It’s another Friday and today’s BNFroFriday feature is mainly about straightening natural hair. I’ve been thinking of straightening my hair recently and I might do it this weekend so when I saw Ma Luchi‘s videos I knew I had to share.

Ma Luchi released a set of videos, the first showing her detailed wash day routine, how she detangles, washes and deep conditions on her 4C natural hair texture. In the second video she’s showing how she safely straightens her 4C natural hair as well. Before watching the video, Luchi shared some tips she uses that could also be helpful to you on your healthy hair journey. See the videos and tips below.

Washing

You can detangle hair when it’s wet or dry. However, hair is more brittle when it is wet so there could be more shedding. If your hair is severely tangled, wetting and washing before detangling is going to make it more tangled. In this tutorial, I chose to detangle my hair while it was dry because I had a lot of tangles in my hair (because I didn’t detangle properly before my last crochet hairstyle).

Detangling works best with wet hair if you don’t have a lot of tangles and knots to detangle. If your hair is like mine, you’re gonna have to work the tangles out before washing your hair. In the future, I will film a tutorial of how you can detangle hair in it’s wet state. – Ma Luchi

Straightening

I had already blown out my hair at home in the before picture. I used medium heat like most natural hair gurus recommend but it was ineffective because of the coarseness of my hair. Due to that, we decided it was best to blow it out (this time we used high heat) again at the salon before straightening. I decided to use less heat during straightening because:

1) I had already used too much heat due to blow drying twice
2) I don’t care much for bone straight hair
3) Knowing my hair, it’s gonna be impossible to achieve bone straight hair without using a lot of heat thereby putting my hair at risk for heat damage.
4) I don’t intend to wear my hair straight for a long time. I only straightened it for this trim.

P.S: If you intend to trim your hair, USE SHEARS instead of scissors. I’m not a hair guru, I just know how to grow my hair healthy and I try to share my ways with you so we can all have long, healthy hair 🙂 – Ma Luchi

Here’s a little bonus feature for you this week!

Ma Luchi tries out the popular 100 layers/coats of something trend that’s been going on for some time now, with a 100 layers of leave-in condition on her natural hair. She’s using Cantu Shea Butter’s Leave-In Conditioning repair cream, which I also use an get from either O’Naturals or Beautyrevng.com if I don’t go to the salon because I run out of it A LOT! Lol
