Last night at the Weddings by MAI launch, as exclusively revealed on BellaNaija.com; former beauty queen/rapper, Munachi Abii was the “bride” while Uti Nwachukwu was the surprise “groom”!
Since last night, social networks including Twitter and Facebook have been buzzing with the news that “Muna & Uti are married”. Well, as you know it was not a real wedding though it definitely had all the fun and fab moments we enjoy at weddings.
It was an absolutely fabulous event and BN will be bringing you the full scoop from the launch of Weddings of MAI.

Ok..I will take d time to explain to those that don’t fully understand. Mai Atafo has branched into the bridal aspect of fashion. To launch his bridal line, he had a show wit all d trappings of a real weddin, bride, groom, cake n all. Munachi was d model bride n Uti d model groom. So they r not married, ave seen “happy married life Uti” on bb, and I was just shocked. They r not married, it could ave been any other 2 models for all u care

Dont say i am hating , just giving feedback that the designer needs if he/she wants to take it to the next level.. “Miffed” came here to say that MAI as a “designer” is entitled to copy the design of Catherine’s dress becasue other designers have done the same. That is patently untrue. High street shops and well-known knock-off merchants have done so, but no self-respecting DESIGNER would copy that dress stitch-for-stitch which ies exactly what MAI has done. They may reference it but just copying it wholesale is lazy and unprofessional.
MAI is very clever at marketing ( he knows that we are frivolous and enjoy all sorts of tackiness, hence this uti-munachi fake wedding farce) and his line will go down well with middle class Nigerians, who sadly don’t know better. My only problem with this is that he has billed himself as a designer and he is charging as such, whereas he doesn’t seem to do any designing at all. Well if uninformed Nigerians are willing to pay, then who am I to spoil his show? He should be careful though, the word is getting out about the poor quality of his work and one day na one day people eye go clear.

I may agree with some of your comments, but the dig at “middle class Nigerians” who “don’t know any better” isn’t right. Style is not dependent on social class/ standing. Tackiness is also seen among “high class Nigerians”. Please such disrespectful comments are not necessary.
Tackiness is seen amongst all classes of Nigerian society, especially amongst the upper classes actually. I singled out the middle classes because the more affluent people would probably do Vera Wang or something more obviously expensive and foreign. I wasn’t having a dig at all middle class people, just the ones that would pay this fellow 300,000 Naira (> 1000 pounds) for a wedding dress. You can get better fabrics and finishing at Debenhams for half that price.

While I commend mai for a worthy effort, its important to point out some areas whr he definitely needs to improve upon.
D jacket on uti fits poorly, d lines below r off. D bustle of d dress is terrible, in as much as it cascades it shud still hve some fitting. I also recommend d use of buttons cos I’ve heard it bears some significance to d luck of d bride. D fabric used is a poor choice. Might hve worked better if thr was some design but cos it runs down straight, looks very cheap.

Well if u ask me, the aim of the ‘royal wedding’ initiative is obviously working! Everyone’s talking at least now you know Mai has now added weddings to his line. And about d dress not being well designed, I’m really forced to believe you must have been invited to have a personal inspection of the dress cos you definitely are not judging by the mere pix we all seeing. *sigh* i really CANNOT get over Uti’s hair and earrings (and styled with dat pompadour on top!). Muna’s beauty and the “wedding ideal” makes it all okay. i’m not gonna criticize MAI here, lets remember dat he’s been dressing Omowunmi Akinnifesi for years now and she’s one of the best dressed women around, so he’s gotta be some good. I’ll withold judgement on whether he’s any good with wedding attire or not, time will tell.

I love Mai! He is good at what he does! The concept is nice, the dress is ok. But meeennnn the pix looks very very clumsy! No proper lighting, a shoe peeking in a corner, couldn’t they even arrange her dress for the shoot the list goes on…. common!! Not impressed at all. The decor from what i can see seems quite tacky for a ‘royal wedding’.

The designer missed the mark here. I AM SORRY… The dresses are poorly done and the fabric looks so cheap . It has no originality which is okay if you do it WELL. For my wedding I got a knock off copy of a beautiful designer wedding dress from china, the fabric was so lovely and well sewn for a whopping cost of $200 dollars ….lol , that’s right 200 dollars (about 30k naira) and the fabric was lovely and very well sewn…. Just as a feedback , maybe he needs to go to spend some time in china and see how its done

Talk is so cheap its unbelievable! If this Royal wedding reenactment had been done by oyibo people, all the “wise” critics here would have been shouting Bravo! Now simply because its a Nigerian thing, people who do not know how to put thread in the eye of a needle have all come out to bad mouth the thing not give constructive criticism. Written by 22 year-old African actress and filmmaker Sahndra Fon Dufe, ‘Yefon’ is the story of a young woman who defies her village’s customs to learn how to read and become educated only to face a death sentence as a result.
Inspired by women around the world who have faced similar circumstances, Ms. Fon Dufe and her production team have pledged to use a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the film, companion documentary, books and related merchandise to build an all-girls’ school in Nso, the village in Cameroon where Yefon’s story takes place.

Mai I think the main flaw of this bride’s outfit is that it wasn’t fitted to the model. Looks like it was intended for someone else but this Muna chic ended up getting the gig and a last minute fitting was attempted. The concept is good and would look stunning if only it was the right fit.
