Boss Moves! Toke Makinwa Speaks on “Building a Successful Brand in the Digital Space” at NYU

Media personality and author, Toke Makinwa, gave a lecture on “Building a Successful Brand in the Digital Space” at New York University on Wednesday.

Earlier, Toke had become a subject of controversy over her invitation as a guest lecturer at NYU as fans questioned the authenticity of the NYU visit, pointing out that she wasn’t giving a general school community lecture but instead was scheduled to address a class.

The best-selling author took to her Instagram page to share photos and videos while giving her lecture.

Toke recently held a successful book reading and Meet and Greet event in Houston Texas to kick off the On Becoming USA tour and had hundreds of guests in attendance.

The atmosphere of the event was beyond electrifying as the author also shared tips on how to rise above life’s challenges and lessons on brand building. She further discussed how On Becoming has changed her life and given her the opportunity to meet people around the world who were willing to share their stories with her.

Way to go Toke, we are glad to see women making boss moves!

I am not understand this Toke’s NYU lecture thing anymore. So, where’s the class? Plus, after being called out by a Nigerian student of NYU who wanted to attend but couldnt find Toke’s class on the lecture day, she has deleted all the NYU-related posts she earlier posted. I really am not understand

She addressed a class of les than 15 students and made it seem like she was addressing a big audience at an event. If you study in the US you will know that any master’s student working for his/her department can chose to be a TA. I am a first year master’s student and I teach a class of 150 undergrads which is not a big deal. Toke needs to stop blowing things out of proportion.

15 ke? There were a total of 6 people in that room, and Toke and Lilian were among the six. Two of the students were not even Nigerians and did not know who Toke was but stayed because Lilian asked them to. The Toke woman has a brand and it is called LIES, that it. I give her a lot of credit for cashing in on her lies, but it is what it is. The book, everything that come out of her mouth and everything about her looks, all lies.

Na wah oooo why do Nigerian so called celebrities like to lie and famez on nothing how could she annouce on her page that she is a guest lecturer @ NYU when that is a big deceit. from the last I checked you have to be a person of repute and most have achieved a level academically or attain a peak height in business or chosen career to be invited as a guest lecturer even in universities in Nigeria and that will be properly carried out in a filled lecture/class room or at an auditorium. When asked about the lecture venue/room the response was on the down low that its a private event and held closed doors,,,LWKMD… Aunty quickly deleted all that guest lecture crap when busted. She only spoke to about four NYU students apparently under a tree as her friend invited her but alas aunty want to famez I beg park well and return home what content have you to be a guest lecturer or may be she think say na the rubbish VBLOG qualify her I just can’t stop laughing at this level of low self esteem. Aunty wehdone ma.

All na packaging. Nigerians love packaging. They will respect u if you are well packaged but empty head. madam toke knows that card and she is playing it very well.

Will anyone even pay her mind if she say she do presentation for queens college,NY? As soon as she mentions NYU, everybody dey say she don hammer. It could just be presentation organized by the African student society in the school. Nothing big. Nothing to write home about. She is just an ordinary visitor. I can even go make present to NYU African student organization.

All in all, the girl the try. Na hustler…

My dear, as a guest of the Association for African Development at NYU, that would have been better. And we would have gotten emails. But this was by an adjunct professor, to speak to 4 students. She shouldn’t have made all that “noise”.

I’m really upset with the whole Professor TM hashtag. I’m a PhD student in UK, I teach undergraduate/masters student and I know the long road to becoming a professor. Just because Toke got an invite to speak to a couple of students – she calls herself a professor. Toke fear God o!

lmao @ ‘Toke fear God’.I guess she didn’t anticipate it…NIgerians are everywhere, you just can’t outsmart them, especially those in diaspora, cuz you’ll definetely get caught with those lies and fakeness.

Buky, right there on her IG page, with the caption ‘Shine on’ she writes, “…hype yourself, sell your market” and that explains what you call ‘blowing things out of proportion’.
I relate most of her ‘announcements’ to that belief that she has. To her, every things is hyping and marketing. Is it noisy? Yes. Is it working? I think, Yes.

    • I See

      April 20, 2017 at 11:16 pm

That was AFTER her lies were exposed. Hype yourself? Well if you claim you have $10 billion in the bank, IRS will look into your case and you can “sell your market” without lies, but that’s really all Toke has to sell. Is it working? I guess time will tell. I am also guessing you think “Yes” just by Toke hyping and selling what’s not there. Toke lives a bleached, wigs, butt pads, fake designer, first class and IG filtered life just press people like you. The sad truth is that if she or any family got sick today and needed $20k to save their life, they would not make it. Meanwhile she has sold that market of rich woman on IG, trust me that is no life. Julius Agwu needs to write a book people like you and Toke should invest in if you both can read. Selling a false narrative and waiting the resources to paint a picture that isn’t there just to impress total strangers is no way to live life.

Please this is just an innocent question o, I don’t really do snapchat or instagram. There’s this guy that dresses like a lady, Bobrisky. Looking at these pictures, I can see some semblance. Are they related, I mean Toke and Bobrisky?

  26. Girl STOP

    April 21, 2017 at 4:16 am

I used to always defend this chick but her thirst for fame is insatiable and rather unbecoming (pun intended). She hyped this whole thing up as though NYU itself invited her to speak. Hash tagging TM to the world and some crap, & wouldn’t stop talking (bragging) about it on snap chat. Then when she finally gets ousted on it, the person becomes a hater? Are u kidding me? Why do Nigerians feel they don’t need to be held accountable for their bullshit? You brought this upon yourself m’aam. I believe she even made a poster ‘Toke takes on NYU’ or some crap. I understand self love & being your own cheerleader and all but there’s a very thin line between cheering yourself on and downright LYING to make yourself appear bigger than you actually are. Who is she fooling? Oh yea! That’s right! Gullible Nigerians cos people with sense can see right through her whole display of thirst! It seems like she suffers from some kinda complex. I can’t place a finger on it yet. At this point, people can only begin to ponder about the authenticity of that book. After all, she was a relationship expert until her situation came to light. With all that she claims to have happened to her, one will think she would sit down and be humble (in d great words of Kendrick Lamar). I’m all for making the most out of every situation & I respect her hustle but for goodness sakes chile, STOP LYING!

So much bitterness and unnecessary anger ? Y’ll should calm down. It was an accomplishment for her, whether 5 people or 50…she was invited to give a lecture of some sort and the Lecture took place in a room in NYU.
So sickened from all the unnecessary venom poured out at this lady because people are uncomfortable and even jealous of her . Take a chill pill, eat a snicker and drink a Pepsi..she didn’t beat you or your family or force you to listen to the lecture..

    Oh my Nigerians.
Reading all these comments I am so ashamed to be called Nigerian. I suppose one of your biggest traits is jealousy. Live and let live abeg!

If it’s not a big deal to most of you, it is a big deal to her. She did not say the number of people she lectured. All you PhD and masters students that lecture in the U.K. and on the moon it is part of your curriculum but lecturing isn’t the norm for toke hence she celebrated it. Don’t you get it? if I was told to be a traffic wardens on a tiny street in a reputable city, for one day – be sure that I will celebrate it.

When I was younger and lived in Nigeria I wrote a book and by the time my school mates were done with me I wished I had never written my small story book. They bullied me, called me all sorts, said my mates are writing giants novels and just hated me for noooooo reason – or so I thought. Now that I’m grown I now understand that it was just jealousy. I suppose these jealous people grew up and here they are.

    My gosh guys. Unbelievable! Shocking!.

    I’m out!
