FRSC Prepares to Enforce Speed Limits in Nigeria Soon

Boboye Oyeyemi, Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has directed road marshals to be prepared for the enforcement of the speed limit device in the country.

Oyeyemi gave the directive on Wednesday while addressing officers and men of the Kaduna Sector Command.

He said that a Federal High Court in its judgment last week granted the FRSC the mandate to enforce the use of the speed limit device.

“As such, the legal hurdle has been cleared; we had a public hearing and President Muhammadu Buhari has given his approval for the enforcement of the speed device.

We are just waiting for the House of Representative’s report before we commence enforcement.

We need to cut down the speed of vehicles and any way we can do this should be a welcome development.

We need to get it right because losing the active group of our population is not acceptable,” Oyeyemi said.

The corps marshal said that 50 per cent of crashes in the country were speed related, adding that President Buhari was worried about the situation.

He said that the president had given FRSC all the support it needed to meet its mandate, including provision of additional patrol vehicles, ambulances, administrative and recovery vehicles to ease operations.

“The government has shown its commitment, we must justify this trust by reducing road crashes, which is our major mandate,” he said.

The corps marshal also declared war on overloading and non usage of seat belts as part of efforts to curb road crashes.

He urged all sector commands across the country to step up enlightenment campaigns in motor parks, mosques, churches and public gatherings against overloading, over speeding and non usage of seat belts.

Oyeyemi said that motor park campaigns should be carried out regularly to educate drivers on why they must drive to stay alive and save lives.

He urged members of the corps to shun all forms of corruption and continue to imbibe civil approach in dealing with members of the public to get their support.
