Are Nigerians Returning from the US, UK Helping or Hurting Nigeria? Battabox Asks | Watch the Video on BN
Posted on Monday, February 4th, 2013 at 6:57 AMBy Adeola Adeyemo
The outflow of Nigerians to other more developed countries in search of jobs, quality education, better living standards and more has for several decades, caused a “brain drain” in the economy. Following the economic recession in most countries such as the United Kingdom where lots of Nigerians relocated to, there has been a shift in the trend as many Nigerians returned back home.
The question Battabox is asking this time is – What do Nigerians who have remained in the country think about their return? Are those returning home helping or hurting the country?
They went to the streets to seek the opinion of Nigerians and came up with a range of responses. While some people think they impact positively on the Nigerian culture and economy, others think their return is rather harmful to the economy.
Watch the video below and tell us what you think. Are Nigerians returning from the US, UK helping or hurting Nigeria?

This is so dumb!!! The question, most of the responses. #Ignorance. So coming back to their own country is a crime, right? Whoever is in charge of battabox needs a rethink! You interview the same set of people, every time you hit the streets! Why on earth wouldn’t you get such ridiculous responses that that never cut across every class of people? This is sheer ignorance. Also, when you start paying competent personnel, I’m sure you’ll have something interesting and thought-provoking for everyone to appreciate!
Err..I dont see anything wrong in what has been said. If you think Battabox is crap, create your own and let us see.
And everyone is entitled to an opinion regardless of class so pls dont discriminate and just so u knw, the people here represent the majority.
WHAT MAJORITY?
The guy in yellow towards the end made the most sense…
Pls mr Steve watch the video again…. Yes some were off point but alot of them made valid points. Reading ur response dont even make any sense. Why dont u contribute to do question of discussion rather than criticise pple. -!!!
This makes me miss Nigeria sooooo musshhh. Anyways, how come they never asked any females?
Women weren’t asked probably because they will shift the economic flow to romantic topic…U know too many women haven’t seen their AWAY HUSBANDs for ages…they will all chorus “let them come back”. Lol.
Silly question to pose at random. This is a tricky question which ought first be put in perspective.
Nigeria is still too hungry to have adventurers who travel for the heck of it. Folks are timing their pregnancies and visas to give their kids a better opportunity so that they can at least dodge all this visa-wahala. It’s all about improving ur chances for survival! and if the wind blows west…or back home..
on the other hand, regular Naija-bound folk without a hope of getting out there and who are “at the mercy of the police” are watching some privileged few make these trips, return with snotty accents (and attitudes to boot), and then take up what choice bits are available…
it’s just a sad state of affairs this we country is in. folks wud rather take up menial jobs abroad knowing their taxes will be used as intended and their rights protected than stay in ur fatherland where u are reminded everyday that anything goes, ur death at the hands of some maniacal zealot is just a bl**dy statistic, justice is at a price and u can’t rely on anything – only hope that u, too, go hammer one day and by whatever means.
silly question. smh.
So on point!!!!!!!
I Like, like, like…..BN, Pls help with a like button. Thanks.
I totally agree with you. The way foreign students were treated while I was in camp was really troubling. They are given special treatments , posted to better places, given exeats from camp for stupid reasons.
It’s just naija dem no send whether na yeye school the person go provided its a foreign degree
I totally agree with @Steve, This is is a very dumb question because I do not know how well-educated Nigerians who have garnered academic and work experience abroad will make the Nigerian economy worse. The Nigerian economy is already worse and as for me coming back to use those skills will actually better the economy. I’ve lived in the UK for 8 years and I’ve decided to come back home and do what I can with my skills. In 5 of those years I’ve been in the recruitment sector and if I think recruiting graduates from universities to work with no bias will help the unemployed graduates out there, how is that going to make your economy worse. I think to ask that question is totally dumb and has no basis as those that are being asked do not even have the educational experience nor the work ethic a Nigerian in diaspora would have.
india’s economy exploded after those who left for the states and uk in the 80′s and 90′s began to return……………….without having a family member abroad most families would have been in the abiss…………..we have seen the evidence in the music industry and beyond…….when people travel and return…….the want to be different…………..and the inject good things in the econy……….pascal dozie of diamond bank, ben bruce, dangote, mike adenuga, dele momoduof ovation…….all of this people travel abroad to gain something good and bring it back to the country and improve the countries image……
watch me as i return, i will not hurt but help the country. Brain gain is good. I think us coming back brings a good moral and ethical backbone that most nigerians raised in nigeria lack. I think we understand the power of working together and community. We understand that the youth has a voice and we understand do it yourself mentality. Am not saying some nigerians dont have it, but i think we understand what it means to help others selflessly. We are coming back with a mission to help our country start on the path of getting to where it needs to be. After all we went abroad to learn and bring back what we have learned to share with you all. We dont do the fantasy world thing of believing God will provide by dashing common pastors our hard earned money to pray for us, we pray for ourselves and use the money to do more productive things. For us expartriate, at least for me, i dream is to finish with school and come home and find away to help, not to hurt.
Very thought provoking! I have never been to nigeria even though both my parents were born there and came to the UK in the eighties. I haven’t been allowed there because of ‘family problems’ lol but now that I’m older I would love to live and work there. If I was to go, I would be bringing my skills and qualifications and helping Nigeria into a richer economy because it has so much potential but that potential cannot be tapped if there isn’t educated people in place.
@ Steve the question isn’t dumb and do interviewed audience too minor to represent the thots of 150m people. @ linabella i had all of my education in naija except MA and proud to say I have a good work ethic and attend a church where u are taught to pray by yourself (covenant) I do appreciate the exposure I gained during MA study but my foundation was laid in naija.
The bottomline is Nigerians anywhere in the World have the right to go to Nigeria whenever they choose, because it is their God given heritage. What makes the difference is do the Nigerians that have had the opportunity to explore other continents come back with the foal and mindset of adding value to their country and to help make a positive difference? Or is their goal to bring the ‘rubbish’ from other from other parts of the world to add to some of the ‘rubbish’ already present in Nigeria? And to drain the country their own selfish gain? If its the first then it helps, if the second then it harms. I am not sure what the current statistics is, but there’s a mix of help and harm going on from what I know.
Typo** What makes the difference is do the Nigerians that have had the opportunity to explore other continents come back with the *goal* and mindset of adding…
So ,we should remain outside now? Stay there, work like dogs and be sending money home for them to squash? The country belongs to all of us!
Well I don’t think its hurting Nigeria par say. Though it has its very minor disadvantage cos really when they landed the excessive fake life began. Not saying they are all fake just think that’s when it increased, probably cos those that were here had some sort of complex. Even radio stations now hire mostly peeps who have British or American accent, that’s a lot of pressure for some category of people. (even them peeps that are not good radio personalities too are employed, like the Cool fm’s news personality)
Aside from that, I have mostly seen very positive influences like,
1. having fun in other ways other than drinking and clubbing.
2. We now express ourselves more politically (case u don’t know, na dem help do am)
3. Having better valued competitors at the work place
4. Creating awareness in terms of foreign investments
At the end of the day, the recession had its good sides. cos if not for the recession, dem no for sack all of them commot
uchenna, i believe the second is the case….
After spending time and money getting a degree from an ivy league school, you bet your dollars I expect to stand out and get a plush job anywhere, including in Nigeria.
hay ny chic if i had gone to ivy league shools and used the american system to get their of course i would definitely go home and or try to get a job anywhere. as the HR people see ivy league,VOILA,you will get the job. especially if the HR person graduated from an ivy league college. its a smart move.
