Now we wake up with not care in the world, but there was a time when all we thought about was “will it be me next?”

Now we walk past our neighbours, shake hands and hug them with no fearful thought skittering through our minds, but there was a time when we dared not shake the hands of our trusted friends and allies for fear of sweat on their palms or their clothes.

Now we can afford to forget to walk out of the sparkling bathroom, but there was a time when not only did we douse our hands with hand sanitiser after washing them vigorously with anti-bacterial handwash, we also doused the toilet seats with as much Izal and Dettol as we could stand.

Now we brush shoulders with a passerby mistakenly and stop to lightly tap them on the arm to apologise, but there was a time when an accidental brushing of shoulders led to a hasty retreat and speedy entry into the shower once one got home.

Now there are several abandoned bottles of hand sanitisers, but there was a time when they were the scarcest commodity around and a shipment of 1,000 made one an instant millionaire.

Now we can cuddle with our loved ones, exchange heated kisses and touch endearingly , but there was a time (and no one can deny this) when the kiss and touch of a dear one was the cause of a very slight tremor.

Now there are so many who are sick and are gently catered for in the hospitals, but there was a time when a slight sickness made you instantly calculate how many days before the Ebola virus is full blown and how soon you’d have to be quarantined if the fever did not subside.

Now we walk into public places unheeded, touching the open sesame buttons and exchanging cards, but there was a time when a temperature search and public hand sanitiser dispensers were a must.

Now we walk around, smile, sneeze, shake hands, hold hands, kiss, love, eat, and share with not a care in this world…

Make this permanent, join the fight against Ebola, send Stop Ebola to 7979 on your MTN line and donate to this worthy cause.
