Secondary School Students in Ogun State narrate how their Principal Conducted Unauthorized Virginity Tests on Them

The Principal of a Secondary School in Ogun state, Olufunke Oladeojobi, has been quizzed by the police for allegedly conducting virginity tests on some students in her school.

Without seeking the consent of the parents and guardians of the students, she called in a nurse and jointly carried out virginity tests on a group of 10 students last week Monday.

Punch reports that the principal and the nurse whose name could not be ascertained allegedly dipped their fingers into the pupils’ private parts. After the exercise, which took place at the principal’s office, each of the pupils was given an exercise book.

Here is an excerpt of the news report stating the account of some of the students:

A 15-year-old pupil, who identified herself simply as Ayo, said the principal came into the classroom on the day and announced that all female SSS 1 pupils should converge on the assembly ground. She said the principal subsequently asked that those who had yet to lose their virginity should stand apart.

Ayo said, “We are over 600 in SSS 1 but only about 300 of us are females. Those of us that are virgins are 38 and we were marched into the principal’s office with the assistance of members of staff. They subsequently divided us into three groups of 10, 15 and 13 and I was in the second group. The principal later addressed us and threatened that any pupil who fails the test would have her name written in the school’s black book and would be suspended.”

Ayo said she became apprehensive when everyone who emerged from the office where the test was being carried out came out with a sad and disgusting look. She said, “When my class captain emerged from the room, I asked her why anyone that came out of the office looked depressed? I was held spell bound when she told me that the principal and the nurse dipped their fingers in turns into their private parts, adding that she had started bleeding as a result of the penetration. Just as I was asking further questions from her, the principal dashed out of her office and announced that she had discovered one student who had lost her virginity out of the 10 students that were examined. She wrote her name on one of the notice boards in her office and ordered the rest of us to return to our various classes. Two of my friends who had similar experiences burst into tears as they narrated what happened.”

Thirteen-year-old SSS I pupil of the school, identified simply as Ujunwa, said the principal was happy that she was able to “catch a promiscuous pupil” as she felt proud to discuss it on the assembly ground the next day.

She, however, added that her joyous moments was soon short-lived when the parents of the 10 pupils stormed the school in protest against the development.

The parents of the pupils reported the Principal’s action to the Police and she was subsequently arrested. The report further stated that she told the Police that “she was trying to help them” and that she wasn’t detained because it was taken  into consideration that she is a civil servant.

This sounds totally wrong. She had no right to do what she did, absolutely none! How could she just put her fingers into their private parts? It sounds more like sexual molestation rather than a virginity test.

We pray that in her bid to “help them”, she hasn’t caused more physical and psychological harm to the young girls.

For those of you lamenting about the ratio of virgins to non-virgins did you stop to think that those girls that stayed behind were actually smart? Their virginity is NOBODY’s business but themselves and they probably saved themselves from humiliation. Besides, what is with the emphasis on female virginity? Why did she not test the boys too? Or boys can have sex but girls cant? We need to stop with this ridiculous culture of assuming supposed sexual morality only rests on females. Finally, the parents need a good lawyer. Civil servants only need notice of prosecution when it is a civil matter. When it is a criminal matter such as this (sexual molestation) then she can be imprisoned and charged, also when notice is brought she can be charged for harassment or something (i forget). Don’t let anyone buga you. It is very important to know the law.

By the way, the principal is a pedophile and ought to be locked up for a very long time and when she gets out should be nowhere closer that 1km radius of any child (male or female). Next time, she will be inserting dildos in the girls to ascertain how promiscuous they are and raping male students to ascertain how long they can last as a means of detecting premature ejaculation.

“We pray that in her bid to “help them”, she hasn’t caused more physical and psychological harm to the young girls.”

Can we stop praying for one moment in this country. That was sexual molestation whether this person knew it or not. She sexually assaulted those females and I hope they get the proper treatment (physically and mentally) that they need.

And what we should be discussing is the welfare of these young people not how many people are virgins or not because that is a personal decision. If you’re focusing on how many virgins there are, then you are condoning what those people did by not speaking out against it. These young women are victims, get your personal bias (on virginity or a lack thereof) out of it.

What kind of stupid virginity test is that? what is even a virginity test? I tire for things just seem to be going from bad to worse, we keep praying but people are still not held accountable for their actions. After this initial uproar we probably won’t hear anything about the principal being arrested and charged for her crime, and it is a crime, sexual molestation. Same with ALUU 4 the people they “arrested” where are they now? has anyone been charged for the murders of those 4 young men? This is the way things go in Nigeria…It’s heartbreaking!

Did i read that 38 of the 300 are virgins? But how do they know this? And why do the school authorities need to know who’s a virgin or not? I wonder if the boys are held to same standards smh

I thought I was the only mad one that thot this odd. So the other 262 get no humiliation or black book but the small group of 38 gets to be traumatized and humiliated. Something is fishy. The story isn’t adding up, she and the nurse most serve time and the school must pay the girls some money for damages, all the parents in the school should stand as one and start withdrawing their kids until the principal and nurse are fired and sentenced, pure nonesense. I’m so. Disgusted. How do we protect our children in a country like this? Breaks my heart 🙁

      December 19, 2012 at 12:26 pm

Idak, that ratio is not frightening. It only confirms what we’ve always known about our so called morals. We don’t have them, and we never did. Africans are compared to their western counterparts, and you keep hearing some group chanting, our morals, our morals, that is not the African way. We have just been very good at hiding them, because our culture is repressive and very judgmental. So people do a lot of shit in secret, all in the name of looking good and saving face in the public. A lot of ill sin our society stems from immoral behaviour. So, if Africans are so moral, we shouldn’t be thrid world at all. Its all hypocrisy. Address teh problem, isntead of ignoring it, and hoping it will disappear. The public that shouldn’t care what you do with your life, as long as you are not breaking any laws, its your business. Our African morals, our African way of life, and we have men that cheat like women are going into extinction, and their wives are suffering in silence, and sometimes infected due to their husbands escapades. Rather than leave the S.O.B, they will stay there and endure all sorts of torture. The same with domestic violence. I can go on and on about our “African” way. It is only our so called “African” way of life that we cherish, that will allow these principal do what she did. Blind submission to authority. Respect your elders, obey them, even when an old woman is violating you. This can never fly elsewhere. To crown it all, she goes scot free. Let us not pretend abeg. Our children are having sex, if you deny it, or refuse to scknowledge it, how do you teach them to be safe and responsible with their bodies.

You are on fire today. I agree with most of your very reasoned arguments. However, i still believe that ratio is freigntening. At 14/15 i was still a far way from losing my virginity and i doubt i was anything special nor was in the minority in my circle of friends. I still think that while you are right that we’ve never had much morality as we pretend to have, i still think things have gotten a whole lot worse.

Even as much as am so disgusted on the actions of the principal, 38 outta 300 students, what is the world coming to, really most of these kids are within the age brackect of 14, 15, 16, they havnt fully understood puberty, reproduction and all that, and am sure they wernot even fully protected when they had sex, its very sad, our parents are clearly not doing enough work, and the students that were molested should be taken care off.

    OK Ladies and Gents….
Out of 300 students, 38 are virgins. Why did she let the other 262 students go and not put their names in the black book? Why did she have to test the 38 to see if they were really virgins and then the one that was not a virgin’s name was added to the black list? as earlier stated this principal and nurse are on to something! In a country where people are looking for quick money, nothing is impossible. My God am so sure will punish her because if I start calling for justice, who will I ensure that there is justice? sometimes they let this people go without even a fine! This is not the first we are hearing of all these rubbish.
Also young ladies need to be properly educated especially those in rural areas and public schools. Nobody I mean NOBODY!! has the right to check if you are a virgin or not. It is between you and God and when you are married between you, your husband and God. Most of teachers, principals and even some male students cajole, persuade and pressure these students to have sex and before you know it 262 students in ss1 are not VIRGINS
I rest my case I am beginning to get worked up

  30. Aibee

    December 19, 2012 at 11:03 am

That principal is a very foolish woman. If she had concerns about the morality and sexual proclivities of her students, she sould have called for a conference with the student and her parents to discuss her concerns. Note I said “her” not “their”. Each student has a right to privacy and a general PTA meeting would not suffice. Putting her fingers in girls vagina? For what purpose? How is it her business? Did she or the nurse wear gloves? Did they change gloves or wash their hands before checking the next girl? Picking up all sorts of flora and fauna from one girls vagina and transporting it into the next girl’s vagina. That virginity test is totally unacceptable. It reminds me of that report sometime in 2007 or so about Covenant University conducting Pregancy and HIV tests on its students.
By the way, BellaNaija, the proper, bioligical, anatomical word for where the Principal put her hand is a VAGINA. The vagina is as much a human body part as the ear, nose, teeth etc. We do not blush when saying legs, arms, nose, why cringe and blush at the word Vagina? It is what it is – a VAGINA. If the woman had put her hands in their anus to check if they were having anal sex, would you have still said private parts? I think its high time we stopped hiding our heads in the sand and faced up to the fact that females have vaginas and males have penises. enough with the euphemisms already.
As for those of you going on at “only 38 virgins in a class of 300”, methinks you are missing the point here. It really is none of your business. You can only decide to remain a virgin and inculcate chastity in your children and wards. You can shake your head all you want but you must realise that you can’t insulate children from the moral decay and corruption in the society. Short of proving rape, the legal age of consent is 13yrs (See Section 96 of the Criminal Code. So while you may think it immoral, it is legal.

You see, this is why some aspect of how we raise our children in the African sense, is a little archaic. This total submission to authority, even when you are being violated. Excuse me, none of those girls protested. Because it was the principal, and so what? You will have to expel me, because the dust I will raise, the neighbouring village will hear my screams. You will have to have 5 people tie me down, because I will refuse. No way will my daughter just lie down there, in the absence of her parents, and let some old woman, dip her fingers into anything. All in a bid to respect some principal, who it is not her business whether I am sexually active or not. If she gets pregnant, its not the Principal’s house the baby will be taken to, so it is not her bsuiness what she does with her body. Blind submission to authority, in the absence of reason and sound judgement. When they are not slaves. Parents take heed, lest your children be molested. Respect is one thing, obeying authority when the intention is to harm is another. Call my babies rude (which thankfully they are not) in the African sense, but I’m not raising automated robots. Children can think for themselves.

It is about time we go beyond speaking plenty grammar online because as heinous as this case is,if nothing is turn it will go the way of the ABSU rape that received unprecedented publicity but nothing came out of it.
BTW, whether 13 is the legal age of consent or not, i still believe that that ratio quoted above is proof of a society devoid of morals. Africans might be hypocrites and all that but truth is it was never this bad. It might be a global phenomenon but something is obviously wrong.

    • Miriam

      December 19, 2012 at 9:36 pm

Okay, this is going to be long. Mentally lazy BN readers, please stop here, it is not for you.
Er you see, we don’t need NGO’s. That’s passing the buck. We need to start from our homes, first and foremost. In a society where a child can question the intentions of an adult, albeit respectfully, this will not have happened to as many girls. Yes I know some kids are shy and fearful of authority by nature, but all it would have taken is one girl to display at the school, and the whole thing would have been shut down. I know my daughter would have. We are raising a strong, confident young woman, and very respectful before someone cuts my head off. She knows her boundaries, and she knows her parents won’t take arrant displays of disobedience. Teenager or not. The reason I put my comment up because two things went wrong here. The principal and the our “African” upbringing, which has done nothing but cause harm to these poor girls. I don’t blame the girls at all, they are just victims of the wrong perception and mentality. I wanted us to focus on those two things, and not just the vile nurse. So we can raise our children differently. This woman has gotten away with it. So how do we make sure it never happens again, as there are thousands of such people all over Nigeria. Imagine a university, Covenant, performing a virginity test? My daughter will walk out and tear the admission letter in their face, and I will support her. Or that happens at her boarding school. You may as well call her parents and expel her right there, cos you aint touching her underwear. So, since we can’t weed such people out, lets install in our children the confidence to be ale to protect themselves, in the face of such abuse or bullying. We teach our kids how to deal with bullies at school, we forget the greatest of all bullies. Adults. This will also help to prevent sexual abuse in the home by close family member or friends. You can’t touch my kids inappropriately, they’ve been taught to speak up. You can’t shut them up or threaten to kill them or report them to mummy, or say they’ve been bad. Adults are to be feared and revered in our culture, and that is wrong. Respect has nothing to do with that, at all. It is not a case of either or. and no we are not raising future freedom fighters or future Aluta’s. Lol.

Your hymen can be broken for a number of reasons and even at that it’s too horrible to even imagine what those poor girls went through. What or who gave her the right to stick her dirty hands up anyone’s private parts. That is sadistic and cruel. It is that kind of self-righteous, holier than thou attitude that makes me cringe. I hope she is jailed for a long time, because I don’t think any of what she did was in her Job Description.

My name is Juliet Archibong, in my sch school here in Nigerian our house matron also did this to us all in the name of that we where wayward, I could never say no to it then because I lived with my aunt who just like the typical nigerian backward mindset, assumed because we wore trousers, we where sleeping around. Am proud of the students who brought this up because we where never able to. The problem of this country is more than we can Imagine! A bunch of frustrated and faake people with xtremely judgmental brains, they do so many things in the dark and assume its normal, all in the name of church! A church who detects to u what to wear on your wedding dayn who says you must do pregnancy test on your wedding morning! I can go on and on! Its terrible! Imagine a lab scientist telling me this mornin on how a lady tested positive to hiv because she had premarital sex with her fiancee, and I asked him, if she had married him before having sex, would the hiv disappear? Imagine the mind set! Pls, let’s help our girls, we need to speak up and help this country.

…and these are supposedly a ‘teacher’ (the principal) and a ‘healthcare worker’ (the nurse)? It is simply frightening! They should both be punished for such inhumane invasion of privacy… Miriam has made a lot of sense in her comments. The pressure to abide by the apparent ‘rules’ of the society does more harm than good.

Please some students are wise enough to lie that they are not virgins so they can escape the rubbish that happened…. for those of you talking about the ratio . what of the student that bled afterwards. This so called principal must be dealt with. NGOs for women/girls/kids initiative this is your time to stand up for students in Nigeria and not hang around Abuja looking for money to fund your POCKETS.

All these stems from the fact that most Nigerian Parents never have the birds and the bees conversation with their children. You dare try this crappy virginity test here in the US and your behind will be locked in jail for good. Just saying the word “SEX” is almost like a taboo in most Nigerian homes. Parents shy away from this discussion and is something that definitely needs to change. A lot of people learn about these things from outside because their parents never had the discussion with them. I can remember when I was 12yrs old in middle school: My mum sat me down and gave me my first birds and the bees discussion ( SEX TALK) of my life. She talked about what was appropriate touching and what was way out of the line touching, what to do when someone touched you inappropriately or tries to molest you. This discussion my mum had with me went a very long way. I almost got molested in high school and because of the several discussion my mum and I had in the past I knew just what to do. I could easily talk to my mum about everything and anything: the sex talk, dating, guys, being able to bring my boyfriend from High School home. Nigerian parents need to be more open (create an open forum with your kids) : Your kids should be able to walk up to you at anytime to have this discussion without being scared or feel like they are committing some taboo.

    — That whole thing about obey your elders all the time is just crappy to me : even when they are clearly crossing the line and boundaries. There is absolutely no way I am going to be raising Zombie Kids (adhering to everything even when it hurts them). I am raising kids that can respectfully question why things are done the way they are, can walk up to me and their dad and talk about anything and everything, knows what to do in the case of molestation and what action needs to be taken, not adhering to crappy rules and regulations that are clearly way out of line, knowing how to respond when an elderly person tries to cross the line or crosses the line. it’s about time we raise strong respectable daughters and sons.

She may just hv performed some rituals or so on them. Crazy as it may sound but she and her co nurse should be JAILED and struck off any teaching or school premises for life.

That was NOT a virginity test. The traditional virginity test requires ONLY a visual inspection, and not penetration of any sorts. Women, we need to be teaching our children, especially our daughters, some common sense. NOBODY, be it man or woman, has the right to as much as look at your pants for any reason whatsoever. The evil woman must have taken advantage of this knowledge gap, if it was a male principal I’m sure none of d girls would have agreed to such.

By the way, i find that Covenant University tale laughable. If that tale was true, all the girls i know in the sample population who attended that school should never have been there.
