A Lagos Island Customary Court on Wednesday dissolved the 15-year marriage between one Dapo A. and his wife, Titilayo, over constant abuse and assault by the latter’s mother-in-law.

The President of the court, Awos Awosola, ordered the dissolution of the marriage after concluding that the union had broken down irretrievably.

“The marriage between the two parties has broken beyond redemption. The marriage between the two is hereby dissolved with effect from today, June 29th,” Awosola ruled.

He also granted the custody of the three children; Basir, 10; Mutiat, 8; and Khadijat; 3, to their mother.

The petitioner, Titilayo, had earlier informed the court that she could no longer stay in the marriage because of the constant abuse and assault from her mother-in-law.

The 32-year-old trader said that her mother-in-law had turned her husband into a “simpleton” and was the one controlling their home.

“My husband and I have been married for 15 years and we are still staying in his family house where his mother also lives.

There has been constant trouble because of my mother-in-law’s presence in our home.

My husband takes directives from his mother about how to manage his home.

On several occasions, my husband will not eat the food I prepare just because his mother said he should not.

My mother-in-law had beaten and stripped me naked on two occasions and my husband did not say or do anything about it.

I can no longer bear the emotional and physical abuse as well as maltreatment,” she said.

The mother of three, therefore, prayed the court to dissolve the marriage.

The husband, Dapo, who did not deny the allegations, also prayed the court to dissolve the marriage as requested by his wife.

He told the court that his wife had refused to accept his pleas and had rejected all efforts toward reconciliation.

Very sad,the poor state of the economy is making a lot of young men run away from marriages, while the pastors are busy praying against the spirit of commitment from the men.

There’s need to pray more for prosperity in our homes, when a man can’t afford a decent place after 15 years of marriage,to get is privacy, may God have mercy.

I’m a Yoruba girl and Yoruba mother in laws are another thing. To make matters worse, lack of money to have one’s own place, makes a man more than foolish and especially tied to a Yoruba mother’s apron strings. May God help him.

Yoruba mother in laws can be terrible!!! They pretend to outsiders that they love and care for their daughter in laws but deal with the girl behind closed doors. They can be truly terrible.

You cannot have Abrahamic blessings if you reside with In-laws there should be a law against this. Men provide the basic needs according to MASLOW THEORY. God bless us all Amen.

Who are the mother in law, are they not the Nigerian women. The present feminist we have now in about 20-30 years time will be worse than this mother in-law in question.

No! It will be the other way round. We will be too busy running our empires to be poke nosing into our kids marriage. Our kids, (including in- laws) will be begging us to come around more often. Our homes will be haven for our daughters in law especially because we know how tough marriage can be.

This is a first. The husband does not deny the allegations. While he may be a mama’s boy, he’s honest.

For the past one week on BN, it seems only the women are commiting all the evils in Nigeria from cutting a child’s genital to mistreating their daughter in law. Thank God for Nigeria men, faithfull and cool headed

Paul are you for real or is this just a sarcastic comment? Faithful and cool headed Nigerian men for where? Maybe to their jobs because most are faithless and egotistical to their spouses…And they should continue…
