LPM Vendor Spotlight
How did you get into fashion design?
Fashion design is something I knew I always wanted to do. When I was younger, I used to make miniature outfits and accessories for my barbie dolls and went on to design my own clothes and “look” as a teenager fast forward to a Degree in International Business from the University of Hull and courses in fashion design from London College of Fashion and Central St Martins and here I am today.
Tell us about your brand evolution
The Viv La Resistance brand has really evolved in the past 4years. The signature of the brand has remained true, but the design has progressed. We are focusing more on sustainable luxury, promoting our African heritage through our custom batik prints, and expanding the brand both home and abroad.
What would you say is the VLR signature/aesthetic?
Fashion meets Art, 21st century African woman.
LPM has just launched a new initiative called #DiscoverDesign. In your opinion what makes African fashion unique? Worth “discovering”?
I think African fashion is unique and worth discovering because the African fashion industry is a new emerging industry, compared to the rest of the world, I believe that we have such an abundance of creative talent in Africa just waiting to be discovered. Despite the many challenges and obstacles faced by African designers, we are resilient, we are growing and we are slowly starting to gain recognition, Africa is coming. Watch out for us.
When is your next collection out and where can we purchase it?
The next collection will be out in Summer 2013, and would be available to purchase at the VLR store, at L’Espace and we are also working on making the collection available to purchase online.
Which is your favorite piece in your latest collection
My latest collection is currently in production, so as at yet I don’t have a favourite piece, so I will pick my favorite piece from my last collection the Kaleidoscope Collection and its a custom print tie-dye dress with Asoke details.
What would you say has been the highest point of your career till date?
I have had a few career high points including VLR taking part in Arise Magazine Fashion Week and MTN Lagos Fashion and Design week in 2011, where VLR emerged as one of the finalists for the young designer of the year competition, the opening of the VLR store, Magazine publications and VLR having its first stockist abroad.
But I think my highest career point is still being here, Surviving, there are many times when the pressure and challenges have been overwhelming, both business and personal and I have wanted just to pack it all in, but I am thankful for friends and family who continue to support, encourage and believe in both me and the VLR brand, God bless them all.
What is your vision for VLR in the next few years?
Promoting African fashion, Growth, Expansion and Consistency.
Any other exciting news you’d like to share with our readers?
Yes! We are really excited to share that VLR pieces are now available to purchase online for our clients worldwide on www.agnesandlola.com and they deliver anywhere in the world. Plus we have a capsule Ccllection coming out this summer and can’t wait to unveil to everyone! Also we have an online sale that should be coming up very soon on Asos marketplace so look out for that.
