How Far Will You Go For Acting? Nollywood Star Mercy Johnson Gets Dragged in the Mud for New Movie Role

Mercy Johnson - October 2013 - BellaNaija

Mercy Johnson is one of Nollywood’s biggest exports and in a new role for a movie, we’ve spotted photos of her getting dragged in the mud by a tow truck. This easily begs the question – How far are our actors willing to go for a movie role?

In turn, I ask you the very same thing – How far can you go if you were cast as a lead for a movie role?

She got dragged in the mud and this begs such a question? She hasn’t even done a nude scene yet. Get back to us when she does something more “gen gen”.

    • Jaydyte

      October 28, 2013 at 5:53 pm

Your comment Madam, is very ignorant, does it mean that you become a good actress when you have done a nude scene??? Puleezzz, in actual fact it is the egg head actresses that act in x-rated movies because they usually cannot memorize their lines. Get educated :(.

    • The Real Madam the Madam

      October 28, 2013 at 6:18 pm

Comprehension is fundamental darling. I didn’t assert that when I made my comment. My point was that I don’t understand why getting dragged in the mud begged such a question. If she had done a nude scene or something quite crazy, I would have gotten the point of the question.

I get your point. It may take a while for some others though. I think if she did a psychological thriller, lost major weight for a role, or even played 2 characters in a movie -male and/or female – then we’re getting there.

Thats the whole point. If you have a job, do it well! She
is just doing her job na?!

This is what MAKES Mercy Johnson A STAR beyond the
others…the real deal ….honestly sha …if this woman was given
the opportunity in just one series in the states …she ll make it
soo memorable …..she ll be the new HOLLYWOOD girl….

Sorry, Not to be a kill joy, but even in Nollywood, Of the thousand and millions she has done, how many will you remember in say 1o to 20 years time? Will you be able to say “oh this movie feat. Mercy Johnson, is one of the best nigerian movie because of her performance”? How many of her movies will you even remember off head in that time without scratching your head? Thats just Nollywood o.. Nevermind Hollywood..

    • Ubaby

      October 29, 2013 at 3:34 am

Ehmm madam hope….There are several of her movies she
would be remembered for not just because she is the epitome of
perfection when she acts but because she is that blessed in all
ramifications. For me, i think this is just her starting point and
more achievements are yet to knock at her door but trust me, time
will definitely tell. So yea…Mercy is dat good, close your face
      in shame biko….

what kind of question is that? How Far Will You Go For
Acting? like this is not her ob, is getting dragged in the mud a
big deal or out the box! haven’t u seen when actors lose massive
weight or even live a certain type of lifestyle just for a movie
role.. and you say how far will you go over getting dragged lol

    • nonye

      October 28, 2013 at 5:09 pm

good point, its not much compared to foreign actors that lost or gained weight for movie roles, lived in drug dens and brothels, gone homeless on the street.. etc but in the context of nollywood (and its massive room for improvement) i think mercy is reasonably dedicated to her craft when compared to the rest of her colleagues

The question no be am at all. I havent seen any far in this role yet. Absolutely no big deal. People do stunts that risk their lives, that is when to ask how far, or the nudity question

  8. Mimi

    October 28, 2013 at 5:18 pm

I still dont understand why she has not be nubbed for international movies like Gen and OmoT, I mean this chick is PHENOMENAL beyond description, she is the epitome and definition of VERSATILE actress, you cant help but love her unconditionally. Mercy Johnson is a way better actress than Omotola. Maybe she needs to revamp her PR machine cos she is a tad bit underrated. Like seriously. 2014 I want to see her in more international roles – ones that can challenge her even further, cos lord knows she has hit a glass ceiling in Nollywood. She is Excellent – love love love love her. !!!

    • Hope

      October 28, 2013 at 7:07 pm

Mercy is NOT a better actress than Omotola.

    • trufactoid

      October 28, 2013 at 7:14 pm

Omotola please sit ya behind down and stop diverting every topic to you?

    • nene

      October 28, 2013 at 8:05 pm

i agree. omotola is good, and she’s better than mercy. but mercy is definitely one of the actresses that can act quite well like bimbo, patience ozokwor, gloria young, hilda dokubo, and many more. genevieve is not on that list, but she has a lot of fans though.

    • Naveah

      October 28, 2013 at 7:33 pm

The way she acts is suitable for Nollywood films NOT international films. Do not get me wrong, I like Mercy as an actress because you can see her commitment and dedication BUT she is very melodramatic which works for the stage and for our sensibilities BUT NOT for an international audience. Secondly, Mercy lacks polish.

    • Mimi

      October 29, 2013 at 12:30 am

    • Mz Socially Awkward...

      October 28, 2013 at 7:25 pm

I know rightttt?? That voice *dreamy look*… But, I have to say that some of the roles he takes on are a bit of a turn off. He seems to have been shoehorned into the whole “royal prince of a village in the east” character and I think he should step out of that box, start looking for more creative directors who could do more with him. I ache for the day when I’m no longer tormented by the wooden efforts of Uti, Alex and the other gang members of the “celebs-turned-actors/actresses” committee (I’m begging that gang with all my heart – please get professional training or simply quit)…

    • Mimi

      October 28, 2013 at 8:17 pm

Amen in Jesus name. Nollywood land of praising mediocrity such as Uti, ALex, Susan Peters, MonaLisa Chinda, Uche Jumbo etc etc etc. Cant act to save their lifes nor even articulate well, yet fools who call them selve fans hail them, whether for the looks or their talent me i dont know. Nollywood has only a handful of great actors and actresses, EVERYBODY is is Mediocre and forever will be HOOD FAMOUS.

i love mercy johnson…d most talented actress in nollywood…very versatile and i think she is so so underrated, she may not have chanel bag to show like genny or go for all d events like rita but as far as acting goes, she is number one. she makes all her roles interesting, im not a big fan of naija movies but if i see mercy in it, i will definitely watch it, is it school girl, mad woman, tomboy, ashi, married woman…name it! abeg d lady is talented. i rest my case

  18. Great

    October 28, 2013 at 6:59 pm

Mercy Johnson is pure Ace. In the Uk we luv u die. I still remember where she played the role of a very stubborn village girl who ended up marrying the prince *where she actually placed a life goat right on her back round her neck * . I totally agree that mercy is underatted and needs better PR becos she sure is in a different league ………. way above the rest , even higher than Rita, tonto , omotola who in my opinion are so overhyped.

  19. Great stuff

The movie Mortal Inheritance alone feat. Omotola.. puts everything Mercy has acted to shame. Go watch it if you havent on the internet and see pure acting..No over acting, raw emotions, brilliant delivery! So OmoT cant be overhyped!! 😛

  20. Naveah

    October 28, 2013 at 7:45 pm

What is with these questions, please? Do people go around asking an architect, how far will you go to build the structure? This is part of her job for which she gets more money than most people make in a year to do it! Melissa Leo shot Frozen River Frozen River in sub-freezing temperatures and a lot of that she was in water, Christian Bale lost 63-pound for the Machinist but nothing was said about any of that because it is understood that it is part of bringing realism to the part. Many actors like Angelina Jolie and Tom Cruise do their own stunts some which are more dangerous than being dragged on a very healthy behind in the mud. The better question is will the production cover her medical expenses if she snags herself on a broken bottle embedded under that mud.

    • Baby

      October 28, 2013 at 10:10 pm

Nave ah Hear your fake self talking? Have you ever heard of any stunts person in naija? Do you think the rest of us do not know that they use stunts people abroad? When u guys come here and make comments be real, this is Nigeria where we know the level the industry is so pls that ur comment doesn’t make sense……

    • Naveah

      October 29, 2013 at 3:13 pm

Baby, your name reflects your comments. My friend, like some one has already said, comprehension is fundamental, if you weren’t so defensive against something I wasn’t doing you would have understood what I was trying to say. See you how you are jumping up with complex as if I was questioning your intelligence and funnily enough I began to do just that after I read your comments. Let me break it down for you like mama dey chew meat for her pickin before she carry put am for hin mouth. I said Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie amongst others do their own stunts nobody makes a big deal of it, Mercy being dragged in the mud is part of doing her own stunts and it should be a big deal either. Anything she does in the course of her job should not be such a big deal, this is what they pay her to do. Comprende?

You talk about people are fake on here, sweetie if we are all fake, you are as blind as a bat. The industry needs to stop congratulating itself for it accomplished years ago and start working hard for the next set of improvements. Stop applauding an actress for simply doing what is expected of her and start doing really things that moves the industries forward. You are sitting there on your complacent, non creative arse backing nonsense and calling other people who are offering constructive criticism names. Which wan are you adding to this equation besides hot air? If you have nothing valuable to add, go back to your stroller and insert your pacifier back in your mouth. Have a good day and here’s to hoping your Similac is nice and warm.

    October 28, 2013 at 7:52 pm

@trufactoid…Lol..I love the fact that you had to resort to that! I mean, you probably have no argument to put forward for her so might as well accuse the poster of being Omotola..lmao! Anyway, if the post i replied to didnt mention OmoT in a condescending manner (her being inferior to Mercy acting wise, i mean WTF!!) i wouldnt have mentioned her name.. So sorry to Mercy fans that their “moment” is getting a bit ruined here.. Apologies.. Just that some people cant just stop making really senseless posts..

  22. honeymix

    October 28, 2013 at 7:59 pm

I think no one should compare two or more actresses together. MJ is definitely good and I love her, but Hope, whats your own na , abi is this Omotola. Let people praise and hype you not you yourself.

    • Hope

      October 28, 2013 at 8:07 pm

Is this for real? You talk like im against people praising Mercy! Of course im not, I like Mercy well enough, she is not my favorite but she a decent actress, and i wouldnt not commented if nobody had mentioned OmoT’s name… Its actually funny people accusing me of being

  23. deb

    October 28, 2013 at 8:27 pm

I wasn’t going to pass a comment until I saw hope’s comment. Omotola I repeat is not a fantastic actress, she only does her facial expressions well. Do not let us mix story line with the way actresses act their roles. They are two different things$ for example, I was least impressed at her acting in last flight to abuja. Mercy Johnson just needs to feature in more or better scripted movie and boom u did see her act well and she should try and rebrand. Finish

    • Hope

      October 28, 2013 at 8:46 pm

Yes she is a fantastic actress..I agree with you last flight wasnt her best but she didnt have an awful lot to do to be honest.. I posted a comment earlier as a reply to someone that only Mortal Inheritance alone is better than anything Mercy has ever done.. ill add Ties that bind (one of her most recent ones) to the list too.. oh and Deepest of dreams.. her facial expression says it all.. No gimmicks or over acting required! Mercy dosent have control over her performance/emotions like OmoT does… Like i said, not hating on Mercy, i like her well enough but OmoT is simply better.. And saying she should pick her script better – truth is if she was offered those kinda roles you want for her, why would she reject it?? (I take it you mean movies like Ije, Tango with me, Ties that bind, Torn etc) but she hasnt been offered, and there a reason for that..

  24. YesIsaidIt

    October 28, 2013 at 8:32 pm

Mercy as great an actress as she is brand is not as top notch as Genny,Omotola or Rita due to her own fault. She is so good an actress yet is not selective with the roles she plays, She is so great but the same ole aristos babes campus acting roles is becoming too much. Tis about you say NO to some scripts and be HIGHLY selective, its not like you need the money, cos at least now you have a husband who can take care of you. Choose the very best movies with the best directors, who can challenge you. I mean i just recently watched her very recent movie “Ashawo” plyaing an ashawo and speaking Pigeon english throughout, and i was thinking Cmon Mercy you are a mother now, leave these nonsense roles to the likes of Tontoh Dikeh, Angela Okorie, Uche Obodgo, and the rest of the RAZZ bunch, You need to up your game a lil, you have played this type of roles 500 times already. Give it Up. You have done enough QUANTITY movies and we have all witness your great potential, now try and do some QUALITY movies even if it means just 5 movies a year only. BE SELECTIVE – like Rita, Ini, Omoni, Nse, Genny and Omotola are. You are too good to let your self be pidgeon holed into these mediocre movies by mediocre directors – Change your team, your manager, your PR, revamp for 2014 as someone said earlier.

    • Hope

      October 28, 2013 at 9:00 pm

Actually, its those “razz” roles, dirty roles that bring the best out of her to be honest! She just cant play rich or cooperate girl role as well (no way near!) so id say stick to your strongest point, but maybe be more classy with it.. she shouldnt be accepting scripts like “ashewos” or what have you like you said, but then if she gets a script like “the prostitute” for example..that would be right up her sleeve big time! She shines best when she has to dirty and razz up herself for a movie..

    • Baby

      October 28, 2013 at 10:06 pm

You are really stupid walahi, what has been a mother got to
do with her roles? It is foolish and backward thinking like yours
that stereotype actors and think the roles they act are what they
do in real life? Why would you blame mercy for a problem that is
prevalent in the industry? Do you not know that they stereotype
actors and actresses with the kind of roles they play? So why would
you tell her to look for certain roles likes he alone will dictate
what happens in thE industry…..this is not Hollywood where money
is readily available for productions……next time u people
comment be realistic and use your brains cos your comment is
irritating and so annoying…..what is top notch about omotola???..
Time will tell how she bought her way to TIME most influencial 100
cos that is so not true…….

    • e-bukun

      October 29, 2013 at 4:25 pm

Ok er…as an actor if you pigeonholed yourself then you become boring on the screen, case in point Genevieve. I love Genny, but her characters are linear and I don’t really expect much anymore. Heck, I’d even put Omotola in that same boat. The people who are really doing it these days are Rita D, Uche J, Ireti Doyle (I think the movie is called Torn), and Funke Akindele. Actors, all of them, need to be pushing the envelope, and not many of them can boast of that.

    • Hope

      October 29, 2013 at 9:56 pm

Unfair to accuse OmoT of that. Ije, Ties That Bind and
Amina have all been really challenging role.. The only wishy washy
one is Last flight to Abj really.

    • Eve82

      October 30, 2013 at 11:57 am

YesIsaidIt…you have spoken well! She needs to rebrand her image with more polished and challenging roles.

  25. fred

    October 28, 2013 at 8:47 pm

Lmao, the comparism btwn Mercy and Omotola is ridiculous, Omotola can’t act to save her life, but she can act and win awards for it, pls the fact she’s not ur favourite doesn’t mean she isn’t atop her game.. Omotola has been on top for most of her life, so if Mercy thinks she’s as Good, let her face the challenge, if being melodramatic is good acting then the likes of Omotola and genevieve would still be on top bcos they did it with much elegance and class. Rita didn’t have to go into a Mud, or tie a goat on her back to win an AMAA for the meeting movie..

  27. svelte lady

    October 28, 2013 at 9:39 pm

Uche Jombo is a lovely actress, and she knows exactly how to interpret her scripts. Mercy is good too, but I seriously am not of the opinion that she is a better actress than Omotola. I’m a fan of both of them, but Omotola knows her onions more, and has played more memorable roles than Mercy has….having said that, I still love me some Mercy Johnson.

Seriously you talking about Awards, So you respect these FAKE nigerian Awards. Please dont use any nigerian awards (in nigeria or abroad) as BRAGGING RIGHTS. Majority are USELESS to say the least, so to say Omotola has won awards is laughable at best. I dont respect ANY nigerian movie awards, none whatsoever. The titles for the categories alone are so stupid. Its a complete joke.

    • Rex

      October 30, 2013 at 6:08 am

Educate yourself before coming online to act intelligent
and spilling nonsense. Omotola has more international awards than
local. Wikipedia , imdb, google, heck even Facebook where you
probably only visit will give you much information! Totally
disgusted when people get carried away by ‘NEW” news and forget
immediately about “HISTORY” Mercy johnson is a trying very very
hard telenovela actress. OMOTOLA is a world class act actress.
Being pulled in the mud? Laughable…omotola has done more in
abused, deepest of dreams, Amina etc yet she did them with panache
and no over acting. Like some have said and for me, omotola has the
BEST facial reactions in Nollywood ! Next to her, is my Nse! Mercy
and Uche Jombo and maybe a tonto are all in same category good but
      over acting/melodramatic soap opera actors.

wonder why people compare hollywood with nollywood;Hollywood portrays what happens abroad and nollywood portrays what happens in naija.we Nigerians keep using our tongue to disgrace our country while an average white man can never speak ill of his country.i don’t know why an average Nigerian in the states thinks that nothing in Nigeria can ever work or be worthwhile.the truth is that every nation of the world have their strength and weakness.lets celebrate our strength and stop trying to copy the white people.i luv naija and cant wait to run back home after my graduation in jan

Lets not get things twisted..each actor has his or her own style of portraying their acting skills..Omotola,Genevieve and Mercy are good actors but the way they portray their roles bring out the difference in them.Omotola is a good actress who at this point in her career do not go for any kinds of role..and the roles she plays she does that so well like wise Genevieve.but what i have come to notice is that the roles Mercy do play cannot be done by Omotola or Genevieve at this point in their careers…Mercy is good yes but her standard is still nollywood.
The simple truth is,Omotola,Genevieve are top actors with high brand and alot of popularity same..Mercy is to be compared with actors like Ini Edo,Uche Jombo..those are her mates…Cause the likes of Omotola,Genevieve,Rita-Dominic are the very best in nollywood…
