67 Year-Old Australian Grandma Found Dead in South Africa after Meeting with 28 Year-Old Nigerian who Proposed on Online Dating Site

A 67 year-old grandmother from Australia has been found dead in South Africa where she travelled to meet a 28 year-old Nigerian she met on an online dating site.

The woman, Jette Jacobs was found dead in a Johannesburg guest house in February, two days after she met up with a man calling himself Jesse Orowo Omokoh. According to AU News, the pair struck up an online relationship three years ago. In 2010, Jacobs travelled to South Africa to meet him before he proposed late last year. Over several years she sent over $100,000 to him.

After he proposed, she wanted to settle in Nigeria but her children had begged her to stay in Australia. Yahoo News reports that her money, credit cards, laptop computer and jewellery were missing. Omokoh was the last person to see Jacobs alive and told police he found her body but he has since disappeared.

Although an empty pill bottle was found near her body and the South African police initially thought she had committed suicide, her children believe she was murdered.

“Anybody who knew my mother would know that there is no way that she would do that,” her daughter told 6PR.

Her son, who wants to be identified only as Mr Jacobs, told Yahoo News: “After losing dad, mum was feeling very lonely so she went online and went to one of the dating sites and this young man contacted her and started to chat to her. Mum, not realising what she was getting herself into, started talking to this guy. This was about four years ago, and in that period of time they’d been chatting quite regularly, then she decided to travel to South Africa to meet him.”

“We didn’t want her to go, we tried to stop her but she pushed us away and said we didn’t know what we were talking about. We didn’t understand he was a true friend and not one of those scams, and she really believed that she had someone that really loved her.”

A joint operation between West Australian Police and Consumer Protection tracks large amounts of money being sent from West Australia to West African countries. A letter was sent to Jacobs warning she might be a victim of fraud but it arrived shortly after she had left Australia.

Detective Senior Constable Robert Martin, from the Major Fraud Squad, says the circumstances surrounding her death are suspicious. He told Yahoo News that the rising number of tragic occurences from meeting a person online is alarmingly high. “My warning is that unless you have met the person face-to-face you do not know what you are dealing with when you are talking to somebody online. It is absolutely fraught with danger and we would say don’t sent money to anybody that you have met on the computer. We also strongly urge people not to travel overseas to meet someone they have met on the computer.”

The Police are still searching for Omokoh.

Someone needs to start a dating service aimed at the elderly. These people really need companionship and are often in the receiving end of all sort of abuse in their quest for love at the eve of their lives. Seriously! Most of us will get to live old and many will lose their spouse if their are lucky to find one and then what? Old people were not born old, we will be them. They need love too. It is a social issue that needs to be adressed everywhere.

My attention has been drawn to the recent media outlash which was widely circulated on the internet and by some print media about my alleged involvement in the suicide of one Jette Jacobs, a 68 year old Australian grand mother. The following is my side of the story.
I Omokoh Orowo Jesse from Nigeria, 28 yrs of age had known Jette Jacobs for about 3 years now, we’ve been friends since April 2010, we met on facebook and since then we were getting along very well and then decided to meet in person august 2011, at south Africa/ On the 4th of august 2011 we met for the first time and spent nine days together before I returned back to Nigeria, we kept on communicating and then I told her I would like to visit but instead she said she would come to Nigeria since am still in school and she wouldn’t want to disrupt my studies. We made plans for that and finally decided to meet December 2012, Jette arrived south Africa December and waited for me to come but then I had some issues acquiring a new visa which took me some few months to finally get as it was denied twice, and during this few months Jette and her friend from Ghana by name Isaac Addo whom she brought to south Africa 2010 started having some issues together which later developed to some kind of love affairs, although she claimed Isaac was just her son. On the 4th of February 2013 I left Nigeria for South Africa and arrived 5th February, Jette was at the airport to pick me up, and together we went home. I have this family friend who I was to carry some cloths from Nigeria to him so 3 days before my arrival I told Jette about him and she decided to pick him up from Pretoria, on getting home that day of my arrival, we all had breakfast and later in the evening we had dinner, me and Jette had some discussion about her relationship with Isaac, I was a bit pissed off and later slept off. The next day been the 6th of February, Jetted dropped me and my family friend at his residence in Pretoria and was hoping to pick me up later at night, but it happen that the second match between Ghana and Burkina faso went late so I told her to pick me up the next day instead. After the matches which I watched at Super bet in Sunnyside Pretoria, we went further to have a light drink in celebration for our qualification to the finals at Europa club which is close to the super-bet and from there I went home and sleep. I woke up late the next day and saw several missed calls from Jette and text messages which she sent that I am mad at her and the pain is just too much for her to handle and that she want to put a stop to this pain, she also sent me a text saying she will take all her pills and just die off so she won’t be hurting any longer, I replied her messages and tried calling her, she never picked and later on her phone didn’t go through again, I was really worried and decided to try and locate the hotel we stayed, since I was just there for a few days I didn’t really know my way around, so with the help of my family friend and also a south African taxi driver who took us there we were able to locate the place after 4 hours. When I entered into the house I went to the room and found Jette lying lifeless on the bed, I raised an alarm and the security guard to the house came who immediately called the police, and also the South African forensic department. After several hours of investigation and questioning they all concluded that it was a suicide, and also empty sachet of pills was found by the side of her bed and a note which states ‘ to my darling husband, I love you xxxxx’, I was in shock and totally devastated by the sight of her, I showed the police the text messages she sent me which they wrote down and also the head of security, I gave them my statement and explained everything to them, all this took hours they even made a photocopy of my passport and carried her dead body to the morgue, after which the doors were locked and the keys returned back to the agent in charge of the hotel rooms. The police collected my friends number and said that am free to go and that if they ever need me they would contact me. And that was how I went to Pretoria that day. On Sunday the 10th of February I had to come back home to Nigeria as that was my initial return date on my ticket. Few days after my arrival my family friend contacted me saying he was contacted by Agent in charge of the hotel that they need me to come and pack out the load belonging to Jette as her rent is due. I tried contacting her closest friend (Marie) and inform her about the sad demise of Jette and also told her to help me get her son’s contact so that I can tell him what happened, also I contacted a second friend (Ruth) who I told to try and get her son’s contact for me also, me and Ruth kept in contact for a couple of weeks but she never did get me the son’s contact.
And finally on the 4th of march 2013 I saw my face all over the internet saying I had some connections with the demise of Jette and that since then nobody has heard about me and am on the run, this really is a shocking news and I know there are just trying to spoil my good name and the good name of my country. I never ran, I alerted the police at South Africa who told me they would contact me, and also I had to come to back to finish with my studies. I am so shocked and confused about this whole story of me murdering Jette and even taking her money. Jette had some other Ghanaian friends apart from Isaac who she always keep contact with, they told her many different stories and issues they are having just to get money from her, I told her not to listen to whatever they say, there was a time one of her friends bought a television set from overseas and sent to her I was the one who told her to report it to the authorities and send the TV set back to where it came from. I never scammed Jette and had no intentions of doing that. It was so unfortunate things ended up the way it did. I am a law abiding citizen of my country Nigeria and that all this news and stories are just a way to tarnish my good image, and also to give the impression that Nigeria are bad and corrupt which is not true. This is my own side of the story, God bless Nigeria.

As myopic as this may sound, i will ask what a 67 yr old woman is searching for on a dating site, an average “old-school” Nigerian grandma at that age would have gone celebate, focusing on her grandchildren and how to make heaven….So sad anyways, wish the woman eternal rest & for the scamming bas***** i pray they catch you and youy rot in hell… cos you are not only destroying the image of other Nigerians, you are also gonna make it alot more difficult for young 9ja guys who want to travel abroad for legit reasons.

My questionis, why will a 67 yrs old woman from Australian accept to visit a young man from s/Africa dat claim to be a nigeria she don’t know is true background?and how are we even sure this man is from nigeria.See I think what the Human right association and other Agency should should focus on if they want to redeem the image of this country,is to find and catch him and find out if he is really from this country or not and made him pay for is wicked and evil attitude as an example to others.

This is very sad… to think it still happens.. she is 67, he was 28 what was she looking for with him? and the sum of money? do people not read the news or are not aware of predators like him? It is possible she might have taken the pills when she found out what the boy was really about, or he might have killed her- though one has to wonder what purpose killing her would achieve.. if she went back to Australia, and he Nigeria, we know the Nigerian police force is ineffectual and probably wont catch him.. So killing her was an unnecessary waste of life, and not smart as his picture is all over the internet now.. The poor woman *sigh*

Hi every1, u dont need 2 criticize d innocent dude. D delta state born jesse omokho ɪ knew few yrs back would never hurt a fly not 2 talk of his fello human. ɪ av stayed in d same compund with him in ibadan for several yrs. And ɪ even saw him afta dis incident. ɪ can tell u 100% dat jesse is innocent of dis crime. He is a bonafide student of d premier university, ibadan & studied geology. Some of u opening ur stinking gutter called mouth & criticizing him, urs is worse dan his own. Jesse, ɪ bliv every side of ur story & ɪ pray God would intervene!

Pure flat out liar!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys go to school to learn how to deceive people of money, this is your job, no college involved, it’s unfortunate that you live off of people who are vulnerable, my mother was a victim of money theft, fortunately, I was able through prayers and God intervening, that she only lost $4300 dollars, nothing else, not even her life, thank God! God does not like ugly and you and all who do this as a job, will pay for your wrong, unfortunately, Ghana has this reputation for being scammers, so no matter what you say, Ghanaians are scammers!!!!!
