“This improves my chances” – Moghalu on Wole Soyinka’s Endorsement

On Friday, Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, in a statement, endorsed the presidential candidate of the Young Progressive Party, YPP, Professor Kingsley Moghalu.

Soyinka had, a few days ago, called on Nigerians to vote for a candidate different from President Muhammadu Buhari of the APC and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.

He said both parties and their candidates have failed Nigeria and have nothing new to offer the country.

Soyinka said in his statement:

Let me reiterate: there is over-abundant, but stifled leadership material, and there can be no excuse, now that that potential of high quality is being manifested, for constricting the political space in a population that is nudging two hundred million. And that statement is of course specially addressed to those who took part in this exercise, those who deliberated opted out of it, some of whom were assessed anyway. Such potential compelled us (Citizen Forum) to exercise utmost rigour in what proved to be a most daunting exercise. The final determination however is – the flag-bearer of the Young Progressive Party – KINGSLEY MOGHALU.

Reacting to the development, Moghalu said on Channels Television‘s Politics Today: “I am elated, I am encouraged, I am humbled, I am gratified all at once. This is a very good thing for my party, the YPP and my candidacy because of who Professor Wole Soyinka is in our country and in the world. He is a unique figure.”

He continued:

I think this improves my chances in the election. We appeal to all other alternative candidates to join us in a coalition under my leadership to defeat the old, recycled political class in this country once and for all.

We also appeal to others who may be looking at other processes of consensus to consider ending their search with me just as Professor Wole Soyinka and the Citizens Forum have done.

??? what chances??? You all think the grassroot, uneducated individual know who Wole Soyinka is? You have all sat down forming small parties, no attempt at actually campaigning to the average Nigerian i.e both educated and non educated. You think one endorsement from Mr. Soyinka means anything to the Mallam gateman, or Mai suya? These are the people that will vote Buhari or Atiku in. Even an individual like me that knows Mr. Soyinka is not voting for anyone based on any endorsement (although I am not voting). Maybe he thinks this will appeal to the Yoruba’s. I would say that’s totally ridiculous but I saw a post this week on IG that made me realize our tribalistic many still are, so who knows.
