An undergraduate Babcock student Verishima Unokyur has reportedly committed suicide. Nollywood actress Foluke Daramola‘s husband, Olukayode Salako disclosed this via his Facebook page saying:

So Sad! What must have made this boy to take his own life?! What?! He was from a very responsible and financially comfortable home. He was getting good care from his mother?! He was a very good brilliant and quiet boy, who had the best of education! Mrs Unokyur has been a very good woman to her children, who has committed everything she has to their full support.

See his post below

This is so sad. Our love and prayers are with his mother and family. May his soul rest in peace.

May be he is gay and ashamed of it and end up commiting suicide because over religious country like Nigeria is trying to convince people being gay is sin. Which is a complete lie. It,s totally normal for a man or a woman to be gay. If you’re gay and living in Nigeria and your reading this please stay happy you are normal nothing is wrong with you. let those religious freak worry about there self’s.

This is the best response I have seen on this site in a very long while. Mental health situations can drive a young virile man to commit suicide because his own mind drove him to the edge. But in my dear country, we spritualise everything to the extent that signs of depressions are ignored . Schizophrenic tendencies are swept under religion even psychosis are called madness. Until we understand the mind and mental health problems , incidents like this will continue. It respects nothing

Assuming that the suicide may have been due to mental health or shame over sexuality is kind of a stretch, and is not particularly helpful for the memory of this young man. Let’s not jump into conclusions. I wish BellaNaija had done a bit of investigative journalism to give better pointers as to what could have led to this unfortunate event. It’s not just for storytelling: its so that others can read and learn and prevent reoccurrence in any way they can. May God console his family.

Imagine this handsome guy is gone like that and our homosexual fans are already using opportunity to advocate for themselves and crucify anyother person who thinks otherwise. And I was. wondering if this is the only reason why our young minds would decide to take their lives. What about family pressure, failing their exams, getting dumped, performing below expectations?

So much was talked about his mother. What about the father. The mother has questions to answer. Its not enough saying that the mother was too good to her children. Where is the father. Emotional torture can lead the guy into that.
