Federal Government Announces Plans to Reintroduce Toll Gates on ALL Federal Roads

The Chairman of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency, Ezekiel Adeniji, has said that the Federal Government will soon reintroduce tollgates to federal roads across the country.
Tollgates were scrapped by former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo during his tenure. However, since his exit in 2007, there has been reports that the government was considering the return of tollgates to federal roads. This is likely especially as some states like Lagos have successfully introduced such on their roads.
The FERMA boss also said the agency would recruit 10,000 Nigerians from communities where it would be engaged in major road maintenance work before the end of the year.
In an interview with Economic Confidential, Adeniji did not give a specific date for the reintroduction of tollgates, but he said that tolling is for revenue generation and job creation.
“In developed countries, there is no place you go to that you don’t pay toll for the roads you use.
“If you are paying for water, electricity and communication, why can’t you pay for good roads? Tolling is universal. But the government that scrapped the tolling knows the reason why they scrapped it, and we also have reasons why we want to return it. It is as simple as that.
“Because when you toll, you get more revenue, you create more jobs and you have funds to maintain the roads.”
What do you think about his statement? Would it be wise to reintroduce tolling on all Federal roads in the country? Do you agree that reintroducing tolling on the roads would create more funds to maintain the roads?
Please share your thoughts.

Tollgates are fine as long as the roads are fixed and security in reinstated on the roads. Anything less than that is unacceptable!
My thoughts exactly. Don’t forget maintenance though. It’s not enough for the roads to be fixed up, but they need regularly scheduled maintenance.
Very true!

Interesting.
its not a bad idea ,i hope it works before we know another story would come up.
A simple question I just wanna ask is the relevance of tax with all other introduction of levies!
When will Federal Government announce plans to FIX ALL FEDERAL ROADS? The way our leaders act sometimes, I doubt if they actually live in this country with us.
Toll gate will aid security esp to travellers.
Things never work as they should in Nigeria. Ideally, tolling the roads should make more funds available for health and/or education but in this case the budgetary allocation for federal roads will become available for transfers to the bank accounts of the few incompetent thugs who are currently misruling Nigeria
toll gates=fees……… our govt just provide us with social amenities and jobs abeg
If the improve upon the state of the roads in terms of security and maintenance, it should be fine! A good way to provide jobs but they need to ensure they have the logistics in place.

Toll gates are fine. But implementation is very crucial. Spending 45mins at a gate, simply so you can pay toll would just be ludicrous. Also, a very important question is where will the money go?

All developed countries have electricity 24/7 why don’t you follow that example?
Well said!
“But the government that scrapped the tolling knows the reason why they scrapped it, and we also have reasons why we want to return it. It is as simple as that”. …………..smh such a daft comment!!!!! the people in government need to know how to give speech or give the right answers to simple questions……..even our dear presido too lacks this!!!!!!!
“In developed countries, there is no place you go to that you don’t pay toll for the roads you use” Fix the roads first and make them motorable, let our road networks match the standard of those in developed countries before talking about tolls. Nigerian leaders – always putting the cart before the horse.
Well said @Tee. The president and its carbinet hv a problem wit answering simple questions directly. OBJ scap the toll gate bcos money was never remitted to the govt.
Are they also going to reintroduce roads? ‘Cause we don’t have them.
Buh wull that change d price if garri to 10kobo a cup? What a confused govt. Somone shld ple whisper to his ear to channel that energy and resource to the insecurity probelms of BHs. Our problem no be Road for now na SECURITY.
It is good to have two roads system. Government free roads and private speedway with toll
