BN Bytes: Chidinma’s Style Metamorphosis in Photos! Sweet Girl → Tough Chick → Ecclectic Diva

Chidinma – Before & After

We met Chidinma Ekile in 2010 when she won emerged as the winner of MTN Project Fame Season 3.
The young vocalist has seen her profile rise since then especially with the release of her most successful single till date “Kedike“.

While her red carpet style has stayed safely in the “ankara” zone, Chidinma’s style profile via her promotional photos and videos has been shifting steadily over the last two years.

Check on it.

The Sweet Girl
It started with the sweetheart look. Wavy hair, babydoll dresses and a pretty smile.

The Tough Chick
The smile was replaced by a cheeky smirk, sunglasses and an array of nerd glasses were essential style items for Chidinma at this point. Sexier dresses, tank tops paired with jeans accessorized with sturdy jewellry completed her looks.

The Ecclectic Diva
Hair chopped off to reveal fresh crop which totally accentuates her delicate features. Contemporary pieces infused with ankara detailing define these looks. Let’s not forget the leather!

So which of Chidinma’s style stages are you loving?

  • Mgbeke Explained!! November 2, 2012 at 3:04 pm

mgbeke is a village girl with natural beauty that doesnt need makeup to be beautiful, its a combination of agbor- ibo word for young woman, and eke- which is python and in many igbo cultures the eke is the messenger of ala- the mother earth and the beauty of the eke’s skin is natural, and it can also mean a young girl born on eke market day- eke again meaning python. Its nothing bad, its just that when ajebutters or kids who their family have money want to make fun of someone who lacks city makeover..ex. fake hair, nails, makeup, they use the term to associate to them. Most people who truly dont know the meaning use it to make fun of people when in actuality its an indirect praise, especially in this day and age when most of the things we see on girls today are fake, and mgbeke would always retain her natural undiluted simplicity and beauty. It was never meant to be mean spirited word, but as you know words regardless of its original meaning, words can and have been used in a derogatory manner. I personally think chidi is very beautiful and i love her afrocentric mgbeke style, cuz it truly emphasizes her natural beauty.

its a combination or mgbede or agbor, depending of what part of ibo land you are coming from and eke.
Mgbede is a traditional beauty pagent or coming into society that igbo women traditionally do to introduce a younce woman into society. So it can also be interpreted as mgbede eke, or simply mgbeke- again the combination of works are different depending on the igbo dialect spoken. But the mgbeke is not originally a bad word. — the full name is usually nwanyi mgbeke -explanation courtsey of my igbo grandmother of amorje ukpakiri- ala ngwa-abia state. :)

i wld rather be an mgbeke any day rather than a fake woman. i have ebony skin, natural hair whc i make into threads or didi. that dsnt mean d brazilian weave lady is less of a woman. if she feels cmftbl in that fine. Chidinma is fresh and fun and i loved her looks in her kedike vid. she shld stick to natural looks. just my own one kobo.

Mgbeke explained’s analysis get as e be sha (the whole ‘mgbeke etymology’ thingy is probably only relative to his ‘Ngwa’ people of abia state like he said :-)). In fact, I had to phone a friend about this mgbeke issue (haha, I know I’m not on a ‘hot seat’ :-)). My dear friend (who by the way, is a Professor of English language & AFRICAN/Comparative literature with a major in Igbo culture), told me inter alia (among other things), that mgbeke in ancient times was a widely used form of address (not derogatory then) for a well-known OLD woman (usually born on an ‘eke’ market day)…Let me just spare u guys all the details from him, cos If I don’t, I might just end up publishing an award-winning article here on a bella naija comment box. Lol.

Kem above couldn’t have been more succinct & spot on by summarizing an ‘mgbeke’ as a ‘local champion’; A ‘local beauty champion’ that is!
Contemporarily & in more elaborate terms, ‘mgbeke’ simply describes a village girl who is locally pretty (in her small world), but ‘tries so hard’ in the city to keep/show off her beauty. In other words, It derogatively describes a girl who is ‘trying so hard’ to be pretty in a world of so many effortlessly pretty girls. In fact, the full word is ‘MGBEKE PUTARA TOWN’! Meaning ‘MGBEKE THAT CAME TO TOWN’! This tells us that the word mgbeke is most often than not linked to the word village. (A true Igbo Nigerian should be feeling me right now) :-)
Chidinma is not an mgbeke IMHO. I think she’s effortlessly pretty, or like Chimamanda Adichie would say, ‘illogically Pretty’. Rant Over. :-D

Sommie- you have said it all. Modern meaning of Mbgeke.

  • Amber November 2, 2012 at 9:13 pm

  • too brief, the kind u can put in ur pocket November 2, 2012 at 10:43 pm

But she is wearing fake lashes, fake hair, makeup and all wat not.I luv her track Jagolo more…

  • Syndey November 3, 2012 at 12:21 am

    she’s so adorable!

  • NNENNE November 3, 2012 at 2:00 am

In my part of Igbo land,MGBEKE, means “on eke day”.Meaning the individual is born on a eke day. Eke is a name of a market day.It is just like naming someone “Friday”.
No one gives their child such names these days. Calling someone MGBEKE is like calling them old fashioned, unpolished.

  • Bella November 5, 2012 at 9:40 am

She’s pretty and i admire her.

  • Chum chum November 7, 2012 at 1:26 pm

Hmmmm @Sommie well explained @Mgbeke Explained you need to do more research on the EKE thing, there two types of EKE in igbo language. EKE=Python and EKE= mkt day and this eke mkt has a hyphen on top of it when writing and that is how it is pronounces it does mean python at all. Chidinma is pretty Mgbeke or not.
