Lemme ask this question. I have been somewhat following the world cup. from the officials on the field to the players and the Brazillian celebrities. Now I see gisele and Adriana Lima. The only black person wey I don see so far na Pele. WHERE ARE ALL THE BLACK PEOPLE IN BRAZIL WHO COMPRISE 51% of the POPULATION? God shall soon unshackle the chained.

Black and mixed race people make up just over half of Brazil’s population. By Nigerian standards, we don’t necessarily consider mixed race black, and some of them who identify as being part black (like Adriana Lima) do not necessarily look as black as our naija half castes. Having said that, there are many blacks in Brazil. Unfortunately, they are at the bottom of the social ladder and often go unrecognised.

I happen to know from some work I did there that a drop of black blood for them is counted as black. One of the complaints of the black population is that the “whites” among them do not let them self-identify, and as you can imagine, na dem hold classification pen and paper. ie, they dont let the individual say I believe I am black or white. Rather, they do it for them. this race thing is a big issue. As you mentioned, they are highly impoverished and live in the most dehumanizing conditions. As of this year, I believe them get only 1 bonafide black person for paliarment. 90% of the paliamentarians na White Potoki. The remain 10% na those people wey black but you no fit tell. For Brazil wey e dey hard to see black man wey be cleaner or wey get any other position in the service industry. Unless you travel to Bahia – the “black capital of Brazil” and the great urbanized Rio. The blacks are in the favelas (slums) and are afraid to leave for the sake of becoming victims of the system. See more info for here:
“Evidence of exclusion of the vast black minority in Brazil is rampant. Nearly 80 per cent of Afro-Brazilians live below the nation’s poverty line, compared to 40 per cent of white citizens. Afro-descendants in Brazil earn half of what white groups earn; life expectancy is 6.5 years lower for blacks than for whites; and one half of all Afro-Brazilians are illiterate – some two and a half times the number of whites who cannot read or write. Only 4 per cent of Afro-Brazilians between the ages of 18 and 24 are in universities, compared to 12 per cent of whites. Three-quarters of all Afro-Brazilians have not completed secondary school, and 40 per cent of blacks have not completed elementary school. In the UNDP’s Human Development Index (HDI), Brazil ranks 69th. This is roughly the average of two Brazils divided by race: the HDI of a hypothetical Afro-Brazilian nation would come 101st, while an all-white nation would rank 46th. Social and economic progress in Brazil depends on the advancement of the country’s large black population. – See more at: minorityrights.org/?lid=5289#sthash.nFdNjDNx.dpuf
