Technology oh technology! How lovely art thou!

We can all say without a doubt that technology is a beautiful thing. Things seem to be quicker and better. I remember the pre-mobile phone era. How did we really survive? When NITEL seemingly held each home to ransom! Today we are the children of the Blackberry or should I say Crackberry! You can browse the internet, make calls, chat, send text messages, pictures and video recordings all from one device. It’s all really fascinating when you think how far we’ve come!

But with everything good, there is always the bad. There is something about the facelessness of technology that makes us all somewhat bolder. We are able to flirt and say things via messages that we wouldn’t normally say face to face. Any comment made via black berry messenger accompanied with a smiley or “LOL” can take all forms of meaning. But even more seriously, we all seem to leave our senses behind when it comes to sharing certain forms of information via these technological sources. We don’t have to look too far to see how technology has damaged relationships, I am sure Tiger Woods will never leave a voice message for anyone in his lifetime! But if I am honest I am less worried about the impact of technology on men as I am about women, because as usual, in most cases, we seem to take the brunt of it all.

A good friend of mine recently called me in tears. She woke me up at 4am and I could barely hear what she was saying. At first I thought someone had died and I shot up from bed with a jolt, pleading with her to calm down and tell me exactly what had happened. Her story was pitiful. Her relationship was in ruins. In fact ruins might be an understatement. Her boyfriend of 5years had just dumped her. His reason? He had seen naked pictures of her on another guy’s phone! Shikenah! He didn’t want to hear any explanation, no excuses. He was done. In fact my friend was calling me from the gate of his house because he had just thrown her out, despite her pleading. When she finally got to mine and had calmed down a bit. I got up my courage to ask her what naked pictures of her were doing on another guy’s phone. She explained that she and her boyfriend had been on a break about a year ago and she had sent these pictures to this guy who she was flirting with at the time. When she and her boyfriend finally got back together, she forgot all about the guy. Unfortunately he hadn’t. Apparently, the guy is a ‘collector’ of such pictures and once in a while shows of his ‘art’ to friends. One of his friends being my friend’s boyfriend.

Another friend’s distant relative also got a rude awakening, when a sex recording she had produced with a guy started making the rounds on her classmates blackberrys. Apparently the guys in her university were fed up with her pretentious attitude and decided to teach her a lesson. All very very sad!

Now I am not a kill joy. I realize this is the global age and everybody wants to experiment. But even scientists wear protective clothing when conducting experiments. So we must all be careful! Although as with all advice, abstaining from such activity is usually the best way to prevent any of the above from happening to you, I understand that this option is not always possible. But it is important that you weight the pros and cons of every decision. Personally, I believe in this case, the cons definitely outweigh any perceived advantages. The embarrassment that could follow, in my opinion, far surpass any momentary thrill one could hope to enjoy.  Even if you trust your boyfriend or significant other, what if someone steals his phone or he sends it for repairs? However, if after all of the above you still decide to indulge yourself, please be smart and careful! The last thing any sensible woman wants is embarrassing pictures of her floating around the internet for all eternity!

    Never Say Never
Anyone could be a victim of such…….
Speaking from experience? The best advise is to simply abstain…..

  • Tili August 31, 2010 at 3:14 pm

This is well written. We are now so free to expose ourselves on varoius social media and only God knows where these picture end up.

But it’s not only social media, I went to a friends wedding some months ago and a guy was taking pictures of me on his blackberry without me knowing. Only God know whether he went round the city cliaming that I was his girlfriend – but I was so shocked to hear that he had pictures of me on his phone. na wa o!

True talk! Meanwhile I’ve noticed (and I really did take my time to notice this) that for a while, those who write “first to comment” are no longer first to comment and I think this is deliberate. I’m not complaining or anything, I’m just stating my observation. Shalom.

So true…..there is no harm in flirting but sending naked pictures is going too far.

  • Molicious August 31, 2010 at 6:32 pm

It is difficult to understand what you write when it is so full of shorthand! What is the need to comment when one cannot decipher what you are writing? I tire for lazy people who cannot write, abi type, properly!

  • u dont lose what you never had September 2, 2010 at 4:04 pm

    good for u

  • jennietobbie September 5, 2010 at 6:13 am

Lord bless my soul…but this ish aint gonna happen to me. I have to be full-blown insane! No matter how much I love you, I am not gonna take a nude picture of myself! Abeeg with all this “never say never rubbish.” I’m saying it now NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Rimzy September 6, 2010 at 5:50 am

The whole sexting thing is not that big of a deal for me, what bothers me is people who are in relationships and then make a sex tape. hmm, when yawa is a gas! wahala go dey o. The only people that are allowed to be nude, and it is completely legal are porn-stars! It is their job! If you are just an ordinary person, this is the inter-webs, it will come out. If it happened to Waaaanddeee Coooaaaal it will happen to you.

  • niger-delta militant October 30, 2010 at 7:40 pm

That is how debased the society has become espacially our young girls who want to own blackberry of N60,000 when they are not working

  • Mariamah November 2, 2010 at 5:46 pm

    True talk

  • who are you and why do you want to see me naked? November 13, 2010 at 10:36 am

This just confirms my thoughts. I always wonder why guys think they can ask me to send them a naked picture of myself! Who are you? We are not even dating and I find it very disrespectful… if someone I just *chat* with who has no respect for me is asking for a pic and i send it to him in my stupidity.. ofcourse I can’t blame anyone where it ends out.. plus even boyfriends…… I remember the ex-es (key word here ex-es) and their numerous pleas for naked pictures… and I am so happy i did not cave in.. I cannot while nursing a heartbreak be trying to remember who has a copy of my dignity in their inbox or on their phone.

  • Amy March 23, 2012 at 4:26 pm

It can be so annoying these days when you just added a new contact and the next thing he’s asking is ur naked pictures……duuh who do you think I am? For me such is enough reason to delete him from my contact cos it means he doesn’t want much from me. I’ve had guys send me their naked pics so as to convince me to send mine and I lmao cos nothing in the world will make me send my naked pics. Hoow, whhhhhhhy? Maka why, oloun maje. I think some guys are just perverts and from their fruits you will know them so gals watch out. No guy would want to marry you and ask you to send your naked pics
