“Vintage Love”: Jewel By Lisa S/S 12 Collection- The Lookbook

For her Spring /Summer 2012 collection, Africa Fashion International Designer of the year winner, Lisa Folawiyo takes us on a voyage back to Nigeria in the 60’s; a time characterized by independence and growth, a time of change and promise. With the emergence of great novelists Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka and the development of musical genres high-life and afro-beat with the masters Victor Uwaifo and Fela Kuti danced and swayed to at soirees; a time when modern architectural influences paved new streets – “Vintage Love” revisits this past, celebrating heritage and culture, as it reworks and reinterprets traditional Nigerian menswear and key pieces within that era into modern female silhouettes.

I actually like the designs, but I love the fabrics better. My only thing with naija designers is that their clothes are so pricey. Someone should come up with an affordable line for the rest of us lol

      November 22, 2011 at 8:39 pm

sorry love the fabrics more (detecting my own gbagaun lol)

So you watched the video, saw the kind of level they’re on (NY Fashion Week and interview with Vogue Italia) and you’re still complaining that they’re over-priced?? My dear please accept they are not designing for you ehn.. Not yet at least. When you make your money you no go complain

    • Chi-ka

      November 23, 2011 at 2:41 pm

@Passerby. I was referring to naija designers in general. Gosh, negative people! Make a straight comment that is not directed at others. Notice the end of my comment that referes to “…the rest of us…”. Read, lady, read! Thank you!
@Joy, let us know here when you do o. It’ll be worth it. 🙂

LOL i feel you on naija stuff being pricey. I only know few sellers & designers that carry anything under 15k/ bout $100.

Anyways OMG this lookbook is LOVELY!!!!! she’s so talented, I wish I could add it all to my closet. LMAO @ the comment saying if you cant afford it, it’s not for you. ppl got jokes. I wonder how much her stuff is, it can’t be that bad, right?

Initially I was like hmmmm, but when I watched the video, I really did get the idea behind the collection, it surely helped. JBL, I like the fact that she is pushing and working hard but still there is ….. ok lets simply say plenty of room for improvement. keep moving

This is a beautiful collection. I literally love everything but I especially love the guipure lace ‘agbada and sokoto’ (complete with fila), this look is a perfect example of ‘African androgyny’. The lace is demure and feminine whilst the pieces themselves borrow inspiration from traditional masculine tailoring. As much as I love all the adrogynous slim fit pant suits doing the rounds, this look is it, it’s fresh, it’s vibrant and most importantly, it’s African and I love it.

She and her team work really hard. I love her brand. She is showing us that Nigerian fashion isn’t all about event costumes/ impracticality but that it can be realistic and relatable. It doesn’t just celebrate occasions but celebrates our daily lives as humans. Well done Lisa F.

*sigh*damn that colonial mentality and inferiority complex!
I love jewel by lisa, but please there’s nothing “unrealistic” or “impractical ” about a normal agabda, iro and buba, akwaete and blouse or ishiagwu, booboo etc. they are just as beautiful.

    November 23, 2011 at 12:13 pm

JBL continues to impress me. she makes the most exquisite clothes come out looking simple and FAB so you decide if you want to dress it up or down. Wish i could afford them though. she needs to start a line that is not more than N30k so people like us can also save up and buy.

Lisa has been doing very good work. The real talent is Banke Kuku who makes the majority of her fabrics. If there are any fabrics you like, chances are Banke Kuku made it.
