Charles Novia on Daniel Okereke Rape Scandal: I feel Pity and Admiration for Stephanie Linus

Charles Novia - January 2014 - Same Sex Bill - BellaNaija

Nollywood producer/director Charles Novia who always shares his opinions on trending topics in Nigeria is back again. And this time, he is sharing his thoughts on the alleged rape case that Daniel Okereke, brother of Nollywood actress, Stephanie Linus, is involved in.

In a short article on his website titled, “Stephanie’s Cross,” he gives his perspective of Stephanie’s statement she released in the aftermath of the incident:

Reading the statement, I could not help but feel pity and admiration for Stephanie. Indeed, it is a harrowing experience to have a family member accused of such a despicable and heinous crime and it is even more traumatic to be linked with the accused as if by being related by blood, she is culpable too in the crime. Using recent templates in entertainment, one should ask if Brandy Norwood was culpable when Ray J leaked the sex videos of Kim Kardashian a few years ago? Or some other examples I cannot remember at present?

The truth is that in law, each one is judged by their own actions and Stephanie is not in any way under the limelight for a crime which she knew nothing of. For that, I wholly sympathize with her and pray for comfort for her and other members of her family at this trying period. No matter the outcome of the case, there will always be a suspicion that Daniel Okereke did something to blacken the family name and the outcry against rape has been passionate (and rightly so) in the past decade in Nigeria. I support any action taken against rapists by the law courts and while the onus of proof lies with Daniel to prove his innocence, there is no gainsaying that this case is going to be a watershed in Nigeria’s legal system for the interest it has generated. In a way, the family name is a respected name in both the business and entertainment sectors and a high profile case such as this will involve much microscopic scrutiny.

I commend Stephanie’s bravery in bringing out the statement. She has proved by her action to be a worthy role model for a present generation.

has this case really been investigated?
was the lady in question actually raped or we just live in a world where every allegation made by a lady is nothing but the truth?

Funny how its Stephanie who gets his prayers. How about the girl who was raped and so terribly humiliated???? (thank goodness she had the strength and courage to speak out). Our society is so hypocritical and lacking in morals. There is no “system” that protects human beings as a whole and so women and children are unprotected and at the mercy of mad men. If you dont have a brother and male cousins with guns, you’re on your own as a woman. Just dispicable really.

I am sorry, but from the testimony of various girls who claimed to have been raped by this man, Stephanie and her family must have heard of this before hand, that is clear, some of the girls said nobody believed them, they must have heard of this and did nothing, that is just as bad in my opinion, its not her fault he is a rapist but what did you do to help any of his past victims you no doubt must have heard about Stephanie?

How do we know they MUST have heard it and “IT IS CLEAR”? We should not make definitive statements when what we want to do is ask a question or raise a possibility.
We outright accuse someone who may be innocent. Her statement implied that all of this was news to her. And she even went to the extent of giving him the benefit of doubt ( like she should) by saying the crimes are “alleged”. If there is someone or people out there who know different, let them challenge her with how she was told about any prior allegations or cases.
Also folks, while rape is a most dastardly crime, let us all not assume a rape truly occurred just based on allegations. A lot of men refuse to pay or pay the right amount after an consensual act and piss off the women.
That said, I think I read somewhere that this guy may have confessed and said he was sorry for what he did. If true, then we can move on to the next phase of getting the poor girl justice. Internet mob lynchings are not justice.
BTW: we need to make sure that a mostly incompetent police force is made to perform at a high level in such cases.

God bless you ! Thats the point that people have been trying to make. The family have known this for so long.
This guy brandishes a gun at any given point in the village. this article shows little or no concern for his victims.
“The family name is a respected name in both the business and entertainment sectors “.
What about the girls and her family and how they feel. Moreover, the girl may become labelled for life as the girl that was raped . This girl needs a good lawyer. I just wish for her that a well seasoned lawyer picks interest in this case. I empathise with Stephanie and what she has achieved so far. But if its true that even thier mum condones this then God be the ultimate judge.

This in an insensitive write up, Someone was raped!!!!! How about her? Ever thought of what she might be going through? Pointless insensitive write up

I really feel for Stephanie Linus, but like some mentioned before me, what about the humiliations the vitims suffered? did Stephanie’ and/or her family know about this but kept everything under wraps? No hating, I say this because it is rumoured that this guy used to brag about being Steph’s brother in order to lure the girls. Hope more will come out and speak .

Why do you think that Stephanie and her family are aware of his crime in the past. In every household there is a black sheep. We all have siblings that do sorts of evil stuff that we don’t know about. I sympathize the girl

Dear Kiki, I agree with you that some families have black sheeps or bad eggs. However, it is not the case here. This guy brandishes a gun about in the village which everyone is fully aware of. And boasts that he is untouchable. Other girls have brought issues of rape and heartless crimes this guy committed before his family, and nothing was done . That is why an increasing proportion of the public refuse to be fooled . This is guy has hidden under the clout of his social status far too long.

The onus lies on the state to prove his guilt not the other way round. We practise “Innocent until proved guilty”
