BN Bytes: Mere Clash of Egos? | Nigezie E-Xtra Gives Us The Scoop on Mode Nine’s & Muna’s Falling Out At the Nokia “Don’t Break The Beat” Rap Battle

It appears that Muna and Mode Nine; host and judge respectively of the Nokia “Don’t Break The Beat” Rap Battle; had an exchange of words at the grand finale event on Saturday, April 28th at GET Arena, Lagos. Was it a mere clash of egos? Or was there disrespect involved coming from one side. What do you think? Nigezie E-Xtra gives us all the details.

Check on it.

Muna shouldn’t have said that at all, imagine sayn no i don’t agree in front of all those people. it’s not in her place at all as per compere and not a judge. She should learn from Adora Oleh and Joseph benjamin. Didn’t know she is this disrespectful. Slow your role ma’am.

  6. prettygirlglam

    May 9, 2012 at 10:56 am

A judge is a judge and a host is a host, you don’t have to agree with them and your opinion don’t count, that’s why you are the host.

  7. Des

    May 9, 2012 at 11:04 am

What Muna did was jus nonsense. If her opinion counted, they would have made her a judge instead of the hostess. Thats wat happens when peeps start growing big heads for lil success.

Muna was soooo wrong on all counts! A Judges decision is final!! And she kept on saying, “but I do have a say, you know” I mean! That wasn’t only rude, it was DISRESPECTFUL!! My word!! I like the fact the DJ Jimmy Jatt kept it real and said it as it was…. MUNA abeg, know your place at all times! A host is a host and a judge is a judge. Sheesh!

I’m more worried about her accent. Where do these girls learn these weird accents from? Is it from the Island/Lekki axis?

  13. babajide

    May 9, 2012 at 11:39 am

THis girl just disappointed me. Abi she doesnt know this is africa, and not usa, respect your elders. Seondly she is wrong, as a host, her opinion doesnt count, that is why there are judges. Thirdly, I feel that she has just used her hand to ruin her career both in music and television, for when pride goes first, failure follows. And what the hell is with the fake American accent, girl please, speak normal jare. Her disrespect made her ugly to me,making her beauty worthless.

  14. seun

    May 9, 2012 at 11:42 am

this girl no try at all, respect is part of our cultures no matter the tribe. She just made herself ugly in front of everyone, future employers included. I am surprised that such attitude could come out of such a beauty, cuz it made fugly to me for the first time.

I feel like this two had a romantic relationship that went sour. As for Muna, very sad, very disrespectful on her side. If they wanted her as a judge then she would have been, she is just a mere host.

  24. Gemma

    May 9, 2012 at 1:15 pm

With all the anti-Muna rants on Twitter, I actually thought did something much worse. She may have been wrong for opposing a judge’s decision openly, but the huge backlash and insults are overboard. This is what living in a patriarchal society does to people. If a male host had disagreed with a male judge’s opinion openly, would the backlash have been this intense? I think not. Some of the comments here are far from objective, they just stink of spite and brittle envy.
Mode 9 isn’t entirely blameless. He didn’t have to talk back and try to assert his said experience and superiority.
And to the Mode 9 voltrons on Twitter and elsewhere, show your boy some love. Don’t get your knickers all up in a twist today because Muna “insulted” him; then conveniently forget about him tomorrow. Buy his albums. Buy tickets for his shows so his earnings can match his undeniable talent. That’s the kind of support he needs.

    • passing through

      May 9, 2012 at 1:34 pm

Gemma, if that’s your idea of damage control, it is an epic fail! What does a patriarchal society have to do with anything…mtchew! I’m a lady and my idea of equality is not being babied, if i deserve to be criticized then bring it on, don’t pity me cause I’m a woman, biko that’s sexist and the height of male chauvinism if you ask me. On your if this was a male judge would this have happened? Gurrl please, the backlash would have been worse, by now Mode9 would have released a diss song…lol. Please no bring gender into the story at all…real women don’t need unnecessary pity party!

    • Makema

      May 10, 2012 at 7:45 am

It’s not about being babied… Naija people, specifically women are harsher on women for crimes against men. Most of the backlash is from women and I’m sure there’s an underlying tone because Muna is female. If it were Olamide or Vector now, everyone will turn a blind eye. She wasn’t rude at first, just inappropriate but Modenine was so aggressive. And Gemma is right, ‘Buy his albums and stop shouting respect”..

    • Birthwrite

      May 10, 2012 at 11:19 am

i like. so straight to the point and true. women should not be classified for no reason. if you are wrong then take the heat and adjust to the beat. Demmie More did in G.I Jane and she triumphed.

      May 9, 2012 at 5:12 pm

Really? You are either Muna or must be worse than her when it comes to being unprofessional and Rude. What she did is very rash and very unladylike. Imagine her displaying her lack of decorum and manners…pass the mic mehn..pass the mic… with her fake accent! A judge aired his opinion and she as a host started countering his judgement in the presence of the contestants, audience and all. Does she want to cause commotion in there? Women like her will openly bruise their husbands ego in public by disagreeing and openly argue with them in the presence of people! Madam PASS THE MIC MEHN!!!

    • mimi

Oh my!Thank you so much Gemma. When i heard of the so called ‘altercation’, i was expecting much worse.I thought maybe she slapped him, called him a bastard or peraps an irrelevant ‘has been’ artiste. Then i watched the video and i was like, is this why people are giving themselves cardiac arrest? Most of these competitions, the hosts usually are encouraged to give their opinion just to spice things up. Mode 9 was the first one to be belligerent. He wanted to be upset over her comment because he choose to.Like Gemma said, if it was a guy, he would not have reacted in that same manner. Please he should pass the mic and have several seats and then he should strategize on how to move his career forward.

Well, i had to watch the video like 3 times to form an objective opinion. Granted, Muna was wrong with her comment, ( i think there is something personal between them, hut i will say Mode9 went really overboard, he really went berserk. I heard Muna chuckle, perhaps trying to diffuse the tension ( from whatever prior issues they have, i think) but Mode9 was really brash. I am no music fan and care little for either Muna or Mode9, lets call a spage a spade, Muna was wrong and Mode9 was very rude. Simples

Dzeani why don’t u put urself in Mode 9 shoes before saying he went overboard and berserk. This guy is far older than Muna for crying out loud and she out-rightly embarrassed him by saying pass the mic..pass the mic. What Muna did to Mode 9 was not only disrespectful but annoying. Imagine her insulting him by telling him repeatedly to pass the mic..pass the mic. If Mode 9 were to be a woman it would have been worse for Muna, cos she would have taken it further than Mode 9.

    • mimi

      May 9, 2012 at 8:14 pm

LOL and I thought he was a ‘woman’. Kmt mode9 should growup. I dunno what your notion is about women but i could never embarrass myself the way mode9 just did. Agreed muna shouldnt have kept saying pass d mic but d guy too talk sef!

    • Jiddah

      May 10, 2012 at 12:19 am

Yeah, the way she kept saying the ‘pass the mic, pass the mic’ made it seem like she was talking to a dull child. She was wrong on all accounts. If Uncle Mode had kept quiet it would have been weird, ‘the pass the mic made him snatch it and snap back at her. She’s uncouth!

  40. Tunde

    1. She was disrespectful/rude and unprofessional! According to the rule, as the host of the event, she definitely has no right to take side no matter the differences she has with Mode 9. 2. Coming from a former Miss. Nigeria, she’s not well represented what if she wasn’t favored by the judges?

  41. Jess

    May 9, 2012 at 3:55 pm

Seriously? It’s like Ryan Seacrest arguing with Simon over a finalist on AI; doesn’t happen. It’s the other judges who tend to disagree because they are judges.

This Muna’s accent sef, it’s so hard to take one seriously when they speak with an accent acquired simply by visiting MMA.

I like Muna a lot for her courage to go into the rap game after her MBGN reign, but for this, she is so WRONG. Whatever issues they had before this show, shud not have surfaced at the contest at all!!! A Judge has an opinion that determines who win the contest, while the host’s opinion is never uttered. She was DISRESPECTFUL to Mode Nine. I also hope this is not a publicity STUNT she is PULLING to get more attention to herself?

  48. Tayo

pass the mic meehn lmao…very rude

  49. curious observer

    May 9, 2012 at 4:11 pm

Well on second thought, when she said she thinks she also has a say, she might have been speaking as someone who loves hiphop with a right to an opinion, she probably did not mean she had a say because she was a host on the show (clearly that would be ludicrous) .

However it wasnt the best etiquette to voice her opinion at the time. She should have waited till after the show and they would have all had friendly banter over drinks or something. Bad place/timing of the comment made Mode 9 lash out (he probably would have been less antagonistic at a different forum) leading to the infamous “pass the mic” comment. Muna probably just said that cos she also felt disrespected.

Mistakes made on both sides. Moving on…

  50. Partyrider

    May 9, 2012 at 4:14 pm

Seems they both had ‘accumulated beef’ towards each other,’cos mode9 sounded like he had that thought for a long time and was waiting for the right time to spill it I think what muna said bashed his ego.he shouldn’t have reacted that way..silence would have been the best..
As for muna..”pass the mic mehnn..” that was rude ..”I also have a say” Ermm no you don’t,you have an opinion not a say and your opinion shouldn’t be voiced out like that on a show with thousands of people watching.if she didn’t agree she should have said something like “I actually felt Mr A’s rap but the judges have the final say,so hey that’s it ” simple..
Too bad for her,cos I doubt she’ll be invited to host any other show ever are the public eye,you must watch everything you say or do..

  51. ao

    May 9, 2012 at 4:14 pm

It sounds as if Muna spoke on impulse without thinking and because it was in a public arena did not know how to retrace her steps without losing face. She should have stayed in her lane and simply presented while the judges judged the competition. Nevertheless, I do not think that the whole incident warrants this level of attention and noise unless people have other issues with Muna that they are trying to advance through this one incident. Mode 9 handled the situation and stated that he has moved on so let us move on too.

My take on this: Even the hosts of american idol and so u think u can dance say stuff like what muna said, and the judge either shrugs or smiles but they never argue right back.

Muna as a mature woman she ought to be shld have hushed after he snatched the mic back. At the same time D dude shld have let it go (it was also rude of him to take the mics dat way) + as a judge u shld know pple would disagree with you abt stuff so u just have to suck it in.

@BN, seriously, What are your modalities for approving comments? Shouldn’t it be that at least, swear words shouldn’t be in the sentence? Abi what’s now the point of your “Comment awaiting moderation” if I keep seeing F*** and S*** on your wall, abeg abeg take caution and remove @tyez mavin’s comment.
That said, I COMPLETELY agree with @passing through’s response to @Gemma, let’s not make this a gender thing.
BTW, it’s not even a matter of culture or tradition, cos in the workplace, to a large extent, I don’t think we shd overflog culture or tradition, else many ppl will not grow in their careers cos they’ll always be promoting ppl who are older than u and not ppl who do d job, I digress, anyway, what she did was just verrrry unprofessional, there’s a way you could say this without hurting egos. That being said too, this is Naija, this doesn’t necessarily mean the end of her career, she’s a really pretty girl, if a client wants her, an agency’s got to get her, though her prices might either have to fall or at least remain static for a while sha, and she might also have to get a PR person. #mytwokobo

Mode9 got his big boy ego bruised, plain and simple. All Muna said was ” I disagree” na him don com give life testimony. “I’ve been listening to [rap abi shey na hip hop] for a long time” and so?? Wetin you do? Dem give you award? Una wan collect am for bank? Naija and this “RESPECT” sef eh, it’s too much. Muna did not cross the line, she was respectful. And if Nokia decides not to bring her back, they also should remove Mode9 because he was rude. He sounded exactly like D’Banj during the Sahara interview with their “Do you know who I am” nonsense. And so what?? She has an opinion, he did not have to bully her to impose his opinion. AND yes, pass the mic. Nonsense.

And all the people who are blowing air up Mode9’s ass, go buy his songs and actually put money in his pocket so he can regain that big boy swag. Ooshii, and here I thought she cussed him out or something. Respect elders ko, respect elders ni. Elders sef must also respect themselves.

Errrmmm! Please pic the mic jorrr! E’ssss enuf na! Lol! She was very unprofessional and started the “word war”. However, Mode 9, should also have acted professionally and aired his opinions after the show. I’m glad she’s apologized (via twitter). Oya! If you’ve never made a mistake, made a poor judgement call or acted unprofessionally ever – biko raise your hand (Your guguru and Epa is coming oh!).
Your human and bound to make mistakes. Its how you handle the mistake and where you go from there that makes you different. Muna please no more “pass the mic oh!”.

Mode 9 acted like a big baby who has issues taking criticism. He blew what she said waaaaaay out of proportion. He could have handled it better. She, on the other hand, needs to learn to bridle her tongue – but I don’t think she meant any disrespect to him initially. She started out just giving her opinion, but he reacted like a child.

Seems like Mode 9 has a self esteem problem cos he felt the need to spit his track record ‘i’ve been listening to hip hop for years…im the judge…blah blah blah’. That being said, Muna, your attitude really stunk. Not ladylike at all. Please lose the stupid accent too.

ok seriously.. Muna started by saying ” i dont agree with u but lets pass d mic” dat was after MODE 9 had passed the mic.. he didnt need to collect the mic to respond.. there was no need for dat now!! he didnt need to react at all… but she too she shudnt have taken it so personal.. she shud have taken her cue from Dare art alade he was d host of glop naija sings and defintely had an opinion but was mature enough not to express it.. she shudnt have blurted out lyk dat but anyways both were wrong.. but MODE 9 didnt need to prove anything..
