President Goodluck Jonathan’s Trip to Brazil amidst Violence in Kaduna & Yobe sparks Public Outrage

The violent killings in Kaduna and Yobe states on Sunday and Tuesday where the death toll has risen to 99 has put the country in a sad mood. In Kaduna, about 74 people were reportedly killed in church bombings and reprisal attacks on Sunday and Monday while on Tuesday, 25 people were killed in violent attacks in Yobe.

However, amidst the violence, mourning, and calls for improved security, President Goodluck Jonathan travelled to Brazil on Monday to take part in a United Nations’ Earth Summit, leaving behind killings in Kaduna and Yobe.

His action has sparked up outrage in the country as most people feel he should have stayed behind to attend to the pressing security matters rather than jetting off to Brazil for the UN summit.

Opposition parties and other eminent citizens have described his trip as disappointing.

The House of Representatives also said the President could have delegated the trip to Vice-President Namadi Sambo or any of his senior aides since the trip was “not special or of economic interest.”

The spokesman for the House, Zakari Mohammed said, “A trip like that could have been delegated by Mr. President so that he can stay at home to take charge of security. We know that security agencies are supposed to do their job, but we cannot afford to compromise security. If our security is compromised, it is a failure of governance.”

Mohammed added that investors would not come to Nigeria if the country was not safe.

The Action Congress of Nigeria, in a statement by his National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, faulted Jonathan’s journey amidst what it described as a “national tragedy.”

It described the President’s decision to travel “two days after innocent Nigerians, including women and children, were killed as a sign of insensitive and confused leadership.”

The Congress for Progressive Change also faulted the President, saying it was wrong for him to leave the country at the moment. It said the President’s trip was disappointing. According to the National Publicity Secretary of the Party, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, Jonathan ought to put off his scheduled travel because of the crises in the country.

“There is a dire security challenge in the nation. The President promised the nation that Boko Haram insurgency shall end in June. But with the recent escalation of the problem, that promise of Mr. President appears to be of no effect.”

What do you think about the President’s trip to Brazil at a time when Nigeria is facing such crisis? Do you think he should have delegated someone else to represent him at the summit?

Please share your thoughts.

Only in Naija!! Using the UN summit as a holiday to escape his responsibilities!!

  • Ajiboye Oluwatumininu Peters June 20, 2012 at 10:40 am

Lets be sincere here,we have no president he’s rather a principal. We’ll only be prayerful & watchful because it’s getting to a stage that people are more confused on what precisely the ‘Boko Haram’ wanted.
As a sign of leadership,he should have stayed back in the country & address the issue which can’t be resolve.Nigerians wants action, not faded promises.

    God bless Nigeria.

GoodLuck please come back home we are in trouble

  • Aminawon June 20, 2012 at 10:54 am

Not surprising at all. A trip to the Brazil?? (mtchewwww..)

  • Kwalemon June 20, 2012 at 11:01 am

What are the state Governors & Police Comissoners doing about it in these states? Yaradua was ill for six months & there was peace, because people were looting public funds, now those areas have been blocked by the present administration. People should take full responsibility of their states & leave the President alone! Lets face the fact, WE ARE OUR OWN ENEMIES

    • Miss Fab June 20, 2012 at 11:44 am

Which areas have been blocked and by whom? What happened between Otedola and Farouk? Wasnt a police IG murdered 2weeks ago?
Wasnt a seniour security chief reported dead (murder) today?msthchew ….. What are you talking about?
Abeg Goodluck needs to come back home, sit down and strategise on how best to tackle this pressing problem rather than going about for ”EARTH’ summit or giving press release saying things are under control when they are not. Is he waiting for the issue to escalate and perhaps spread to the south and west before he does the right thing?

    • purplepearl June 20, 2012 at 12:15 pm

      You are on point!!!

  • happychiq June 20, 2012 at 11:07 am

I miss Obasanjo! Can he contest again?

    • Lola June 20, 2012 at 12:16 pm

Hmmmm……i didn’t want to say the very same thing, before my nose gets bitten off. I MISS OBJ!!! He’d have tackled this issue by now (violently i’d admit) and Boko haram would be a thing of the distant past!

  • Soraya June 20, 2012 at 12:11 pm

Well, I don’t think his presence would have made much of a difference- he has not been dealing with the Boko Haram issue effectively- perhaps David Mark or any other ex-military officer in the senate would have been in a better position to deal with Boko Haram but the trouble is Jonathan is surrounded by his Bayelsa mafia who are robbing us blind! Boko Haram would not have had the nerve to strike if someone like Obasanjo or a military man was in power because the only language these military people understand is eye for eye, fire for fire!!! Maybe we should scrap democracy and return to military rule- it is no longer enough just to declare a state of emergency- I noticed BH have taken their eyes off Plateau now that Gov Jang and his people are dealing with them there!

    • ozi June 20, 2012 at 12:39 pm

Never heard so much tripe in my life.
So u are not aware the whole boko haram issue is going on because a non hausa or yoruba is president. Was it not Obasanjo who directed soldiers to clear out an entire village (Odi) in the niger delta and got away?
Are u not also aware of the electricity scam during obasanjo’s regime?
Instaed of calling the north and its political leaders to order, u lot have chosen to point accusing fingers to the president.

      • Soraya June 20, 2012 at 10:04 pm

My dear Ozi, I think you should go back and learn your history again- the Boko Haram thing actually started when Yar’adua was president- it just metamorphosed into a war against Christians after their leader was killed by the Yar’adua government. The government and state governor in Borno have failed to get down to the root of why Boko Haram emerged in the first place. It does not help either that our laws are very weak at dealing with all sort of crisis, so these criminals try their luck over and over again.

as for me there is nothing like islamic set all I know is that Jonathan and his develish members are responsible for all this bombig in nigeria. pls can any one tell me what realy have they been doing with those terrorists theyve been arresting or is it that there is no arrest. since the fool have been in this possition all he do is to look for a way of shearding blood he either remove subsidy and take some blood or renamed school and get his blood or resign some people and get his blood. he have never in his life think of doing anything good all he do is to create way of geting his blood. may the course of Allah be on him for using islamic name for his evel act

  • EMEGHAJOSEPH June 20, 2012 at 12:50 pm

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE, WHAT CAN HIS PRESENSE DO TO ADYING NATION. OUR PRESIDO IS INACTIVE. MAY BE NEXT TIME , GOD MIGHT GIVE US SOMEBODY WHO WILL BE ABLE TO BRING THE BEST IN NIGERIANS. THIS ONE IS ADISAPPONTMENT. HE SHOULD GO BACK TO UNIPORT WHERE HE BELONGED. ONE DAY, BOKO HARAM WILL SEE HER EQUALL. FOR NOW, GOODNIGHT NAIJA.

  • efe June 20, 2012 at 1:13 pm

What earth summit is he going for,Nigeria is His own earth which he should see to,and not running off to Brazil, cos he is not wanting to own up that he is just so confused and not a true leader ,cos leadership is fatherhood which means he would have stayed back to take care of His own earth,Home,Nigeria.Mshewwwww

  • kendra Zuhair June 20, 2012 at 1:21 pm

He is free to fly! His presence aint making a difference anyway!

  • Salisu Adali June 20, 2012 at 1:22 pm

Jonathan has tarnished the image of this country

  • ohyeah June 20, 2012 at 1:42 pm

come back and do what exactly? set up road blocks, give a speech or declare state of emergency? there isnt an easy or quick fix! any solution will involve hefty funding, appropriate structuring of the police force (including implementation of IT, procedures, training of personel, building infrastructures), Tightening up boarders and controlling immigration (know who is coming in and going out). unfortunately the government will not pursue this goal because the funds have been embezzeled and they do not have a sense of responsiblility to solving the issue. giving curfew and setting up road blocks is frankly speaking is a daft and ineffective way of helping the issue. Nigerians must accept this people in government do not share in any shape or form your thinking about the needs of the nation! I have seen governement officials owning million pound properties in north london and going on luxury holiday. Nigeria will be a better country but NOT in our time, not in the next hundreds of years to come. things are only going to get worse before they become better.

  • Abodunrin Caleb June 20, 2012 at 1:57 pm

All this wouldn’t have happen if my brother Donald Duke was president. That guy is a Mafia Don and would have silently eliminated their sponsors.. World class chess player!! A pity we are stuck with a clueless and strategy less president. Msstcheeeew

  • jay June 20, 2012 at 2:25 pm

please we need to pray seriously for this country.in your own little way your prayers can move mountains.BH will be a thing of the past..

  • Sidney June 20, 2012 at 2:30 pm

Jonathan is a bombaclat!! Why are people expecting his presence to be of any significance? Wasn’t it the same Ebele that said the bombing/ Boko Haram is something we have to live with? The only time the thing, we call president, showed a little bit of concern was during the Dana plane crash. Remember those fake tears?
The only time we hear from this n*gga is when he gives his embarrassing speeches. He is useless and a coward as far as am concerned. He is the current face of Aso Rock! lol. Nigerians don’t need to wait for him! If only we understood the power in unity. There is power in coming together regardless of our diversity! We are just selfish abi greedy! A lot of us don’t really want change for the country but only for ourselves and family. Nigeria cannot move forward like this.

  • Sidney June 20, 2012 at 2:48 pm

To the person who said pray and be watchful, that is the typical Nigerian mentality and it is that same mentality that has gotten us nowhere. What are you being watchful of?That ideology pisses me off! Too much prayer and no action! Yet you want to enjoy a better Nigeria. God will not make you pass your exam or grow in your business if you don’t put in work. Since you are religious, Im sure youve heard this common saying
“do your best and leave the rest to God”. Follow that and put an end to that lazy mentality of praying and “looking”!

    • QJ June 20, 2012 at 5:20 pm

Well said, Sid. Prayer is good but these days pple are using praying as an excuse for laziness.

  • Sandy June 20, 2012 at 3:12 pm

I agree with Kwalemon on the fact that we are our own enemies. Goodluck cannot do things all by himself, where are the governors of those states that are being attacked as well. Governors are in closer proximity with the occurrence and should also get some of the inefficiency blames. Jonathan has his faults, but everyone must work together for a better Nigeria.

  • princess mimi June 20, 2012 at 5:47 pm

He hasnt done nything about it sine he ascended to power. Travelling doesnt impair his non ability to perform. it just shows that there is no sense of indebtedness to the electorate. I honestly dont know what is next for my beloved nigeria *sigh*. God for us all.

  • princess mimi June 20, 2012 at 5:51 pm

Pray for Nigeria Pray for Nigeria. Why are people always carrying this prayer matter on their head. This is an issue of action to eradicate a problem. I am a strong believer in the power of prayer and the possibilities abound when u walk with God. but please let not deceive ourselves. @sidney was spot on in his comments.

  • bsafa June 20, 2012 at 9:07 pm

I think he was a badluck when his mother gave birth to him and they decided to name him the opposite< sometimes names and family generational spell matters am afraid something is not right and is affecting the Nation at large<

  • faith June 20, 2012 at 9:12 pm

    gbam!!!thank u very much princess mimi….

  • NNENNE June 21, 2012 at 5:02 am

The president can not do every single job by himself. What happened to division of labor?
The local government chairmen, governors, legislators etc, need to do their job and report to the president. Today, the world is a global village.(thanks to technology).
GEJ can be away and still check and give directives to the aforementioned on what to do.
As for those wishing ObJ to be back, was he not there when sharia court was formed? What did he do,when it was against Nigerian constitution to do so.ObJ is not squeaky clean, too.
If sharia court was nipped at the bud, BH would not have risen!

  • Joseph Tom June 21, 2012 at 7:59 am

let him go-to-hell nd burn his freaking, smelling, irresponsible ass for all i care…his presence hadnt made any difference so y should his absense >damg<

  • Lola June 21, 2012 at 11:50 am

We know his presence wont mean s**t but @least,let him pretend that he is a leader by staying back as a symbol of his care and concern.but even that is too much 4jona!
