BN Red Carpet Fab: House of Nwocha ‘Zion’ Fashion Show

On Sunday 24th October 2010, designer Ugonna Omeruo, the creative head of Nigerian fashion label, House of Nwocha celebrated her debut headline fashion show. The label launched in 2008 and has shown collections at various events including the Ovation Red Carol 2009 and the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria 2010 Pre-Show. Prior to the event, the Zion collection lookbook had exclusively premiered on and this event was an opportunity for House of Nwocha to shine and for guests to experience the collection in its full glory.

The event was compered by Ify Ejikeme, a reality TV star and TV presenter who featured in the Big Brother Nigeria reality show and OC Ukeje, an actor who won the Amstel Malta Box Office competition in 2006. The event kicked off with a collection preview runway show by MAI featuring Menswear from the label. Then the agenda moved on to the main event. The presentation of the Zion collection.

Models strutted down the runway in the bold pink, blue  and red pieces with their hair presented in a unique horn-like style. The collection consisted almost entirely of dresses – long, short, ruffled and embellished. Our favourite pieces were actually those which deviated from the dominant pink and blue palette. The floor-length red strapless dress with an embellished side detail was our pick. Taking a cue from international couture shows, the collection closed with the ‘bride’, the final piece was a dramatic pink and blue gown with a full tulle skirt and embellished fitted top. Other highlights of the event include M.I‘s performance and the unveiling of MBGN 2002, Chinenye Ochuba-Akinlade as the new Face of HON.

View the collection below and check out the BN Red Carpet Fab for the event.

Former beauty queen, Chinenye Ochuba-Akinlade was announced as the Face of HON at the event and she stood out in a floor-length asymmetrical draped gold dress with an embellished shoulder detail. She completed her look with the accessory of the season – a turban.

Chinenye Ochuba-Akinlade

Photographer Eleanor Goodey has quite conservative style but she always makes it look chic rather than frumpy. Just goes to show that you don’t need to show skin to be sexy. Eleanor rocked black trousers with a long-sleeved embellished white blouse. She accessorized with a beautiful feathered hair piece and pearl pink shoes.

Eleanor Goodey

Why do we keep featuring Eku Edewor? Because she always looks fabulous on the red carpet. The Studio 53 Extra presenter has to attend all the top events for her job but she always manages to bring something refreshing to the table. At the House of Nwocha event, she went for city chic by pairing a white shirt with black shorts and all black accessories.

Eku Edewor

All we have to say is this – ‘SHOES’. Nike Adegite rocked some seriously hot heels at the HON event. Her all black outfit allowed others aspects of her look such as the shoes, her bold coif and red lippie to shine through.

Nike Adegite

Simple yet interesting look from Nwando Ozobia.  Ivory and black is always a winning combination.

Nwando Ozobia

Though the HON event was a daytime event, some guests went for evening looks. Laide Agbaje wore a strapless dress with a layered shirt. She accessorized with a pearl necklace and python heels. Her front braid hairstyle added an interesting dimension to her look.

Laide Agbaje

Sometimes, a simple dress with an interesting detail is all it takes to be red carpet ready. Dayo Balogun wore a shift dress with ruffled details, she paired her dress with red shoes to match her red nails and earrings as well.

Dayo Balogun

LBD, layered necklace, metallic heels and standout clutch. It works!

Ifenyiwa Okoli

We already analyzed this look in BN Pick Your Fave this week. Lillian Unachukwu rocked this Karen Millen dress and she rocked it well.

Lillian Unachukwu

Lola Maja knows what works for her body type. The beauty entrepreneur always accentuates her figure with waist clinching belts and corsets. This fitted flower print black dress is another winning look from Lola.

Lola Maja-Okojevoh

Simple and chic by Biola Esaro.  Biola’s outfit is very event appropriate and she rocks it well.

Biola Esaro

While Ada went for an all black look, Toyin mixed things up in a bronze top paired with dark bootcut jeans and a tan clutch.

Ada Olieajunwa & Toyin Badeyi

Noble Igwe of was looking rather dapper at the HON event. His navy blue suit with white piping paired with a pink shirt and black shoes had an upscale nautical feel. Overall, a good look from Nobs.

Noble Igwe

We love, love, love Jania Ochonogor‘s outfit, the ruffled white shirt and the blue trousers. Wish she had gone with a different coloured bag though.

Jania Ochonogor

If you read BN often, you will know we have an extreme fixation with the colour yellow! We love it. So vibrant and beautiful! Bisola Kamson looks gorgeous in this yellow top paired with a black skirt and sandals. Her checkered clutch is a great addition to the look.

Bisola Kamson

Lots of popping colour from Ijeoma Aso. She paired her fitted watercolour dress with nude pumps.

Ijeoma Aso

Linda Mesrob is almost always in jeans. However, she keeps things interesting with bright coloured tops and bold accessories. Her  purple asymmetric top paired with jeans and a large necklace is a great casual glam look. Her bewelled ‘snake’ sandals completed the look.

Linda Mesrob

Jennifer Obayuwana clearly loves fashion and we love her ‘take no prisoners’ attitude to fashion. Jennifer wore a dress from Lanre DaSilva-Ajayi’s summer 2010 collection. She paired it with a black multi zip Burberry hobo bag and a pair of red statement heels.

Jennifer Obayuwana

Designer, Ugonna Omeruo rocked a pink and blue dress from her new collection. The dramatic shoulders and the embellished bib detail  ensures that she stands out. She completed her look with blue pumps and a red carpet ready pink pout.

Ugonna Omeruo

Lowla Adamson wore a House of Nwocha dress. The layered neckline and short hemline accentuated her petite frame.

Lowla Adamson

NJ Omeruo rocked a dramatic purple cocktail dress by House of Nwocha.

NJ Omeruo

Sometimes, we associate the colour – grey – with weekdays at the office. However, these ladies show that you can make it work during the weekend. Note the use of the colour red at add a splash of vibrancy to the looks.

Caroline Forchaw

Aisha Shaba

Toyin Ogunjobi

Femi Atilade

On the Lagos red carpets, we see lots of ‘pretty’, lots of ‘sexy’- now we get to see something different. Ene Maya Lawani gives us Morticia Addams-esque ‘gothic chic’. The long centre parted hair, the smoky eye makeup, the red lips, the long draped dress along with the red heels and clutch!

Ene Maya Lawani

RED! The colour of passion. Wana and Ify rocked floor-length red dresses while Keye added a touch of red to her relaxed glam look.

Wana Sambo

Ify Ejikeme

Keye Oladipo

Uju Murphy & Shawn Simmons both wore long fishtail skirts with  bold detailing.

Uju Murphy

Shawn Simmons

Damola and Adeola went for long dresses with girly details such a bold pink flower for Damola and a red bow belt for Adeola.

Damola Adebanjo

Adeola Obagun

Wow! Dimeji Alara grabbed the spotlight in this Balmain-eque jacket with its pronounced bold shoulder detail. Great colour palette for the overall look. Love the mix of earth tones with the black shirt and blue shoes.

Dimeji Alara

At this point, Adebayo Oke-Lawal has defined his style.  Quirky and interesting with some African flair. The gladiator sandals add a new dimension to his look.

Adebayo Oke-Lawal

These ladies – Tari, Fafi, Tinuke and Yvonne looked good in a variety of short, feminine looks.

Tari Ekiyor

Onyinye Fafi Obi

Tinuke Akande

Yvonne Ochuba

‘African contemporary’ from Gideon, Frank, Henry and Uche.

Gideon Okeke

Frank Edoho

Henry Spragga

Uche Ezeamama

Ohimai Atafo presented his menswear collection for MAI at the event. MAI is pushing the envelope as per menswear on the Nigerian scene. Sharp tailoring given an edge with the use of bold colours – Ohimai depicts that in his all green attire.

Opeyemi, Veronica and Anita made great use of colour and structure in their red carpet looks.

Opeyemi Awoyemi

This was actually one of our favourite looks at the House of Nwocha event! We used to have a thing against tights in Nigeria but when you think about it, we wear jeans, suits and blazers in Nigeria, why cant we wear tights. Jecintha Powell looked glamorous in her snakeskin print top paired with black tights and red accessories.

Jecintha Powell

Latasha, Gbemi, Juwon and Yvonne made excellent use of accessories to transform their looks from casual to glam.

lol…i loved the gbemi phillip’s look and the awoyemi girl, their clothes looked good on them. Seems eku edewor has only one style of clothes in her closet, shorts and shirt. *Noble Igwe’s ginormous head does not need to be in anything that fits closely around his neck. If he is so stylish he should know this. Play down the head by wearing v-neck shirts.
      * Chineye Ochuba aka mama africa, please dont attempt this look again, horrid. Shes too pretty for this.
      * Wana Sambo’s dress was cool and damola’s dress really fit her plus size figure
      * Dont get the Ene lawani look, i love goth but this look is not quite.
      * Dimeji Alara and Adebayo have been watching Tyra too much, they wanna be like miss jay, epic fail. They look hilarious.
      * Jecintha looks like an alien. Those stockings! come-on in naija heat!? Phew! Those are for colder climates, please dont be bush.

Oh one question, since Eku’s friends at BN have nicely helped her rep by pointing out that she’s at all these events for “work” then why don’t we see HALF as many photographs of Dolapo Oni? Just asking…

    That is all… xxxo

    • CC

      October 28, 2010 at 12:36 pm

Dolapo only seems to do the in-studio segments and Eku is the one who covers events. So I think that’s why. Personally I think there should be more hosts from across the continent since its supposed to be a show for all Africa.

If I say what I really think now Bella won’t approve my comment, but I will say this, the men profiled here look like traders from Aba market who came to Lagos for the first time… from Noble to all of Mai’s angels, I’m just unimpressed.

the turn out was quite good.nigerians are not easy!!! at all !!! but meanwhile Mai is doing a great job.someone commented on the colours and the men looking like Aba traders, thats becos you dont understand fashion…most times the runway clothes may not look very wearable, but the essense is for you to admire the sewing and designs and craft.mai did a good job, infact i am very impressed.i dont know him but i know the young man is going places.THEN to house of nkwocha,in my honest oppinion, she needs to change her fabrik suppliar, the designs werent anything to write home about but the fabriks and texture made it worse.they screamed CHEAP.i have seen a couple of her clothes, they looked better.this was a disaster…she should understand that most times fabriks helps designs.i cant believe she brought all these pple together to show this????…wow..anyways i gues she will know how successful the night was by the volume of sales..that sif there were any!!.she can do better..that much i know…

    • CC

      October 28, 2010 at 3:25 pm

Fashion ko, couture ni…. bko I know when someone’s inspiration seems to be the Emeka Hondas and Eddy Mexdeez traders from Ariaria International market. He has shirts and pants in bright colors and wears pinks pants on top (yes on top) red shoes… Mai and his angels aren’t on the runway, they’re guests at an event… Then Noble always wears slim cut outfits when he’s not slim… makes him look like he needs to drop some lbs (which he doesn’t) then combines it with a schmedium blazer and ill fitting aviators showing off all that forehead, he looks like a trader too. Mbanu I don’t need to understand high fashion if it leaves the men looking like this…

Lord knows I’m sitting on my hands instead of writing about all ankle straps on some ladies making them look like they have cankles..

    • Peperempe

      October 28, 2010 at 4:10 pm

You’re just sitting on your hands? Hahahaha you’ve already typed it. You’re very funny and I take your point, but if your read the blurb you would’ve seen that MAI actually opened the show for Nwocha. So the models were dressed for the runway and MAI was going for a “colourful dandy” feel. the clothes look well made and men’s clothes are more difficult to make. Just compare them to the stuff Nwocha actually showed (in terms of finish).

On Noble I don’t think anyone was arguing with you, I’m sure even the guy himself will agree with you that he has no style.

Ene Lawani slayed that red carpet handsdown. watttttttt!!! that look is too bonzzzz.
the other are; wana sambo, lillian unachukwu and gecintha.
the worse are; atafo man and he’s groupies with all those colours. i mean..Jesus take the wheel..all those colours?? my eyes hurt.
as for ugonna’s runaway clothes..some are wearable..but the hair on models is a HAM
keep up the good work bella.

    October 28, 2010 at 3:04 pm

wana looked good, but Lawani killed it! The babe for kuku carry gun come this event mehn!!! I think MAI’s clothes are largely on point, even though the incredible hulk outfit he’s wearing is not the best. If he had worn a white shirt, he woulda been okay. I don’t think he expects people to wear all those colours together. The models are just styled that way to create an impression.

This Nwocha girls clothes look rather “cherubim & seraphim-ish” in my humble opinion. The colours are just not good and the quality of the fabrics is just BAD, to put it lightly. Unless one wants to go out looking like a mascot for Omo detergent, I don’t see how blue and pink is supposed to be a good combination.

    • deedoubleU

      October 28, 2010 at 10:15 pm

Blue and pink can actually be a good combination, it just depends on how u carry your self in it and the fabric that she used e.g.. silk , if it was a cotton fabric (pink+blue will look really cool)

  22. Aba made

    October 28, 2010 at 3:10 pm

I do not understand the current craze with translating women’s fashion into menswear. It is well known that women are quite happy to look ridiculous for the sake of fashion, and now men are taking up this “virtue” as well???

This mini rant is directed at Dimeji “reggie bush” Alara and that misguided garment he has on! WTF!

Gladiator sandals are mens wear. They were worn by Roman gladiators.

    • Peperempe

      October 29, 2010 at 10:35 am

@ Kilonsparkles roman gladiators lived how many years ago? The way men dress has changed a lot since then, no? I just do not get the current obsession with men trying to dress like women. Men carrying purses, wearing manty hose, sequins, make-up etcetera and it’s supposed to be cool? I’m sorry but I think a man should look like he bought his clothes tastefully, put them on and forgot completely about them. In other words, men shouldn’t look overly fussed-over.

Having said that everyone has a right to dress how they like, I also have a right to not be terribly impressed.

    • Kilonsparkles

      October 30, 2010 at 6:52 am

I wouldn’t call it dressing like women. Style changes but fashion is forever. Italian men still wear sandals, Irish men still wear kilts; my point is that it shouldn’t be such a big deal. A woman in a suit is cool but a man in male gladiator sandals is weird? It’s subject to personal opinion sha.

    DEAD at Cherubim and Seraphim.

The other day i posted on some new label’s entry about how while i applaud their efforts there was really nothing to see as its all the same thing we see from these designers and people got on my case about how they are just starting out and I should give them some leeway. Okay. But remember that you don’t give me a leeway on my checkbook when I come to buy your pieces.

I will at least applaud HON for the Styling of the Model’s Hair Pieces. NOW THOSE were conversation starters! I like that. But it all went down hill from there for me. The material…I’m not sure if the pictures did not do it justice…but it didn’t look…rich.. not rich as in wealthy but like luxurious… and well made… like this truly hand made and not by sura the tailor. The pictures made it look like cheap polyester satin from the market. It may have helped a bit it the dresses were steamed prior to walking the runway. For a lot of the dresses, especially the ones with the frills on the side it looked like the seams were scrunched up.
Now to the actual designs. I did have a few favorites that are quite wearable by the average woman who loves fashion. The Pink drapey top with the purple skirt and the floor length red dress with the sweet heart neckline. But for the most part i feel like the designs have been done of have been done in many variations and have been seen before. The Colors were quite garish. And if i could quote Michael Kors from this season of Project Runway, Color doesn’t have to be what ties a collection together. I don’t see the story here.
At some point you have to decide if you’re in the market as a pret-a-porter or haute couture designer. Then determine who it is you’re designing for, what kind of woman do you see wearing your designs. What do you want your clothes to say about her. And right now i don’t see that in this collection.
I am honestly not trying to be a bad belle. I can’t draw or sew a lick. But I love Clothes. And its from that love of clothes and fashion that i give my observations. I truly hope the designer sees the criticisms, takes it, evolves and grows even bigger and badder. I want HON pieces (If i can afford them LOL) that i can pull out 10 -15 years from now and give to my daughters to wear.
I mean i’m happy that african fashion in particular is receiving a lot of attention but doesn’t it say something to us when the african fabric it self is getting more attention than the designers themselves?

The tern NUDE is so misused these days. Nude is usually a colour that matches the skin colour of the wearer. So a white person’s nude would be a pale creamy sort of colour. A black person’s nude should be BROWN!

2 words for this collection CHEAP n CHEERFUL! As in seriously she can do WAY better than this. The clothes look razz + does she think she can present these designs on any international platform? Don’t evn let me get started on the fabric. Then u’ll come n say ur dress is 50k!!! Horrible construction, cheap fabric n tasteless designs. That’s d problm in nigeria we always want to fly b4 we can even crawl. Abroad u do an apprenticeship under a top designer 4 @least 5years b4 u even dream of opening up ur own fashion house. Mschew! MAI n his entourage are obviously auditioning 4 d circus….CLOWNS all of them! Meanyle it’s obvious that all of u going on about Eku Edewor always being on Bella Naija are just mad cuz d babe is HOT n making it. Her JOB requires her to be out n about n to be seen out n about. This is really funny, now everyone is a fashion critic. All i have to say is that I was at the event the pictures of Mai and his models were backstage pictures and not RED CARPET, it was all part of his amazing showcase that day which you guys didn’t see (And honestly bella you should have used the runway pictures and not the backstage ones). This same MAI has pushed fashion in Nigeria on was on BBC some weeks ago, guess the same ‘Oyibo” peeps you are all serving in Jand ot Yankie are appreciating his work. Colours! colours!! colours!!!, Oswald Boateng, Tom Ford to mention a few play with more colours than MAI but you dull peeps won’t say nada about that but when its your Nigeria person you open your need some breathmints mouth, when he begins to make a storm overseas then you will all start respecting and saying nice things and want to associate. If for some you reason you are not aware that alot of men apart from Kanye West wear bright coloured colours than wake up!!! Bella i suggest that you start editing more of the comments or very soon people will request for their events not to be put on your site, that way most of these jobless peeps will pay more attention to their 5 bucks an hour job. You guys are killing the joy of this site.

Commenting that Oyibo people dig his fashion and insinuating that them liking it makes him a good designer suggests that you are the one who serves them.

      November 1, 2010 at 10:19 am

I believe that they know more about fashion than Nigeria that claim, until we have blacks ruling the fashion world i stick to the point that they are better. And its the fashion experts in BBC or CNN that come pick people to speak with not a random ‘i think i know fashion set of people’ All designers want to be in New York, london, Milan Fashion weeks that stands for something and until Nigeria fashion week gets to that standard the oyibos are better. Period!!

Bells you are doing a fantastic job pls keep it up and dont let uptight people give you bad advice…freedom of speech my dear!

Whatever! I think Mai is handsome and his clothes well tailored! So maybe the green everything is a bit much for some but it’s fashion, it’s bold and at the end of the day it is well tailored clothing… Something that a lot of the newer designers lack!

    October 28, 2010 at 10:00 pm

Heuuu, I’ve never seen a group of people so hard to please like Nigerians. I mean come on, I thought the designs would actually hold ground on an international level but maybe not for Africans. Plus I agree the fabric does not look that good.
Now MAI, maybe he shouldn’t have worn that green top but his models look on point abeg, I loved how he played with colors and they all looked good.
If you have any constructive criticism, abeg say it with tact and stop being a hater, either you want to help or not.

You know as Nigerians, we attribute value to scarcity so let;s not commonize the poor girl.

    Natasha, in fact, o’dikwa risky

as far as the designs….hmmm, they look kinda cheap but i give her A for effort

Dimeji Alara, in fact you go dey sufficient IJN…

Adebayo Oke Lawal…when oyinbo is short of words, they say “wow” so yeah i say “wow” quick question, did you go to and literally ordered those sandals abi you just sneaked into your sisters shoe closet and jacked her sandals? Either way, you need some serious cleaning of sins, laying of hands and fresh annointing.

the clothes werent bad but i dint like wht chinenye ochuba wore.prob the fabric dint do her justice or sthin.generally the fabric dint do some of the designs good but ugonna is doing great. it takes a lot to actually be an entrepreneur and go out there publicizing your brand.she will def get better. as for mai, when i first saw wht he wore i was like wt?but as i looked further n saw his models i relaxed a bit.the color thingy wasnt bad but his own combo wasnt gud either.anyway well done bella naija.
@lala’s comment: i dont think BN should edit comments. there will always be critics as everyone’s tastes aint the same. also, people improve and become better by takin the right criticism.its left to the designer to judge wht she’l take or not.if you only want ‘yes men’ around you then u may be fallin in a pit.believe me i kno where im coming from.
    Nice job anyway

I think everyone has made very valid comments.
@pem: I have laughed so hard this sat morning, good for my system. MAI is very hot looking but i think he is getting to comfortable in his looks thats why he thinks he can pull of the lime look..
The event was a succes, well attended and effective buzz in place, however the creative design or inpute wasnt 50%, because if the same percentage put into organizing the event was put into the designs, it would have been better. The designs were not creative enough for the buzz, the finishing wasnt detailed, seams, thread not properly placed and almost illfitting on the models.
That is not to say it was a shoddy job, she must be appluaded for the initiative and being able to pull the right crowd. I hope the crowd will in turn bring sales for HON.

peperempe or whatever you are called, i am sure you need to get a dstv and watch fashion tv cos you critise people anyhow. you need more awareness on what is going on in the fasion industry. dimeji alara’s blazer is hot and very nice. you should take your boyfriend or your hubby to get someone to style him cos i know how he dresses. the same way you critise ezinne and others. and you need someone to put you where you belong. the sisi alagbo’s class.

    • Peperempe

      November 1, 2010 at 2:05 pm

First of all who is ezinne? Secondly I didn’t know you were Dimeji’s protector, if you loved the blazer all you had to do was log on and say so. I don’t need ftv to know what fashion is, if your clothes make people burst out laughing then maybe that’s where to draw the line.

HON brought in ALL these people to show them THIS?SMH I really feel bad for her cos the gossip mills are already buzzing.A columnist on 234next already did a hatchet job on her designs.
I think the real problem was with the fabrics and the colours were a bit garish too.The fabrics look like you can wipe them clean with a washcloth.I think next time she should invest in richer more wearable fabrics that’ll appeal to a larger audience so she can actually make some sales for all her effort.

@ Lala. Take a chill pill girlie. its not that serious. Not to be bratty but you sound like one of those naija babes that google designers. Please stop the silly fashion quotes. Calling designers names all willy nilly doesnt mean you are enlightened, it just means you have access to the internet. Honestly, what people are saying about Eku is not wrong, she is gorgeous but in order for her to keep people wanting more, she needs to make herself scarce a bit. This applies to other red carpet frequent fliers; no one would crucify you for skipping an event or two. Give us the opportunity to miss you. On a lighter note, Dimeji Alara made my day, too funny. They should lock him in fashion jail and swallow the key.

people, let’s always comment on the good and the bad, I mean let’s be constructive in our criticisms. Mai’s colours may not be masculine friendly, but mehn, his tailoring is so clean and smooth, let’s give him that. AS for Eku featuring too often, I think that shouldnt be a headache, let’s just be happy for her.

First and foremost, I was there throughout the event and I think it had a true touch of class, plus the guests turned up early for a naija. I also think that the run way and lights were a big dream of Ugonna and though it was not perfect it had the feel of International, My Issues were I felt too many Idel gossips were invited chatting and gossiping. The few people there that would have wanted to buy were pushed a side by the wannabe’s. Ugonna next time invite more people thats want to buy, the young crowd there were gossips.

You had one or two people I knew that on the front row would have bought, particularly the men.
Well done and do better next time, I expect you to be the best in ashort while, just take in the right advise and dismiss the foolish comments that were made in the spirt of Jealousy .
    Well done
