South African Royalty Weds: Zulu Princess Bukhosibemvelo marries her Sweetheart in Durban

Growing up, we would see photos from weddings of European aristocrats and royalty in issues of Hello. Well, as you know, we have our African royals from various tribes in countries across Africa. You might or might not agree with the relevance of ‘royalty’ in today’s world but wedding photos are always fun to look at, so why not. Zulu Princess Bukhosibemvelo tied the knot with Business Executive Sipho Nyawo. The 24 year old bride who is a beautician married Nyawo who is currently a director of Amathonga Institute, which helps emerging entrepreneurs in South Africa.

The wedding was held in Durban, South Africa – the religious blessing was held at Ntuzuma Full Gospel Community Church and the reception was at the Durban Botanical Gardens. Given the size of the bride’s family, it was no surprise that the wedding was attended by hundreds of family members and well-wishers. The bride’s father King Zwelithini has 37 children – 22 sons and 15 daughters while her mother Queen Mantfombi is Swazi King Mswati III’s sister. Guests at the event included South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma, the country’s first ladies; Sizakele Khumalo, Nompumelelo Ntuli and Thobeka Mabhija, IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi, Swaziland’s royal family and Nigerian chiefs Adolf Omobude and Osawe Joseph.

The bride looked absolutely resplendent in her intricate strapless wedding dress, the ivory dress with its pleated bust and sparking embellishments was stunning. Her accessories and bouquet of spring roses really stood out as well. The bride’s dress was designed by Johannesburg designer Julian, while the groom wore a grey Giorgio Armani suit with black lapels. Love the outdoorsy spring feel of the wedding! Congrats to the couple.

  • africhika August 27, 2009 at 2:03 am

hmmmmm…. he looks like Bishop Desmond Tutu

  • KK August 27, 2009 at 3:46 am

these pictures only reinforce the fact Nigerians are the most stylish set of people on this continent.

  • tope August 27, 2009 at 4:10 am

  • Nma August 27, 2009 at 12:30 pm

    The bride is 24 ke?!!!

  • Cynthia August 27, 2009 at 1:52 pm

@ KK, naaa, I totally disagree that Naijas are the most stylish in Africa. You guys can be just as over the top and if not, more over the top than the rest of us! Her dress is beautiful, love the intricate designs but yes I do agree that there seems to be a lot going on. Sometimes simplicity can be just as glam and elegant.
Is she really 24? I think BN you mean to say 34! And the groom, how old is he? Looks over 40! Is this wife no…??!!
They seem to have the polygamy thing going on ;-))

  • Bimpe August 27, 2009 at 9:00 pm

Her dress is pretty tight though! :)

  • Suzanna Efiok August 28, 2009 at 2:16 pm

I agree with everyone that she had way too much going on, simplicity can really place the spotlight on elegance. Love her hair do and understated makeup. And as per her age being 24, I think that might be a misquote because that my beautiful sister is smack dap in the southern middle of 30 and 40. I love to see couples marrying at a mature age, it beautiful, inspiring and encouraging especially in a culture where people seem to have a time limit set for when people should get marry or retire into spinsterhood. And note I didn’t say bachelorhood lol

  • KK August 28, 2009 at 2:48 pm

polygamy is nothing for these royal zulus. so i will not be surprised.
cynthia, i still naijas top the style chart. i have been around the continent and my opinion is based first hand observation.
for the class of the Zulu King,if this was a Nigerian equivalent, these pics will be littered with Naija man and women setting trends and making bold fashion statements. Not one of these pics stand out style wise, apart from the bride.

Peeps on Bella Naija will never stop! The lady had a beautiful wedding, her dress was beautiful etc… She and her husband look very in love. Why focus on her age?

  • Cocoa blosh August 29, 2009 at 4:20 pm

I hate when brides tack up their wedding outfits!!! she is pretty, her dress is gorgeous but u cnt rly see non of dat coz she has over accessoried

  • Cocoa blosh August 29, 2009 at 4:23 pm

    typo error.. meant over accessorised

  • luvlife August 29, 2009 at 7:03 pm

Na lie!!!….lol! j.k. but it is kinda hard to believe even if that’s what the website says

  • jbaby August 30, 2009 at 3:02 am

thank you oh. just to add we r so critical when it comes to non nigerians. which is so bad. seriously the hatin is gettin too much. lets see ur own wedding all u bloody haters.

  • ProudlyNaija August 30, 2009 at 3:15 pm

No one would have focused on her age if it was not stated as 24 when she looks otherwise. It is not uncommon for people to lie about their age. It was infact common in the 60s and 70s for people to have an offical age and a true age. Furthermore, stating the obvious is not hating or being critical.

  • kay September 1, 2009 at 1:33 am

not too late to say happy marriage

  • Kemchi September 1, 2009 at 9:40 pm

    My sentiments exactly!

  • Chiangel September 2, 2009 at 1:32 am

You know what? She does look 24 to me. I must comment on the accessories; it’s a bit much. If I was there I would rip off that little jacket she’s wearing, take off two of the hair deco, and give her just a single pearl necklace.

  • tiana September 2, 2009 at 4:34 am

Ok y’all stop hating. Just becoz it’s not a nigerian thing y’all have to hate. It’s getting too much indeed. She dressed the way she felt she should. It’s her wedding, her day and her choice. Y’all wait till ur wedding and exhibit ur own style. Stop criticizing. Even if she chose to wear tones of jewelry it is none of our business. We r all free to make our wedding day what we want to make of it as long as it makes us happy.

  • McFashion September 7, 2009 at 7:54 pm

The design of Giorgio Armani is always great. He can design everything – appartments, houses, mobile phones, but he is best in dresses

  • Suzanna Efiok September 15, 2009 at 3:43 pm

Nobody has been malicious in their statements or unduly personal in their criticism but people will have varying opinions and should be allowed to state it OBJECTIVELY without being accused of “hating.” She is a public figure and therefore will be subject to scrutiny more than most so please, leave people alone to speak their minds. It has nothing to do with Nigeria or South Africa. Nobody has outright insulted the lady but people disagree with some of her aethetic choices and most certainly with the reports on her age and self expression is a God given right just like you have expressed your obvious disdain for our opinions.

  • Beautiful September 23, 2009 at 2:59 pm

I think she looks beautiful, and her dress if just perfect. It’s HER wedding and I do believe she has the RIGHT to any look she wants on HER day. When it’s OURS, then WE can look any old way WE want to, without giving a hoot what others think. So like a sister (I hope it’s a sister) said earlier, we should let her be and focus on our own happy days whenever that may be or was. As to her age, why should she lie?, she’s a public figure as rightly put, and believe me if it was’nt true, there’ll be one dissident in the kingdom, somewhere, who will snitch to the press. As prince Wiliam and Harry’s birthdays and dates are known to literarily half the world’s population, that’s how it is with other Royals around the world. Let her be. It’s a lovely wedding, nice coverage and we wish them happiness in their marriage.

  • Beautiful September 23, 2009 at 3:04 pm

We’re also forgetting that her father does’nt look a day above 50, (handsome guy, I’ll ditch the groom and marry him anyday). So when did he have her, at 15?. This is to those of you that say she is much older that 24.

  • prinz October 4, 2009 at 1:46 am
