Episode 1 – Claimant

In this episode, Glo ambassador and wave-making superstar, D’banj‘s sudden emergence at a local restaurant where they sell the best amala in Enugu, sparks off a frenzy. D’banj fans rush to catch a glimpse of the super star. Olaniyi, the restaurateur, initially thinks he is daydreaming on seeing D’Banj at his restaurant. Professor Johnbull encounters the Dbanj at Olaniyi’s restaurant and an altercation soon ensued between the erudite scholar and the music icon. The conversation ends amicably and an impressed Professor Johnbull invites Dbanj and his friends to his home for the traditional Igbo hospitality.

Episode 2 – Eliza My Daughter

Episode 2 (Eliza My Daughter) centers on Elizabeth (Queen Nwokoye), daughter of Professor JohnBull.  Professor Johnbull strongly suspects his daughter is pregnant when she suddenly starts to vomit uncontrollably. Mai Doya, acted by Funky Mallam, innocuously stokes the fire. Seeking advice from Professor Johnbull, the wise one who knows it all, Mai Doya discusses with the scholar how his pregnant wife who is expecting their 9th child, has been vomiting rampantly. Mai Doya arrives in the middle of a serious concern over the health of Elizabeth. The nexus between vomiting and pregnancy which Mai Doya establishes arouses the curiosity of Professor Johnbull. He quickly launches into a flurry of activity which culminates in a discreet pregnancy test for his daughter. What did he find out? Is Elizabeth actually pregnant? Who is responsible for the pregnancy?

All the actors playing roles in the Professor’s household i.e. himself, daughter, son, and maid need to fully inhabit their roles. They are trying to hard and are not yet relaxed in the roles. I’m wondering if it’s directorial constraints i.e. whether they’re being micro-managed by the director, whether whoever’s directing is wielding too heavy a hand. I’ve most recently seen Kanayo O. Kanayo in October 1 and he truly inhabited and interpreted the role he played there. Mrs. Mercy Johnson-Okojie is a good comedic actress. This is not the first or second time she’s played this kind of role but here, like the professor, she not really relaxed into the role. And they speak like as if someone told them to be careful about their diction and their enunciation. Both these actors have done and can do much better. All the others, the amala joint owner, Mai Doya, and the others inhabit their roles.. The programme shows promise though. With more time, more practice over the course of the episodes, they’ll surely get better; they can only improve.
