Herdsmen Killings: FG warns against Incendiary Comments & Finger Pointing - BellaNaija

Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government has appealed to the media and public commentators to exercise utmost restraint in their coverage of the fallouts of the recent Fulani herdsmen killings in Benue.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, who made the appeal in a statement in Abuja on Saturday, cautioned against “incendiary comments, unrestrained use of pictures and footages that offended human sensibilities” in the coverage of the crisis.

The Minister also cautioned against “finger pointing” that could exacerbate the situation and complicate ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to end the crisis

He stressed that the media and commentators should be cautious of their coverage in order not to further inflame passion and worsen the situation.

Mohammed said that the Government is working hard to address the situation with a view to preventing a recurrence, not just in Benue State but everywhere across the country.

”Lest we are misunderstood, we are neither saying the media should not cover the crisis nor asking public commentators to desist from commenting on it. All we are saying is that both must be circumspect. The current poisoned atmosphere of incendiary comments, unrestrained use of pictures and footages that offend human sensibilities as well as finger pointing can only exacerbate the situation and complicate ongoing efforts to end the crisis,” he said.

The Minister said that the Government was saddened by the loss of lives and the destruction of property resulting from the crisis.

He recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari, in commiserating with the Benue Governor, unreservedly condemned the killings.

He said the President had also assured of the necessary security measures to prevent further attacks and bring the perpetrators to book.

Mohammed said the Government had mapped out short and long-term solutions to the incessant clashes, including a planned conference of stakeholders.

He assured of the government’s strong determination to find a lasting solution to the farmers/herders’ clashes.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in May 1976 to gather and distribute news on Nigeria and cover events of interest to Nigeria at the international level for the benefit of the Nigerian Media and the Public.

A politician will always be one. Offcourse he has not lost any relative in these killings so talk becomes cheap. The problem with us is the quick sense of protecting our interest regardless of how it may ruin others.

Alhaji O’Lyingwola Mohamed you and those who sent you to talk crazy like that are all out of your respective minds. How many Nigerians has to die in the hands of the Fulani herdsmen before our “yeye” government will fish out those responsible? We will as a Nation. continue to point accusing fingers to those Fulani herdsmen. Weather you and President Buhari like it or not.. Please, remind him ( President Buhari ) election is coming. We know exactly what to do.. The same fingers you’re asking us not to point to the Fulani herdsmen, will be used to kick him ( President Buhari ) out of office you idiot. A word is enough for the wise. I’m just saying.

Alhaji Laid Mohammed, nobody knows your government will be like this when you were there condemning Jonathan’s administration in those days. My advice to you and the president Mohammadu Buhari is that you should not expect any vote from Benue and the other state that herdsmen are operating, I could say the entire north central states if Buhari is renominated as a presidential canditate for the ruling party in 2019. Mark it down so that you should not said you were not told, a word is enough for the wise.

In addition pls, I have never in my life seen where owns a community in Benue state, the major tribes in the state are River and Idoma, we dont even have minority tribes in Benue, why is it that fulani cattle rearer has become one of the tribe in Benue today, if you people dont war, quietly ask fulani to leave Benue before it gets out hand, thank you Laid Mohammed.

He is actually right on this. I have seen people posting and sharing images from other attacks and representing them as the herdsmen.

Also have we truly determined these are herdsmen not criminals posing as herdmen? Or even Fulani? And the police officers who are selling their guns?

We do need to be careful how we tell these stories.

Brainless twit. It is only a foolish sinful government that does not know that one killing begets another. Buhari-Osinbajo administration has become synonymous with bloodletting and blame-shifting.

Tunmi, go sleep. If it’s medication for common sense or illness affecting your brain go and take it. Stop coming online embarrassing yourself. Your point is stupid. Fulani killing people is nothing new. This has been going on for years, the villagers, people are the ones feeling the pain. It’s just recent there’s uproar about it.
The Fulani herdsmen are not even denying murdering others, so what’s your point.

Suddenly, you can’t point out the insidious actions, and outrageous actions.. no you dare not point out their fault. Instead of making corrective actions, they expend their energy complaining or threatening people

Buhari and this administration is a disgrace, regret, and the biggest mistake ever. The only thing I’m happy about is that Nigerians and everyone all over the world can see how incompetent Buhari is. A heartless, wicked, selfish, bullying group of people. Always defending foolishness. Lai Mohammed has to be the worst human being ever. El Rufai, a devil in disguise, Buhari, a sneaky snake.

Northerner Muslim put themselves first. They will fight and defend their own before anyone. The only time they see themselves as Nigerians is to embezzle money. Other than that, they are Hausa, Fulani, Kanuri, nupe etc

Sorry no. But I have been reading Facebook posts from Nigerians in Nigeria and it is alarming how they share speculations and false images and spread lies. Seriously.
