“The Queen of Nollywood”! Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde covers UK’s The Sunday Telegraph’s Stella Magazine

Published

 on

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde - August 2013 - bellaNaija

And the queen of Nollywood is…

… well we are going to let you decide on that one.

But Stella Magazine is calling Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde the queen of Nollywood. The movie superstar covers the new issue of the publication which is a free insert in UK’s The Sunday Telegraph.

Although she isn’t facing us on the cover, Omosexy smoulders in an off the shoulder black blouse, smokey eyes and wavy locks.

Still relatively new in the UK, the magazine introduces her as “The biggest film star you’ve never heard of”.

What’s your take on the cover and title? Let us know!

Its a free insert not even a real magazine sef. Leave naija to blow everything out of proportion. Mediocrity is our standard na so i’m not surprised.

As free as it is, why is No other Nigerian ever featured on the Cover. Hian!. Its not celebrating mediocrity, it is celebrating a Nigerian Super Star with every little step she takes into World-wide domination. Compared to where she’s coming from (Home videos, Encomium etc,) to international recognition, this is definitely a step forward. Eat your heart out hatersssss! *Buhahahahahahahahaha*

See how intelligent you are? So she did this interview after Elle.com and quickly published it herself abi? Common lets breathe before we tap whatever na? This her interview was done a long time ago cause I saw a tweet from her publicist then wishing her a good shoot. It’s the UK telegraph I’m sure they know nothing about your Elle.com scandal. Relax.

Dear Bukky, why are you answering these ignoramuses? I see you have left 3 comments or so on the article. Leave them. It’s the ignorant people like them who keeps Omo’s flag flying. Either she is queen or not, her bank account keeps getting bigger and fatter while theirs is in perpetual overdrawn status. They have no idea what Telegraph is and because its a free insert, they believe it’s not worth reading. Fools. I spend my saturdays reading all the free inserts (which by the way is in ALL NEWSPAPER HERE IN UK) in my husband’s weekend newspapers. Just because she is no longer churning out films which are usually made in 2-3 days doesn’t not mean she is not working on quality feature films which could take weeks/months to make and release. Moreover she is a brand, filming is not the only thing she should be known for. She will explore all options and take advantage of her celebrity status. She has a good publicist/manager who is very clued on. Kudos to him/her or both of them.

Take it from someone who knows- most people here saying no one reads stella- those are the ones who dont know and are not interested in reading the Telegraph. Yes its free , but its prestigious, such is stylist magazine (which is freely given away at the entrance to most London underground stations- but get your name in there and you are MADE- AT LEAST MILLIONS OF PEOPLE FREELY READING WILL HEAR ABOUT YOU. So while you all sit behind your keyboards being spiteful. Lets raise a glass to this woman who is a talent and who has done well for herself. Its not BEANS to be on the cover of a magazine – free or not.

      August 27, 2013 at 10:51 pm

i’m sorry to disappoint you but you can’t compare omotola’s acting range with genevieve’s one-face acting. genevieve got lucky in nollywood, yes she worked hard, but she knows she’s an average actor at best. omotola is a fake person so she can fake her way through acting, but genevieve is honest, and it shows in her acting, as she tends to hold back her emotions and abilities, she’s reserved. genevieve has worked hard because many people looked down on her at the beginning, but she is still an average actor, and she needs to learn to “release”.dasall!

Lol, you people should please leave Omotola & Genevive alone. I’m extremely proud they’re both putting Nollywood out there eon the map & displaying their talents for the world to see. I’ve been watching Nollywood films since childhood, & I love them both. I just hate when people begin to start unnecessary competition b/w the two. They both deserve whatever publicity they go after & eventually receive. No one saw Julia Roberts competing with Angelina Jolie. They’re both two different individuals & let’s just leave it at that.

Kudos to her PR team, or maybe this Omotola fan here dosent care.. I love OmoT and all but this reeks of cheap publicity to me.. Maybe its just me..

And to the people insulting, well i really do not blame you because she (OmoT) is the one putting herself out there but i can CONFIDENTLY say that OmoT at her very best in my opinion blows every other actress out of the water! I said “at her best” because cos she has had a few meh performance over the course of her carrier but when she is on shes amazing! She just needs to slow it down a bit hype wise, or maybe tell her PR to slow it down..either way..My two cents! 😛

Omotola for the love of God you are so damn overrated, Please give me one oscar worthy performance she has done in all her movies, Just one. She is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo overrated. My goodness. She is putting a lot of money in PR companies to push her,but in the end those in the west will notice she is just average, Queen of Nollywood indeed. You can tell the person who published this has not even watched ANY of her movies. Good Actress yes, she is, but Best in NOLLYWOOD, chile puhleese, thats is absolutely rubbish, even Mercy Johnson is 10 times better than her. Shoot, even Rita Dominic is million times better than her.

if you are going to disagree i said mention one or two oscar worthy performance she has done in the past. All her movies i have watched is just Okay, Not fantastically phenomenal.

Nobody is jealous of Omotola. Fact is FAct, lets not beat around the bush. Stop praising mediocrity. Kiloday. Shoooo . She is a beautiful woman (OUTSIDE ONLY as far as i know, INSIDE abeg i dont know, cos i never met her), if that is any consolation to her mumu fans. She is a veteran and has paved the way for many, she has beautiful figure for mom of 4, but so does Omoni Omoli mother of 3 (this is where the overate comes in), BUT TO SAY SHE IS QUEEEN ON NOLLYWOOD Based on her resume of work and performance in past 10 yrs, is an insult to Genevieve, An Insult to Mercy (most versatile i know) and an insult to Rita Dominic (i wont mention Ini cos she is younger and started at a later stage). ARe her praises based on her beautiful cocacola shape or based on her talent as an actress, Mercy has an even better shape, yet you hear ppl praise her talent more, but omotola whenever you hear the praises u ask why they will tell you she has beautiful figure, now how stupid is that, u are a fan of her figure (that should be an insult to omotola herself). 🙂

    • Hope

      August 27, 2013 at 11:47 pm

You make some valid points.. I agree that Omotola is a bit overrated at the moment (and i say that as a proud fan who aint afraid to criticize her when i feel she crossed the line) . Honestly, i cringed a little when i saw “Queen of Nollywood” not because it is false, but because it is totally subjective so to confidently say that on a magazine can be a bit “off putting” for non fans..(although i also feel you need not just have one queen, you can have more than one..lol..)

However, i do not think its an “insult” to other actresses as you claim even though you might not agree with the title..For me, Ive been watching Mercy Johnson for a while now and the only movie i can remember her for is maybe “Dumebi dirty girl”. I couldnt even name a Rita Dominic movie off top my head until i watched “All my life” the other day.. Everybody remembers “Mortal Inheritance” “The Prostitute” “Ije” “I Belong”… Genevieve too has some memorable movies.. “Sharon Stone” hello??..lol..And for me, one of the reasons to someone is a great actress is if i have something to remember them for.. And you think Genny dosent have a good PR team too? Forbes, Opara mention, didnt just put her there…Shes got a solid team behind her too

    • Mounah

      August 28, 2013 at 12:14 am

I have to admit that you’re one fan with a head on her shoulder. Most of Omotola fans hate it when people try to say the truth. As for me, not no one fan but GOD, I love them all. However, Omotola can be so so sometimes, “too much of everything is nonsense” as an old adage goes. For me, if she really wants to make it in Hollywood, she doesn’t need all these unnecessary publicity (apart from Time mag.), because the shakers & movers of Hollywood look at quality. There are many actresses in Hollywood, but when you here people mention Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie & Meryl Streep they come with quality. People hardly see or hear about Meryl Streep & she is the BEST actress so far in all of Hollywood, yet you don’t hear her calling herself “queen” nor do you even see your family. Even Julia Roberts, people hardly see her family, & whenever she does a movie, it’s once a while & is an absolute quality. For me, Omotola isn’t the queen & neither is Genevieve. What will Joke SIlver, Liz Benson, & Patience say. I know they’re older but they have greater performances & oscar worthy movies than Omotola could ever dream of. When Joke Silver & Liz Benson were younger no one heard of competition, I don’t understand why it is with Omotola & Genevieve. It’s quite embarrassing.

    • ILoveGenevieve

      August 28, 2013 at 1:48 am

You can’t list names of movies Genevieve, Rita and Mercy gave account of their talent in? If yes, I think than anything else, it’s rather shameful (no pun intended). I mean, who chooses their best without watching the rest? Fans of the Lady with Kim K vibes? Likely. Adding to your list of Omotola’s (to prove I watch the rest despite having my favourites); “When Love Dies”, “Masterstroke”, “Final War” and “Ties that Bind”.

Genevieve gave good account of her talent in “Ijele”, “Blood Sisters”, “For Better For Worse”, “Super Love”, “Rising Sun”, “Wind of Glory”, “Ije” and “Tango with Me” to name a few.
Rita Dominic in “All My Life”, “Distance Between”, “Ultimate Crisis”, “White Waters”, “Be Not Afraid” and “The Meeting” to name a few.

And Mercy Johnson in “The Maid”, “Live To Remember”, “Distance Between” “Guilty Pleasures” and “Dumebi The Dirty Girl” to name a few.

those names next to an omotola truth be told is an insult to an
Omotola! Omotola started acting and has remained relevant with
probably the best body if work till date since 1995! Which of those
names up there started then? Which of them can you call a movie of
that omotola hasn’t done at least 2 or 3 similar roles of and
better? I remember the ” games women play ” then with omotola,
genny and stella Damascus. Who was the only actress who won an
award for her role in the movie? Omotola. She is glamorous YES but
she always backs it up with work! That’s a rounded talent!

MErcy Johnson, Rita Dominic and Genevieve please invest insome PR because clearly lately real talent dont count, so far as you got a great PR Machine behind you, your brand will be pushed, i mean look at someone like Yvonne Nelson, zero talent, but her PR and branding team is so on point this 2013. Its all about PR, Branding and Marketing, clearly Omotola has proved it here this year.

As usual, this becomes an opportunity to knock the woman’s efforts. No one is asking that people sing praises but why knock her effort. Genevieve shouldn’t get mentioned. It has SFA to do with her. If the Telegraph think she is the best, that’s it then…
If all the so called PRs fetch her a well paid supporting role which exposes her to a bigger audience, good for her. You people pray for success so why spend such negative energy knocking someone who is about to get hers answered.

My question is, What is Omotola selling? Why has she constantly been parading and talking about past glory n horrible singing. Does she have a movie out or another hurricane of strings, frog tones n pangolo music along with over weight body in musical videos? I know a celeb constantly parades when they have work out and need people to know about. Kini omonla n taa? Egbami Queen of nollywood ke? I laugh in ijebu. I was pissed at resent recognition as influential like really? They wanted some african or nigerian to fix in n omotola’s pr where right there to sweep it up. Rubbish! Woman go and rough it out with a good script and let that do the talk or else carry your over weight bone and jump some ropes.

    August 28, 2013 at 1:28 am

Omotola’s diction makes me cringe everytime back in the day if you look at her old movies she didnt even use to open her mouth much when she speaks just murmurig stuff, but after the teeth was fixed she gained more confidence, but that diction is still a strugle. She is doing good with her PR team, but she is an average actress i must admit. Good for you Omotola, for investing so much on PR – you doing the most.

    • David

      August 28, 2013 at 9:39 am

Yet her diction got her a mention on CNN as the 5th sexiest
accent . Who cares what you love or hate? Who are you?anonymous
like me. Hahahaha… Hater ! She did her teeth. You must have been
her dentist. Omotola keep going. You have always proved your worth
and your work is there for all clear headed people to see. Leave
the crickets to keep making noise while you and all that love good
      things keep winning.

I can see that there’s Alot of jealousy on this post its
sickening. I know most of these have been written by perhaps one
jealous soul. All of a sudden some low life is comparing Omotola’s
acting skills with a mercy overacting johnson, Genevieve stiff no
expression Nnaji , and even rita sweet but coming up rita domnic.
Wow! All just to try and knock the woman’s hustle . Very laughable.
Where were these jokers when Omotola won the biggest awards in 1996
” Best actress in an English speaking role” and “best actress
overall” thema awards? Age 18? – still the youngest ever to have
won such awards? … They were either not yet acting, or playing
waka pass ( Genevieve played extra( waka pass) in most wanted in
1998. This woman has done bitchy roles well , comedy ( I belong
etc), emotional roles ( my story, the prostitue, the one with
Ramsey Noah can’t remember the title etc) probably the most
decorated actress with over 40! Awards locally and Internationally!
Been working in lead roles since 1995 and still doing leading roles
today I.e lastflight to Abuja, ties that bind etc , most of her
movies raking millions in cinemas. With movies still in post
production like Amina where she played lead with British actors Wil
johnson and the actor from Camelot and 300! I can see why jealousy
for her is insane. People love this chick, she is the first and
probably only African celeb with over 1m likes on Facebook! If TIME
MAGAZINE knows she’s the queen of Nollywood and THE TELEGRAPH calls
her the Queen of Nollywood… Then go figure. These are respectable
platforms who do their work! All Nigerian movie actors have PR. Pr
can never get respectable platforms to say things about you they
haven’t researched. Omotola is not mates with all those Actors you
all scream their names. Internationally, they only know omotola.
    Deal with it!

Omotola how are you? I know you read bellanaija for comments hide under a handle and comment. My advice woman, stop coping kim kardashian, except its porn you want to promote or shove down our throat like the failed music and rubbish reality show. Please and abeg, go find emem isong beg am for role so we can give you all the sugar in mouth comments you want. fYI… Genevieve beats you hands down as an actress stiff or not her constant improvement speaks while what you have is people thinking you are a pretty face and see your body. Im not saying you are not ok, even rita shocked me with the movie THE MEETING or whats it called. Stop shoving ur face in our view or you will also go down the kim hate line from fans.

Omotola is a Damn good actress and she has her act
together. The UK telegraph is big exposure for her. I really don’t
think omotola cares about the politics going on in Naija. She has a
sure fan base there and is obviously forging on. This lady is
smart. She targets the right mediums. She and her team are on
point. Most importantly, God is Definately with her.

    August 28, 2013 at 9:37 am

Omotola’s PR team are a smart bunch of people, getting her
on the front cover of a free mag which no one really reads. Even if
no one opens it, we still get to see her on the front cover lol!
We’ll just have to wait and see if THIS IS THE KIND of publicity

good actress no doubt but “Queen of Nollywood”? Omotola haba even
if the Mag choose that caption you should have declined bcos I am
sure they can’t publish it without you reading through 1st. When
you are a Queen what will you be in 10years time?

I used to like OmoT but now I’m indifferent to her and no, I’m not a fan of Genevieve.
Y’all, can you please quit with the comparison? if you guys (OmoT’s voltrons & Genny’s voltrons) wanna be sincere, you would agree that there are some roles OmoT would play so well and Genny wouldn’t be able to play that well and vice-versa.
And really, I’m tired of seeing Omot everywhere! Really! She should chill! Gosh! You wanna talk about Oscar-worthy actresses, you talk about Liz Benson, Joke Silva etc. I agree, OmoT is a good actress but is she the queen of Nollywood? yes, well as long as I am Oprah Winfrey.
    Let us rest mbok!

Anyone who does not believe Omotola is the queen of nollywood is being ignorant. She is without questions. She started young, married young does her thing well, is a good wife and mother and has NO scandal! Emphasis on ‘No’. Not all these other married young actresses with questionable character that abound or those rumoured to have married another’s husband. Genevieve is a very good actress and I love her to bits but Omotola has an edge over her I must say.

OMOT IS TAKING NO PRISONERS, IF Genny wants the crown she needs to WERK FOR IT and buying a chanel bag and forming classy wont cover it, any daddy’s girl can afford that. Start working at your craft instead of touring china and buy bag. I think OMOTOLA has gone in to the extent where we can tell the other girls in nollywood to bow the hell down. Mama keep making me proud. Also if you want to be personally branded and strategic pr omo get at her PR Peeps. I want an internship with you people

Can someone tell me what these fools (kokoqueen, ilovegenny, Sunshyne, jujubees, B.I.T.C.H. babe in total control of herself, joke, princess) stand to gain by condemning their fellow Nigerian who has been working so hard to create a positive name for the entertainment industry and Nigeria as a whole.
I pity you all, i am very sure you have never stepped your crazy dirty selves out of the country before because if you guys have traveled far and wide then you would know what the whole world thinks of your country. They call Nigerians bad names, we are rated as one of the worst countries in the world, they attached no good to us and yet you are sitting idle condemning and criticizing your fellow Nigerian who works day and night to make us proud to the world.
If you want to compare Omotola with any of the Nigerian actress, well Genny fine because she is making us proud too but not and definitely not the likes of Mercy and co. Mercy might be a good actress but she’s not up to standard.
Appreciate what you have and stop condemning Omotola, i’m sure you guys would wake up praying to God for breakthrough, do you think your prayers would be answer if you keep condemning someone whom God has pave way for?
You are there saying trash about Omotola instead of you working hard to achieve your own greatness and pray to God to lift up so that the world will know you for greatness… shitheaded people.
Keep Shinning OMOTOLA and LONG LIVE QUEEN OF NOLLYWOOD!!!!

my goodness. shame on some of you. to denigrate someone’s effort because the magazine is one of the free one’s in a well respected newspaper? I have no problem with people expressing themselves, and even “hating”, what i have a problem with is pettiness, and that is the behaviour some of you are exhibiting. let us analyse this shall we, the telegraph is nothing like the sun newspaper, it is actually more expensive, better written, and one of the good newspapers, therefore the people who will buy it, and see her will be lets say the more socially discerning people who care about what they feed their eyes and brain.. so to my way of thinking what she and her p.r has done is to promote her to other members of the society who will appreciate her more. now whether you know about this newspaper, or dont read it, that is not the point, or it may be the point because clearly you are not the clientèle the piece is aimed at then. if they decide to call her the queen of nollywood, why should she reject it? its not like she waltzed into the interview and decided to bestow that name on herself, and if she has, then id say she is entitled to. her works speak for themselves!

Genevieve got lucky and til date her acting is getting worse, so all the hate comments are just unecessary. what was Genevieve’s last good movie, and how many times have we see her in a different role? when Genevieve’s PR got her on Oprah, nobody insulted her even when she hadn’t been in any good movie, and now y’all hating on Omotola who is a better actress and even more beautiful.
