Erykah Badu & her Huge Afro cover FADER Magazine

The FADER just released their May 2016 issue and amazing soul singer Erykah Badu is on the cover. This would be the second time that the soul-singer, doula (midwife) and co-owner of a production house would be a cover star for the magazine.

The cover story focuses on Badu’s career and life changes as she approaches her 45th birthday, her controversial social media presence, and her views on black struggle in the 21st century.

Here’s are excerpts from the magazine:

On her Kids talents and their ability to speak more than one language
“I just wanted to make sure that whenever I take over the country, I have a secretary of state, defense, and a peace ambassador at hand”

On her Social media presence
“Being on Twitter, it sometimes feels like when I’m trying to talk to my kids—not that the people I debate with on Twitter are kids or below me—as a parent or an elder that’s been here for a while and they have a rebuttal. The whole world to me is kinda like a private joke between me and God sometimes, and that’s how I treat social media, too.”

On anticipating social unrest and the Black Lives Matter movement:
“I felt it coming on,” she says…“I was really feeling a strong affinity toward writing about what was going on around me. And I actually wrote about what’s happening right now in  ‘New Amerykah Part 1’. So I don’t feel the need to write it now, because I got it out…We can organize like a motherfu**er when police beat us up. But can we organize to stop black-on-black crime, or poor-on-poor crime? Because, you know, poor is the new black. You don’t have to be black now.”
