The Gambia’s president, Yahya Jammeh has televised a conversation he had with the Chairperson of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

In the video, Jammeh is seen requesting the ECOWAS leader to facilitate the release of judges to hear his petition against the outcome of the December 1 election, in Gambia’s Supreme Court.

Jammeh said that is the only way to a peaceful resolution of the political crisis.

The Chief Justice of Gambia had said that he will not rule on the case, forcing Jammeh to request for ECOWAS’ assistance.

In the video, Sirleaf said she would work on it right away.

Responding to the video, Sirleaf said Jammeh had been playing games with her.

Speaking to BBC, she said:

Unfortunately, being the person that he is, he recorded and televised the conversation without advising me of his intent to do so.

Let me make it very, very clear. There is no change in Ecowas’ position. The constitution of the Gambia must be respected.

My only duty was to take his appeal and pass it on to the mediating team.

At the time he called me I was thinking that he was going to find a way out of this and he was going to be able to work with the team but clearly, clearly it was just a game. It was just a ruse on his part.
