#MyLagosDiaries: Tony Rapu visits a Brothel in search of Magdalene

#MyLagosDiaries: Tony Rapu visits a Brothel in search of Magdalene - BellaNaijaTony Rapu, in his weekly series tagged “My Lagos Diaries,” shares the story of Magdalene whom he went in search of at a brothel.

Magdalene, who had began going to church, still lived in the brothel and worked as a sex worker to earn a living.

News later came through that Magdalene, who was on the waiting list for a shelter for former sex workers in Alpha Beach, had died, and Pastor Rapu went to investigate.

He shared a video of himself at the brothel, writing:

Magdalene had begun to come to church but still lived and worked in a brothel in Badia. She had relocated to Lagos looking for a better life but got caught up in prostitution trying to make ends meet.
When we heard Magdalene had died, we went to investigate at the brothel. We heard conflicting reports of what could have happened to her. Meanwhile, Magdalene was on the waiting list for a room at Genesis House, our shelter in Alpha Beach for ex commercial sex workers. And while we were there we saw very young boys coming in to engage the services of the sex workers.

Sooooo whilst Magdalene was attending church and working as a sex worker part time, the church did not see the need to intervene in her situation? It was enough that she attended church? And only death and non attendance prompted the search for Magdalene? I don’t understand…

People like you who fault everything. She was on the waiting list for the church’s rehabilitation home. And no, they could not have house her when there was no place because they’re not federal universities who value crowd over quality. At least he noticed and went in search of her. You, what have you done??

I’m sure your own pastor is one of those Private jet daddies who would never talk to someone in ripped jeans, talkless of help out a prostitute. How many big pastors visit poor members of their own church, talkless of a brothel in a Lagos slum. They never come out to discuss abuse or domestic violence, only submit to your husband and tithing. But this is the one you have mouth to criticise today. Odiegwu.

Fancy attacking probably the only people who care enough for the deceased to even put her on an accommodation waiting list in a better environment for free…as part of her journey to a better life. Nah the pastor born Magdalene abi nah him be unah irresponsible government at local, state and federal government. How many such shelters has the government at any level built?. Yet some of you pay taxes and vote them in…talking of elections.. Is that not the only time they remember your existence. Pls make una channel una anger towards the right places. These attacks on everything Church needs to stop. The church is doing much already in the society…go do your investigations…problems still persists here and there simply the problems are too much.

as much as I agree with you, attacks on everything church SHOULD NOT STOP because they are well known for using their undue influence (legally recognisable, btw) to avoid all credibility even when lives are at stake. Attacking churches and pastors is not an attack on God and if people cannot tell the difference between God and the pastors then we have a serious problem.
How many pastors have gotten away with mysterious deaths? Fake miracles? Fraud? Adultery with underaged members (ie rape)? More rape? Misuse of church funds? Lack of accountability for how their private jets are acquired and maintained while the majority of their widows, orphans and disabled are uncared for while the churches claim to collect funds for these people? What of encouraging people to stay in abusive marriages which has led to the death of so many women? Judging divorcees and sacking them from official positions to the point that people would stay with cheating spouses who give them STDs? If you can criticise a president, including presidents of countries that are not yours, you can criticise a pastor. If they are innocent then they have nothing to be afraid of.
That being said, God bless people like Pastor Tony Rapu who are obviously doing their best to do God’s work.

May God continue to give you wisdom in a world that glorifies vanity. Your exemplary leadership resonates humility Mr Rapu.
