“The law should take its natural course” – Saraki on Arrest of his Aide by DSS

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser (Media and Publicity), Yusuph Olaniyonu, Senate President, Bukola Saraki has reacted to the report of his Special Adviser on Youth Matters, Ikenga Ugochinyere‘s arrest by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Saraki said that the law should take its natural course. The statement read:

The attention of the Senate President has been drawn to a statement issued today to the media by the Department of State Services (DSS) in which the Department raised allegations against Ugochinyere Ikenga, an aide to the Senate President.

According to the statement, the DSS has not officially informed the Senate President of the allegations against Ikenga.

However, Saraki having read the statement now circulating online will want to make it clear that he will never condone any action by any of his aides which threatens the peace of the country or is against the provisions of the law.

Dr. Saraki hereby calls on the DSS to properly investigate the allegations against Ikenga and if he is found to have acted against the law, then the law should take its natural course.

Ugochinyere was arrested in the early hours of Thursday for allegedly trying to lead a protest to INEC office in Abuja, over the conduct of the December 10 legislative rerun in Rivers state.

Ugochinyere was also arrested by the DSS in April this year and detained for one month. He was later released without any charge.

A Federal High Court ordered the DSS to pay N20m as damages, a ruling the DSS has appealed.
