with your status? The money you spent on your watches, won’t it have paid for scholarships for many anywhere??? Why can’t you mobilize local and international folks to donate money for your own free school and let’s see how you are able to sustain it, and maintain any quality standards!

Go and sleep, maybe it will reset your brain. It’s the masses following the blind that I pity.

The issue is not the fees being high or not, we’ve known Covenant university and their high fees, some universities here even charge more. The issue is saying the fees are god-ordained and anyone questioning or criticising it is incurring the wrath of God! Haba!!!
Ppl have been comparing g but that hasn’t stopped some from sending their children to those schools, why make such a statement?

    Can this freeze shut up….
Ok on dis issue, I feel wat he meant by God ordained is dat he isn’t charging in excess with respect to the services, like he is charging accordingly to what is being rendered.
So I think d main problem with people is jealousy, covenant isn’t d highest paying private uni,so pple are jealous cos covenant is among d top universities in Nigeria nd is really doing well..
I used to be on d other side nd beef d school till I actually visited d school…. free wifi, quality teaching, decent environment nd most importantly no STRIKE, it isn’t govt owned so no subsidies for them,
    1. They pay staffs monthly while students pay fees yearly
    2. Cost of fuel or phcn bills erryday
    3. Cost of maintenance and all
Where u expecting dem to collect 35k cos dat is my fees in yabatech where dere are over 500 students in one miserable class, nd like 16 people in a room for hostel…. it is 8 plus squatters nd sometimes hangers u can be up to 20 with strikes, no water no light.
Trust me if I could start again, am so going dere and will happily pay d God ordained fees for my convenience, time, nd spiritual Build up…….

So why didn’t the Bishop simply say these?
Why is he lying that God ordained the fees? So God wrote down how much students will pay or what?
Why is he threatening people with fire and broke stone if they talk about it?
Is he a cult master or he just likes to use people’s head because he knows Nigerians will cower once they hear God.
A little insight on how the school is run would have been enough but No.. your Paaapa in the Lord had to add Maggi and Salt..

How many times on this blog will we tell so-called Christians to go and actually READ, STUDY and MEDITATE on their Bibles BEFORE coming out to embarrass themselves and display their ignorance.

“”So God wrote down, etc, etc”” The bishop is “”lying that God ordained the fees””,

I am addressing your ignorance about the character, nature, willingness, ability, desire, interest and RECORD of the Almighty God concerning such matters which you seem to think impossible. Please go through the Old Testament (do the study and find all the various Books, chapters and verses yourself; they are there in abundance.) and with open eyes read and see for yourself all the places where God would, for example – oh! First of all, before I forget, you mentioned writing. That is something so basic, so well-known, I would have thought it would have jumped at you.: God wrote the 10 Commandments by Himself. By His Own Finger. God wrote one copy, Moses wrote the other at God’s dictation. God i.e. Jesus Christ wrote in the sand . God sent a Hand to write on the wall “”Mene mene tekel upharsin.”” (from which we get the popular saying: Read the writing on the wall.)n – I was saying, with open eyes read and see for yourself all the places in the Old Testament where GOD would tell Moses all the exact measurements, in inches and cubits, all the precise furniture and furnishings to be made and their measurements and the exact materials to be used to make them, their colour, their colour in different sections or parts of the same item/thing, their exact weight, who should make them, God would actually gives names, where each piece of furniture was to be placed, etc, etc. God would design clothing from top to bottom IN DETAIL. Perfume, He’d specify the ingredients and give exact specifications as to weight of each ingredient. God specified the EXACT AMOUNT OF MONEY AND ITEMS that His people were to bring as offerings for different occasions e.g. after childbirth, what offering a woman would bring if she had given birth to a son, and if to a girl. The same for everything one can think of, GOD commanded inn specifics and detail.

Unilorin also has all what you listed and no one claims that’s God ordained. I get that the owner of Covenant is a businessman while that of Unilorin isn’t but why falsefully, malicously and fraudulently bring God into it. He should have simply said the truth ‘I am a businessman and I must make returns from my investment’…Now the source and propeity of that investment might be another hot topic but at least he would have told the truth in this instance. #Whylie

We really need to stop misyarning when it comes to ordained pastors and the church.
Of course, there are many fake\profit oriented pastors but we need to be careful with our judgement.
People keep making silly comments on how the pastor keeps taking from the members. My parents are pastors and I know how sometimes you check tithe envelope and see that only about 10 out of 30 who came out paid substantial money. Offering envelop nkor? Na so so N10 & N20. The Church have bills like, rent, electricity bills, paying salary. Buying chior robe, drumsets, planning programmes, welfare(some churches provide food, school fees and even house rent for some members) etc. God help a pastor who doesn’t have his money because believe you me, the struggle is real…

You have a point, it is easier for a rich man to pass through the eye of the needle than to enter the kingdom of God.

That said, people are “judging” Mr Freeze because he’s the worst sort of public pundit, one that uses faulty logic to lead impressionable people to stupidity.

Read his post carefully, the comments attached, their gripe is with Covenant fees. That however make zero sense:

We know modern university education is expensive, we also know that Covenant is private, so has no government subsidies, so what exactly is the complaint here?

The second gripe is, but he’s a Christian. That however is a slippery slope, for example you enjoin him to sell his cars and impoverish himself for the school. What will that solve??? Go through it logically, his Rolls has a driver, a mechanic, his mansions have staff. He throws it all into Covenant, following Christ’s injunction. His personal staff, they lose their job, his lost wealth at most sustains Covenant for a year. ALL businesses need funds, Covenant is a business.

The third, he got it from his congregation. Again I’m really wary about telling people what to do with their money. That aside, so?? Covenant benefits the economy, it employs people, it trains people who get well paying jobs, it conducts research which benefits the general community e.t.c. No single university in the world sustains itself without donations.

The final one, Ehn his congregation cannot afford the school. How many Nigerians can afford EPL stadium tickets or Court side seats or Super bowl tickets? 0.1%?? How many support these teams they can’t afford?? Humans make irrational decisions all the time.

He was wrong to invoke God over something as mundane and easily explained as school fees (The Lord’s name in vain people), but just because he’s wrong, doesn’t mean WE have to be.

Example of me making an irrational decision, could have spent this 5 minutes conjugating German verbs.??????Nutzlos!

Personally, l don’t consider pastors like Oyedepo as true Christians. The truth is that if older churches like Catholic, Anglican, Methodist, Baptist Mission etc in the 1950/60s did not sponsor or subsidise the education of some of these pastors, none of them would be here saying all this gibberish, using the name of God.

      November 6, 2016 at 3:30 pm

Your comment reeks of ignorance. I tried so hard not to jump under your comment but I could not just resist and in the process I accidentally liked it which even got me more upset. Did you read what you typed before posting?? You’re talking of education in the 1950’s??? How can you even compare then and now? Please what item did you buy in the 50’s that is the same price now?? Go to catholic, baptist, etc private schools and ask how much their students pay. A family friend had to move his son from a catholic private school in ota where they increased the fees to over a million naira. So please what are you telling me? Times have changed, a dollar is not equal to a naira. These peoole pay staff on a monthoy basis plus electricity bills, water bills, etc. Yes its expensive and if you can’t afford it go where you can afford. Parents know faith based/ private universities are very expensive all over the world. Its a business. And those saying he lied for saying God ordained the fees, there’s a verse in the bible that says the carnal mind cannot receive the things of the spirit because they are foolishness to him. You may not agree with what he said but there are actually Christians who hear and converse with God like he is in human form, people who table everything to God before taking a step. So it is very possible that God gave him the exact fees that should be paid. Just like God gave Noah the direct specifications for building the ark. Think about it, Noah’s ark had only one little window at the top and it housed every animal on earth (2 of each kind) plus his family. Which ship can survive with just one little window?? When God speaks he is very specific. Because you haven’t gotten to that aspect in your christian life doesn’t mean it’s impossible and people haven’t gotten there. On the other hand freeze needs to weigh in on the matters oof his life rather than attack every little thing on social media. He seems like someone who is very jobless and doesn’t know how to mind his business.

  13. Y'all better brace up

    November 6, 2016 at 6:48 am

Freeze, like i sad to you earlier, you are too carnal to understand spiritual things

what he meant by that is that the Tuition fee is not a rip off and God is his witness. Tuition fee is justified. The man has gotten to a level that God is his air that he breathes. He hardly speaks anything without referring to God cos that is his sustenance and livelihood

Hmmm! Private universities in Nigeria actually came about due to the consistent lengthy strikes in Nigerian government owned universities. The issue of missionary run schools or church owned schools is not a new thing in Nigeria, alot of us attended Catholic schools, Protestant Schools etc. There are Islamic schools also. Church owned primary and secondary schools were run side by side state owned schools, unity schools, military schools etc. Back in the day, a lot of people preferred attending state schools and unity schools due to the subsidised fees. However back then, subsidity did not necessarily translate to poor standards, back then unity schools had some of the best teachers and facilities. Unfortunately the system suffered a rot that is yet to be reversed, the rot ate into our tertiary institutions hence the rise of the private sector tertiary form of education. I see nothing wrong with it, a lot of these institutions are being managed by lecturers and staff that paid their dues in government owned institutions of higher learning. These institutions are here to stay and are a welcome alternative to studying a four year course for six years or not seeing your name in any list in all the universities you chose when completing your JAMB application form then JAMB will graciously throw you to one school you know nothing about to study one course you have absolutely no interest in.

I have actually gone to CU on visitation purposes not once, not twice, and I can tell u that that school is a good one. Nigerians are getting funnier by the day, I don’t understand the wave of confusion that is sweeping all over. I also know of a Christian primary school in Lagos here that the school fees are subsidized, but a lot of people who don’t know the inside details will still come out and yarn dust.

  17. Deb

    November 6, 2016 at 12:17 pm

    I understand your confusion.

You see, to most Nigerians, church is a building and Jesus is a historical figure. People have no personal relationship with God and do not hear his son’s voice. So when someone says fees are God-ordained, it insults their senses. Ordained by who?

Well, five years ago, I was in a corper when God told me I, a member of the (very) lowest income strata in Nigeria would attend Harvard. 5 years later I have been educated in two of the top schools in the world, including Harvard, fully funded. So God speaks to His children.

In the Bible, there are stories of God giving people specific instructions – including Moses’ about the Tabernacle to the color of ropes and curtains! God is a very specific God.

The question here is not if God can speak, it is if the people commenting know God at all.

As to calling Bishop a deceiver, I have one more Bible thought for you. The Pharisees responded to a miracle by Jesus by saying He was possessed by a devil. Jesus said in response that only one sin would never be forgiven – that is even praying for forgiveness would not work and a person who committed it was hell-bound regardless – that is the sin against the Holy Ghost. Saying the Holy Ghost was actually evil, like Freeze, and all of you have perhaps.

But you say, I talked about Bishop not the Holy Ghost. Jesus prayed in the end of John – that God would show us we were one with Him and the Father and the Spirit. He also says its the Holy Spirit that teaches us all things – tells us what God wants.

    So good luck to y’all.

Oyedepo said that “God” told him about school & school fees; the fact is which God?? b’cos there are many gods and many lords in heaven and on the earth(1Cor8:5). This is the time to test every spirit and also the spirit in oyedepo(1Jn4:1) b’cos he speaks more of money and material wealth. The God of our Lord Jesus Christ spoke through Jesus Christ that you CANNOT serve the interests of God and also serve the standards of money (Lk16:13). It is the spirit of the ANTICHRIST that speaks more of the glory of this world than of the coming kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ. So, looking through the eyes of the Holy scriptures, who is Oyedepo???

  25. Stephen

    November 7, 2016 at 1:34 pm

All you Oyedepo apologists, I think you all should just shut up! Does the cost of maintenance justify the exorbitant school fees he is collecting on an institution built with the free will donations(tithes & offerings) of people(deceived church members)??? If the school was built with free money, then there is no basis for such crazy amount as school fees and, worst still, justifying it with God’s approval. Poppycock! If you still choose to stay deceived, be my guest. Go on, die in your ignorance!
