BN Bytes: Wizkid & Sarkodie Bag the 2012 BET Award for Best International Act (Africa)

A huge congratulations to the Nigerian superstar, Wizkid who represented to the fullest at the recently concluded BET Awards 2012 last night, July 1st in Los Angeles, which was hosted by the veteran highest grossing actor of all time, Samuel L. Jackson, where he won the prestigious award for Best International Act – Africa.

In a similar vein to last year’s BET Awards, when 2Face Idibia and D’Banj jointly won the award for Best International Act – Africa, this year’s winners were Nigeria’s Afro-Pop Sensation, Wizkid and Ghana’s “Rapperholic”, Sarkodie.

Amongst a group of very qualified nominees – Camp Mulla (Kenya), Ice Prince (Nigeria), Lira (South Africa) and Mokobe (Mali), these two came out on top but nonetheless, congratulations to the very talented nominees who are representing Africa to the fullest and keep churning out beautiful music.

This is Wizkid‘s second major international award as he won the award for Best African Act at the 2011 edition of the MOBO Awards.

Also, reppin’ it for Naija, was Maybach Music Group’s Wale, who won the 2012 BET Award for Best Collaboration for his chart-topping single with Miguel“Lotus Flower Bomb” off his sophomore album, “Ambition”.

He also hit the stage with his Maybach Music artists, Meek Millz and Rick Ross to perform their massive hits “Bag Of Money”, “So Sophisticated” and “Black Magic”. Here’s a video of them shutting it down at the show. (Wale almost spilled champagne all over Kanye West‘s All-white ensemble… that would have been a mess.)

If the BET best International Act (Africa) will not be presented live and on the stage. Why did they create that category. Wizkid and Sarkodie were presented their awards backstage. It is annoying, sickening and very discriminatory. What kind of message are they sending with that kind of action? I think Africa should boycott this award going forward, except there is an assurance that we will share the same stage with other awardees.

Why wont they give u pple ur award backstage when u come off to dem desperate. You pay millions of dollars for them to sing two lines and seeming like without their approval we haven’t arrived yet.We cnt be more american than the americans biko. Our category would definitely not pass the best africa act category or shld we also tak abt femi kuti’s category at the grammys wasnt it best africana act also? What other category are we waiting for best album of the year at BET,vidoe of the year blah blah blah hahahaha in America? u pple go wait. These American artistes are all abt making their money and it gives them more exposure in Africa if they accept a collabo with a well known artiste. If there is a void the Americans feel needs to be occupied by African musicians and their music trust me dey’ll search for u guys. For the mean time u pple shld accept ur awards backstage.BTW for 2 pple to win d award just shows how irrelevant that category is cos dey will never do dat for jay z and birdman, bey and rihanna. They will always choose one winner,if it were dat relevant then bey and rihanna shld be tieing in the same category. All d same congrats wizkid.

I agree with, since we have no respect in their eyes we should learn how to earn respect by boycotting and demanding stage presence!!! I live here and I find Black people in America can be very ignorant and down right snobbish. I dont waste time in letting them know my worth, we are more educated, have more self confidence ( which I have found out disappears with some Sfricans sometimes ) in dealing and relating with other ethnicities, wake up people if we cant repair our image, who will?

      July 2, 2012 at 9:35 pm

I agree. If only Nigerian artists will see and know their worth, they will understand that receiving their award backstage is a complete slap to the face. What is the purpose of an award that you can receive publicly on the same stage with other artists? I still don’t understand why people are congratulating such mediocrity, discrimination, and insult. Just saying

when we africas start having some self respect, the world will take note. we pay these intl clowns( yeah i said it) millions to come and perform in our countries or as someone put it ”to sing two lines” so pray tell, how can we be seen as anything other than low self esteem having desperadoes who need their approval to feel relevant. I didnt get the whole chop my money and onyinye remix psquare did with akon nd rick ross. as far as i’m concerned p square is better those two musicians put together-and psquare isnt that great so you get my drift;p lolz. and dont even get me started on d banj and kanye. dat one just gets me riled up. africa is chock full of talent. with loads of confidence, proper branding and a take no prisoners guerilla and traditional marketing strategy, the sky’d be our stepping stone. *smh* two artists winning the same award and they hand it to them backstage?! worahell!! ARISE AFRICA!!

Africans need to wake up and smell the coffee. We will never be important in the eyes of these Americans/ Hollywood. Like what’s the point of nominating them if you know their award will be given to them backstage? That’s just disrespectful and mean.

    July 2, 2012 at 9:13 pm

Everything is one step at a time. In a few years, hopefully not more than 2015, we too win collect on stage. Then by 2020, hopefully we will collect ‘best’ awards not just best African category. Let’s not dampen their joy by playing politics. Kudos to the lads.

@ Sassycassie I hear you but just check out youtube and see psquares highest hits on their ‘Do me I do you’ track was about 2.5m tops. They sing some rubbish song with Akon and it is over 5m hits. Before you know it, they will be better known and getting 25m hits.

    Give it time….
    Leave Kanye alone o

Honestly, I don’t care for BET, it’s garbage. But, if you are going to recognize the talent of a whole continent, and you guys being black people yourself, why can’t you announce it on stage and present the awards to these artists where people can actually see them. I will say, next time they try that mess, it’s a waste of time and embarrasing going there to receive it backstage. If we don’t demand respect, they are not going to give it to us. In addition, I believe African musicians are good entertaining us, I can relate because that’s our culture. So, why kiss up to Americans for validation, let’s just focus on ourselves, continue to entertain each other, improve and do our best to put out the best out there. Let them come to us, not us go to them.

2 winners for 1 award? which one go carry am go home!!! Nawa for BET o!

  24. Turayo

    July 3, 2012 at 4:24 am

I didn’t even know BET had done this “two for the price of one” thing before but it is seriously disgusting. And what is with that “backstage” award thing? Seriously? What is with the Rosa Parks move? Really, BET, really? I only watched the channel for Tia Mowry’s show “The Game” and Kyla Pratt’s “Let’s Stay Together” and I only watched this award thing for Wizkid and Sarkodie only to be blindsided by this. And on top of that people are congratulating them?? Seriously, Nigerians, seriously? That’s some messed up ish and then Chuck Brown was barely mentioned (he died too).

Y’know what? na your fault be dat (a la Fela). Like others have said, una go praise Yankee over your own, praise America, America, America. When their stars come to Nigeria, they are practically worshiped. Common courtesy they cannot extend, no be your fault BET shebi na dese small pikin wey dey lap up any kin’ attenshun una dash them, like dog wey neva chop. ooshi.

Truth is African artistes haven’t earned a place on the BET award stage yet. When we start making music and videos that will boost their ratings and drive americans gaga we can climb that stage. Till then, promoting African music remains a humanitarian project for BET please don’t get it confused with their real business; servicing the african american community where wizkid, sarkodie etc and their music mean nothing. Accept their charity please, don’t claim emtitlement.

      July 9, 2012 at 9:55 pm

Yours is, by far, the most ignorant and condescending comment I have read since the whole kerfuffle . On what metric are you basing your assessment? African artists do not have to make Americans “go gaga” to share the stage with others. It is simply a matter of respect. We, Africans, support African Africans in their struggles and endeavors. Why cannot they reciprocate the gesture? The African artists are even more talented than the so-called R&B and Hip-hop heavy weights. You are confusing talent and opportunity. These artists do not have big budget, but it is far from meaning that they are not talented. Your comment represents an excellent example of the mis-education and cultural identity crisis lots of Black people in the diaspora suffer, especially in America. If White people in Europe, Asia, and elsewhere recognize their talents, why is it hard for our people to do the same? You ought to bury your head in the sand in shame.

    @ Scot

In other award show in London, where Wizkid was nominated at least he walked up the stage to receive the award. But, I see what you are saying, Nigerian music will never be mainstream in America because Black Americans have created different music genres that is mainstream in their community. However, out of curiosity, why give one award to two artists, I’ve just never heard of that. The interesting thing is Black Americans have negative, biased, narrow minded perception about Africa as a continent, Nigeria as a country than other group of people. Okay, I can’t blame them, there’s still an underlining resentment for what our ancestors did to them, and it’s not like Nigeria is a developed country where you can easily be proud of. Just the same way they have reservations about us, we also have about them. Which is unfair on both sides. I hope Nigeria can do better as a country and we as Nigerian people can acknowledge our mistakes and we can have better understanding of one another.

D most annoying part of it,is that, they travel all d way to los angeles for an award being lingerd with two people to Bag home frm different country, How can they share the Award, Who will take it home…….talking of the Backstage presentation, it is totally unfair and ungreatful to Africans.. Africa is Above being treated like PRE- MATURE *LOW LIVES* We re tallented, and that should nt be taken for granted……We should stand and RISE Above their LIMIT. It will only take time….!!!!!!!!!!! All the same CONGRAT to WIZ and SARK…

Oh so that’s how it is – African artists recieve the award backstage? What kind of a deal is that? What do they mean to tell us overhere in Africa? And for two artists to be given one award, where has that ever happened? There’s something not about this, but then big up for at least recognising our artists!
