Nigerians in the U.S. Hail Trump’s Appointment of Adebayo Ogunlesi

The Nigerian community in U.S. has lauded the appointment of Adebayo Ogunlesi by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump into his Economic Advisory Team, saying it could signal a positive trend for Africa.

The Nigerians told the Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria  (NAN) in New York that Ogunlesi has been an excellent ambassador for Africa and Nigeria in particular.

Michael Adeniyi, former  President of a Nigerian U.S.-based group, the Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians Inc. (OAN Inc), told NAN that “Bayo Ogunlesi is an excellent and extraordinary Nigerian.

“He is very humble, brilliant and outstanding in every way you can think of. He has achieved outstanding success in Wall Street and he’s a proud ambassador of Africa, which he started in Kings College.

For him to be appointed into Trump’s Economic Advisory Team is a honour to Africa and especially to Nigeria. He will add value to the Trump’s team and he’s worthy of celebrating.

Prior to his appointment, Bayo Ogunlesi has been a pride of Africa; he reached the pinnacle of his career in Walls Street through his company which he built from the scratch. He is a round peg in a round hole,” he said.

Another Nigerian, Yetunde Odugbesan-Omede, a Professor of Global Affairs and Political Science, at Rutgers University and Farmingdale State College, said Ogunlesi has all it takes to contribute to a positive American economic outlook

“Mr Ogunlesi has an impressive background and will be able to add his perspective and vast knowledge on how to move America forward that will yield positive economic outcomes,” Odugbesan-Omede said.

Odugbesan-Omede, however, said it was too early to say if the appointment would have any impact on Nigeria.

“It is too early to determine or come to a conclusion at this moment on whether Mr Ogunlesi’s role will have any impact on Nigeria’s foreign and economic policy. I hope that Mr Ogunlesi will provide guidance on improving both economic and political U.S.-Nigeria relations,” Odugbesan-Omede said.

Spokesperson for the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the UN, Pastor Akinremi Bolaji, said Ogunlesi’s appointment was a positive development for Nigeria and Africa.

“I am not speaking for the Nigerian diplomatic community because I am not in the position to do so; it’s for the Embassy in Washington to do.

Speaking as a Nigerian, it is a good indication and positive development for Africa and Nigeria that we are among the best brains everywhere.

It is also to show you that one in every five Blacks is a Nigerian. It is a good indication for our economic and foreign policy.

It also shows that Africa and Nigeria have good ambassadors everywhere. Ogunlesi has to see himself as a representative of the Black race as the only Black man that made the list by further distinguishing himself.

I advise him to use his opportunity well and he should bring together people of integrity who will not smear his integrity,” Bolaji said.

Bolaji said the younger generation has a lot to learn from his distinction, adding that “journalists have a lot to do to tell us how he was able to weather the storm and got recognised worldwide”.

“It also shows that the best economic brains are scattered everywhere in Nigeria. We have the Dangotes in the North, Jim Ovias and Tony Elumelus in the East and South South and Otedola in the West, and now Ogunlesi.

“If we put our house together, we have people all over the world and at home who have all it takes for us to succeed,” Bolaji said.

Ogunlesi, who is the chairman of Global Infrastructure Partners, a private equity firm and one of Fortune 500 companies, was named a member of an economic advisory forum to Trump.

The 63-year-old Nigerian is the only African face in the 16-man team.

Nigerians are too gullible especially when it comes to white people. Trump picking a black person doesn’t make him less racist or not promote his white supremacy ideas. He’s just going to be lowkey and will get away with a lot. Afterall, he/his white majority in government, congress, wealthy class still call the shot. They are the token black people to keep everybody’s mouth shut same for appointing women. This is all dirty politics, they play their game well.
I don’t even know why Africans/black people always crying, whining about white people to validate them instead of focusing on themselves.
This is not to take away from Mr Ogunlesi’s accomplishment, he’s intelligent and impressive.

I’m very pro Trump… Not getting on the black pity party boat. If blacks want to rule then they should work for it, other blacks have done it and so can the rest. No one owes anyone sh**

Saying Trump is racist is not getting on black people’s party. it’s a fact and his behavior in general call for concerns.. It’s not only black people sharing their concerns, Jews, some whites, Asians and other minorities are talking. His flip flopping ways, less transparency, not diplomatic, speaking of other non white groups in a condescending way, his policies will benefit more of his rich friends etc This is not business where he can fire anybody at anytime, talk down on his employees or do cut throat business and get away with it. This is presidency where you have to show respect and be a perceptive leader.
White supremacy affects everybody in America because this country is built on immigrants not only whites. I’m against illegal immigration but his message of “make America great again” is resonating with whites who have hatred in their hearts toward others for no reason. Whites should be ready to compete with other groups and not see them as threat, It will certainly get interesting in the next four years.

Trump speaks to everybody that crosses him in a condescending manner, says more about certain people that they choose to make it about them.

Bet JEB wished being white saved him or Rosie or Megyn, or Ted.

Still waiting for Trump to pick a black person into his cabinet. African Americans must wait to be picked last it seems. Absolutely no respect for them by Trump. A Nigerian gets picked bf them, even if it’s not a cabinet position. Hah!
    Congrats sir!

” Still waiting for Trump to pick a black person
      into his cabinet.”

trump offered ben carson a position few days after he was declared the winner of the election. ben carson turned it down, saying he wasnt qualified enough for the position. some of u are just terribly misinformed. u are still relying on main stream media to give u news. main stream media hates trump. I’m surprised bellanaija is even posting this kind of news about trump that doesn’t show him in a bad light.

trump is still considering him for another post. housing and urban development.

What are they hailing Trump for. Just becod he is Nigerian. This kind of poor mentalituvis why we have not been able to develop Nigeria. I am sorry to say this we are a bunch of loosers. A country with with so much oil has so many people living in poverty without significant growth. This is unheard off.

Am sorry but there isnt any honour claimable here because he is ‘nigerian’. He was to a large extent raised and schooled in the states. America gave him the opportunities that allowed him to rise to where he is. America and his God made him. The only thing he has in common with nigerians is a yoruba name and black skin. When a proper nigerian born raised and schooled in ado ekiti is elected into a foreign office then we can claim honour and glory at once.

Nonsense you sound ridiculous. He is a kings college alumni who graduated and was accepted into the world’s best universities, graduated worked hard and became director and chairman of various large investment corporations. Aside from holding high positions abroad he never forgot about his roots being part of the African Development bank and African Finance Corporation. Why shouldn’t Nigerians be proud?
I first read about him over 6 years ago and he is an inspiration. There are different paths to success.

Love him a hate, Trump holds the power now, so anyone in his inner circle is at a massive advantage. Mr Ogunlesi is obviously no ones fool. If he goes in there and see’s ultra-white (I’m convinced that Trump is a supremist) tendencies or other unleasanteries, Im sure he’ll walk out.

Congrats Uncle Bayo on your appointment and make Nigeria proud. I am yet to hear that a section of America is complaining of marginalization or wants self-actualization because the job meant for their sister or brother has been given to Omo Nigeria. My Biafran Brothers, this is a lesson for you all, Stop whining/complaining about PMB and gets your acts together for the harvest is rich….

Congratulations to Mr. Ogunlesi! He will indeed be a positive addition to the Economic Advisory Team. That still does not change my view on Trump: He is a total jack-ass!! Will bring nothing but division among the Americans and other nations.
