The police in Saudi Arabia have detained a woman who was featured in a Snapchat video that went viral because she was wearing a mini skirt and a crop-top as she strolled through a Saudi city.

The incidence which has quickly raised a lot of controversies on social media has led both to people coming to her defence and people wanting her to be put on trial.

According to CNN, the woman’s midriff top and mini skirt attire were in violation of the country’s strict dress code for women. In Saudi Arabia, women are required to wear an abaya, which is loose-fitting clothing and cover their hair.

Some people on Twitter called the woman brave and accused Saudi Arabia of hypocrisy for celebrating the beauty of foreign women while belittling that of its own citizens.

In this tweet posted by Presidency of the Commissions for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (@PvGovSa) stated that the agency was looking into the video and would take necessary steps to address the situation.

culture is culture, unlike some of us in Africa that have destroyed our culture in the name of vogue or religion, there are those that treasure culture. ”When in Rome, behave like a Roman”. I’ve heard this phrase since i was a a child and it still applies apparently so she should face the consequences of cat walking in inappropriate clothes.

“culture is culture, unlike some of us in Africa that have destroyed our culture in the name of vogue or religion”

You do realize that this “culture” you are praising for not being bastardized by religion along with the Saudi law which dictates that women should wear an Abaya in public have roots in and were both influenced by the Quran right?

Exactly it’s not even their culture. Middle Eastern used to have the most beautiful variant and accepting cultures till Mohammed went on a tirade to become a religious conqueror.. The not even Arab they have they own native language before Arabic that shows they true culture. This recent religions just came and wiped out so many cool languages, tribes and actual people’s cultures.

“The not even Arab they have they own native language before Arabic that shows they true culture.”

Arabic was widespread in that region prior to the coming
of Mohammed and Islam. It predates Islam by hundreds if not thousands of years.

@mama zee – You can drive a car if you want. You can apply for a passport and travel or even just go around town without the permission of a male guardian (who could be your little brother) if you want. Even if there are objections, you can probably pursue the career of your choice if you really want to. Despite all the many challenges women in Nigeria face, compared to Saudi women you have a lot of freedoms and are entitled to more. Sadly you’ve failed to use your right to freely express your thoughts to empathize with your fellow woman who in the grand scheme of things hasn’t harmed anyone.

The same Saudi men that basically vacation in strip clubs in the US and Europe are the ones enforcing unreasonably high standards on Saudi women back home. Hypocrisy.

Years ago, I read of young girls who were ordered back into a burning building to properly cover-up because of what you thoughtlessly term culture. Some of them that had escaped, died as a result.

I’m not saying they should suddenly have women or men for that matter walking the streets half naked in the name of fashion, but I’m unwilling to rush to condemn anyone that peacefully pushes the boundaries in protest. At the very least, that country needs to have a conversation about how they treat women.

You see, my take on this is simple: live and let live.
I have seen covered up Muslim women complaining of being discriminated against or been ‘assaulted’ in more accepting societies e.g. the lady with the burqua at a beach in France.
So, Muslims want ‘open’ societies to accept their women in their abayas, burquas and hijabs but will not let others wear what they like in their countries?
Nah, respect is both ways, if not, the one becomes the fool.

I agree with your phrase ” When in Rome people should behave like a Roman”. The reason I would not travel to a country that I cannot where a trouser or skirt and I don’t mean mini skirt because I don’t wear mini skirt but midi skirt, I also need to be able to leave my hair out because heat and not have it covered. Maybe it is time for the European governments and other countries to ban women wearing full burka to cover their faces. Every country has it’s own right to put down a law.
I watched a UK documentary on TV where this woman dress in full burka was telling an English reporter to “go and put some clothes on”. She was wearing a knee length sleeveless dress. You are in her country for goodness sake. If you’re not happy with with she was wearing, maybe it’s time you go back to your own country to avoid seeing people dress this way.

They have some of the most beautiful women in the world.Yet they men be pedophillic gay DL. You know why?… Cause they stupid instead of valuing the most beautiful thing God ever created a woman and her beautiful silhouette they demonize it now they all cursed with thinking everything but they drop dead gorgeous women beautiful. See why men shouldn’t control what women do with their body cause it’s always going to be a disservice to them.

I like to respect people cultures but you have to call bullsh!t where bullish!t is. This bull all you see is her leg and she just dey waka … I want them to arrest every Saudi man that wear short sleeve shirt and hair out too. Their biceps and hair should be covered. MEN always thinking they the only ones that can get tempted like man was not created for woman too. Stupid misogynistic religions … Last I check it is man that comes out a woman’s womb not the other way around of women coming out of men ribs…And we all don’t want to see parts of you that have us fantasizing too yeah cover your idiotic yet gorgeous faces too.

Good intention. Poor execution and follow through.
Challenge Saudi norms all you want but make sure you’re in safe territory when it goes down.

She got herself arrested for challenging ideas that will not change till Jesus returns. She could at least have covered her face.

And when someone like Chimamanda will talk some people will want to eat her raw. They think it’s only marriage that’s the issue, when it gets to the point where a woman can’t do anything, go anywhere or just be themselves without a “penis” consent then we should be worried.

Her bravery will get her killed. Her bravery won’t change shit. She’s so foolish for trying to practice western culture in a strict Arab nation like Saudi Arabia.
