Van Persie Netherlands World Cup 2014
Everyone in the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador, Brazil knew they were in for a thriller as the 2 teams walked unto the pitch. Football powerhouse Netherlands were the favourite to win but Costa Rica did not make it as easy ride. Despite, 15 shots on target compared to Costa Rica’s 3, Netherlands just could not break through.

Several close calls on both ends later, it was down to penalties as regular and extra time did not yield any goals. In what is being called an unprecedented tactical move, Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal substituted the goalkeeper in the dying minutes of extra time. No one was sure of what to expect from Newcastle’s Tim Krul but boy did he deliver! 2 penalty saves later, Netherlands were the winners.

The boys in orange will meet Argentina in the next round. The South American team beat Belgium earlier today with a 1 – 0 scoreline.
