Pope Francis: “Theories of Evolution & the Big Bang are Right”… BN-ers Do You Agree?

Pope Francis Visits South Korea - Day Five

According to the Holy Bible, God created heaven and earth. However, according to Pope Francis, this may not necessarily be the case.

He has declared that the theories of Evolution and the Big Bang are real, The Independent reports.

The pope reportedly made these comments while speaking at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Here are excerpts from his speech:

“When we read about Creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so…

He created human beings and let them develop according to the internal laws that he gave to each one so they would reach their fulfillment.

The Big Bang, which today we hold to be the origin of the world, does not contradict the intervention of the divine creator but, rather, requires it.

Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation, because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve.”

BellaNaijarians, what’s your take on this? Do you believe that evolution/big bang theories of how the world came into existence are real? Or do you believe that a Supreme Being created heaven and earth? Let’s talk about it!

all these fictional books like the bible and quran are out dated and should be kept in the museum and not in the homes of people.
these books contain outdated practices and traditions and shouldnt be followed in todays society

masters be kind to your slaves” a book that supports and encourages slavery should not be a book to follow and obey in todays society . and pls christains stop denying the old testament. the new testament also encourages slavery.

At a point in your life you were a slave….at home, work, community…life is a master and slave game if you are not aware….so there must be a place for advise to the masters and slaves…knowledge on the order of God and Man is complex and is not the feeble minded.

If this is really from him, which i find hard to believe then he really does not understand Gen 1, since that she be preposterous.. I simply move on, fact of life is order cannot create itself out of disorder. Creation according to Genesis is not a teaching for the religious but a very verifiable scientific fact, written before science that is why of all the “mythical’ explanation of life non has been able to stand the test of time!

Having said that i head to refresh myself and smile at those who argue with this fundamental truth!!

    • Mohammad

      October 29, 2014 at 12:11 pm

Edie. Verifiable by science? What have you been smoking? Abeg comot for here before you continue to disgrace yourself. Stop trying to suggest that faith and science go together.
Hebrews 11:1 reads: Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Science is knowledges gleamed and revised on the basis of evidence. The key is its reliance on verifiable evidence. In terms of their simple definition, I can find no further distinction between them and are as a result, absolutely incompatible.
I am an atheist, but don’t mind people practising religion privately. I just want it relegated from the public sphere. I don’t want to know what fetishes to Allah, Jesus or Obatala anyone practises in their private life nor do I want to be subjected to it in the laws of the land, platitudes that politicians or commenters on blogs might pass and also in the unsolicited prayers of people who “mean well” but still come off disrespectful.

God created the world via the big bang. Scientists say there was a big BANG and everything came to be. That “big bang” was God saying “let there be…….” and then it came to be. Pope Francis is not saying it was either or. But both explanations are saying the same thing just that scientists refuse to acknowlege there was a WHO that brought about the hig bang and just that there was a big bang.

    October 29, 2014 at 11:07 am

I don’t think that he was implying that God did not create the heavens and earth. The caption is quite misleading. I agree with him. What he is saying is: yes, what the Bible says is true, although the Bible does not specify how exactly these things happened; and now, science has explained it so that we can understand correctly. Science is not inconsistent (in this context) with the Bible’s account. Thus, when God created the earth, he spoke (Bible) and there was a big bang (science explains). The bible says a day in heaven is like a thousand on earth. When the Bible says ‘one day’, it might very well refer to a long period of earthly conceivable time. The Bible also did not say that Adam looked exactly like humans in the present day. I’m not so sure about us evolving from apes, because God deliberately made humans separate from all other living things. Perhaps Adam had more prominent features that helped him survive in that time e.g. a lot more hair, rougher palms and feet, a shorter stature, etc. that might have looked more like an ape than a human in the present day (still doesn’t mean he was an ape though). So the pope is not implying that God did not make man or the earth; he is only saying that science has given us a clearer idea how. 🙂

Gen1:27 -‘ So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them…’

Toyosi, what image are you thus implying? An ape-like looking God? If everything he created was perfect & good (Gen1:36) then where does evolution (a progressive improvement fr homo habilis – homo sapiens) fit in?
Old-age creationism (which tries to offer a scientific explanation for creationism) is not compatible with either of the two creation stories (Gen1 vs Gen2). which even differ in themselves: one states man was created last the other first… The Big Bang may be compatible with creation in that something happened but evolution is not.
Historically, the biblical creation stories (& flood) are rehashed versions of much older Babylonian creation stories (Gilgamesh & Enuma Elish) which even predate the bible. Every culture has its own creation myth, the Adam & Eve account is just Judaism’s version and should not be taken any more seriously than Obantala & co as explanations for the origins of life.

Phenotypic features are d same but surely they must hv bin blacker, wt more coarse skin, not as pretty as u can obtain amg ur present relatives and so on. But its still d same likeness and image. Nothing except a more perfect appearance changed.

      Tell ’em!!!
To be honest, the Oduduwa story is more inventive as it doesn’t seem to have just been borrowed from the myths of other cultures.
And the idea of the rope from which he descended still being in Ile Ifę today gives me as much belief in creationism as the abrahamic religions- none.

    • larrydavy

      October 29, 2014 at 11:50 pm

I just want to preface this by saying I don”t want convince you about God. That’s not my job. I live in a country where people are turning away from God in mass. So I’m familiar with the arguments you have above: contradictions in the bible; creation stories in the bible are similar to Babylonian creation stories.

However, I’ve noticed most people that have huge qualms with the bible or God rarely do their own in depth research. They do the same thing they claim most Christians do (and I know most Christians don’t act like the Berean Christians) by taking what authorities in the atheists and agnostic movements say. I’m a skeptic by nature, but the word of God and his move in my life has solidified my belief in him. I don’t look at people (we’re all flawed); I look at GOD.

    • chichi

      October 29, 2014 at 5:41 pm

You see why research is important? Mehn, this comment is gonna be long. so please bear with me. I dont know where to start to be honest. Toyosi, i get your point for the most part. If the pope had said what you just said, id let that slide. You used the word “science” while the pope used “Evolution” and “Big bang Theory”..BIG DIFFERENCE. The pope basically said that the theory of evolution and creation compliment each other, so first of all, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the caption of this article. The pope seems to think that there is something about the theory of Evolution or the big bang theory that makes sense. So for the first time Bella naija, im on your
Creation means that there is a “designer”. Someone out there designed us and our universe. The big bang however is an attempt to explain how the universe developed from a very tiny, dense state into what it is today. They teach “expansion”, which im not willing to go into. Evolution is that the first living organism developed from lifeless matter. Then as it reproduced, it changed into different kinds of living things, ultimately producing all forms of plant and animal life that have ever existed on this earth. That is the theory right there. Evolutionist dont believe in creation. Vee is so right and Ah Ah has a point. Creation and Evolution are two parallel lines that can never meet. They do not complement each other in any way. But trust christians, we love to make our lives so complicated. Confusion everywhere. The pope is so wrong for this.
I am a christian, i believe in creation but i am not anti science. Learning more about the natural world can strengthen your belief in creation. Heck,Famous scientists such as Galileo and Isaac Newton believed in a Creator. Their belief did not conflict with their love for science. Likewise, some scientists today find no conflict between science and belief in creation. Issac studied living things and thought that there was no way everything came about by chance. There had to be a designer. So @ Ah Ah, if you wanna get all technical, Evolution isnt a “fact”. Scientists are still divided on this issue. Gravity is a fact. Evolution isnt. ..Well, Yet. If that makes you feel any better. Yall, seem to think that because we believe in someone out there who is more intelligent and powerful than we are, that automatically makes us stupid or mentally lazy.
@ Toyosi, my dear, Im gonna assume you are a christian. You are so right when you said that God deliberately made man separate from other living things which is the direct opposite of the theory of Evolution and so “Evolution” (the pope’s word not “science”) hasnt made anything clearer. . Adam was HUMAN just like us. If anything, Adam was better than us. He was “perfect” for goodness sakes and even after he sinned , he was almost a 1000yrs old before dying. PPl back then lived for hundreds of years. Living for a hundred years today is a huge accomplishment. We didnt come from apes and we sure havent “evolved” into something special. We have only deteriorated. Yes, we have accomplished what might seem like a lot especially when it comes to technology but think what we would have done/ accomplished if we were perfect like Adam.
The pope said “Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation, because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve.” I have never heard anything so ridiculous from someone who claims to believe in creation. Evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve???? into what exactly?. What is he talking about?. Everything God made, he made according to its kind, so we dont evolve into anything. We simply grow and get bigger which isnt what evolution is about. The words evolution and creation should be in the same sentence only when you are contrasting. There is no middle ground and there is no justifying the mess he spewed. Im gonna say he didnt do his research properly or is simply confused which is so dangerous cos im sure his followers would believe same without doing their own research and of course, thinking critically.
For you evolutionist out there, everything you experience in life teaches you that where there is design, there is a designer. When you see a camera, a plane, or a house, you rightly conclude that someone designed it. Why should you abandon that logic when you consider the human eye, a bird in the sky, or our planet Earth? Engineers often copy traits that they observe in nature so that they can improve their own inventions, and they rightly want others to acknowledge their work. Is it logical to recognize the human inventor and his work and yet fail to acknowledge the Creator and His far superior designs?…..Oh wait!..God forbid that there is someone out there more intelligent than you are so therefore, BAM!!! big bang theory. Everything came about by chance.
Listen, some of us are humble enough to admit that there is a creator doesn’t make us stupid. At the end of the day, its all about evidence and logic. Talk to me when you start making sense cos the theory of evolution simple makes no sense AND has absolutely nothing to do with creation.

And how exactly did he create it vee? It makes sense to say that ‘Charlie went to the shop’; but how did he get there? Did he drive, did he walk or take a bus? That’s what science tries to explain. Whether or not it fully captures all the details is another story entirely.

Science in a way explains it and if you’d taken the time to read the article, you’d understand that that’s what the Pope is saying.

Ah Ah, do you realise that everything that exist in this world was made by somebody; the house we live in, the clothes we wear, the car we drive, the books we use, etc. They didn’t exist by themselves. People made them. But people will rather believe that nature, the world we live in came to being by itself. People will rather believe in nothing than acknoledge the ‘possiblity of a creator’. No scratch that, “the reality of a creator”. I pray God’s light fills this world that all shall see the truth very clearly. We are all little makers like Him (the creator) a reality that hinges on this truth from the Bible “God made us in his own image and likeness”.
May God’s grace be upon us all.

It is okay to accept the ways of God are different to us. Whether it was a bang or no bang, humans will still question it. The bible says the world was created through God’s spoken word and it came to be, We just accept it through faith Heb 11:1,that’s all!.
No spiritual leader has to confirm this before it is accepted or debunked. Spiritual leaders are not GOD!

I challenge someone to join me in burning the videos (I’ve watched all) and creating just 1000 copies for free (or N150 each) distribution. Knowledge is good, and the life you save could be your own.

Pls bellanaija, you guys should stop taking the misquotes from foreign media, saying the Pope said this , he said that,..the Catholic church has never approved of same sex marriage, evolution BS and the likes, previous Popes never supported this and they all followed the same doctrines that the present pope follows, and as a catholic, I have never known the rules to change, and even it does, the pope is not the only one that takes the decision, the Vatican is a city like Lagos, so it will need other peoples approval, though the Pope is the head. The head of Cardinals and other important officials contribute in decisions making, so please get you facts right

The danger in positions like that is people’s capacity for misunderstanding or misrepresentation. The man is basically saying that these theories, more or less, find their validity in creationism. If only people would read and understand what is said, instead of infusing their own meaning.

Some points in support of your argument Chichi.

“Evolution is that the first living organism developed from lifeless matter. Then as it reproduced…”

This source has the same thing:
    I quote…
“Here the idea of evolution is clearer than in Plato, especially for the physical world, which is wholly dominated by purpose. The transition from lifeless to living matter is a gradual one, so that the dividing-line between them is scarcely perceptible. Next to lifeless matter comes the vegetable kingdom, which seems, compared with the inorganic, to have life, but appears lifeless compared with the organic. The transition from plants to animals is again a gradual one. The lowest organisms originate from the primeval slime, or from animal differentiation; there is a continual progression from simple, undeveloped types to the higher and more perfect. As the highest stage, the end and aim of the whole process, man appears; all lower forms are merely unsuccessful attempts to produce him”.

We see here that evolution is really faulty – lifeless birthing life (without any form of the supernatural? or any sort of intervention?) You know like our plastic garbage can decompose and form new things – without external intervention? And again vegetable kingdom that the article refers as appearing lifeless – NO! LEAVES DO NOT APPEAR LIFELESS, they APPEAR AND FEEL ALIVE! Breathing, soft to touch, they grow, they die!

Evolution is a false theory. and THEORIES are never facts until proven. No one can prove evolution – not even by means of archaeology.

Science is big on design and hence a designer – an original creator of something. We have evidence of this in the insistence that sources of knowledge are acknowledge and that one idea stems from another previously thought – intellectual property protection, patent laws, plagiarism… Science loves her creators!

And science is part of life – God is a scientist. He created us and all our thinking capabilities. And we use our thinking to CREATE other things. “Don’t ye know ye are gods”???

One more point- even atheism requires some form of faith. The Big bang theory is a theory – not a fact. You believing in Evolution – key word BELIEVE means you have some level of faith in it! And Faith is not scientific in that science insists on facts and faith on believing even without evidence.

Come on guys, if you think deeply …. we will see without any doubt that life was created and was given… we were created and the only evolution that applies to us is growth, development, acquiring wisdom, knowledge and learning!

The Pope is quoted correctly by BN is definitely wrong. And while we cannot fully imagine how creation was described to happen in holy books, we only believe by faith and by faith plus science aka. theory we can say that GOD CREATED MAN AND THE EARTH. That there is a theory if we are working with theories.

I’m not going to waste my time typing an epistle in the name of refuting your argument; however, I’ll encourage to gain more understanding on evolution.

Also, atheists don’t believe in evolution in the context that you believe in your super intelligent designer (aka God). Evolution does not define our sense of moral neither is it limited to mental development.

The fact that you’re emphasizing on the existence of a designer makes me wonder if you think the world is perfect. Look around you, If God is indeed omnipotent and omnibenevolent as you so imply by defending his existence, how do you explain the problems of evil in the world?

P.S. With the amount of gods that religious people claim to exist, there is a high probability that if in fact a God exist, you’re worshiping the wrong one and would most likely end up in hell.

Abeg you guys don’t be angry o !!! Why haven’t the present apes evolved/why arent they evolving to humans. Just wondering.

      October 29, 2014 at 9:57 pm

Simple answer to your question. Please read:

We are evolved from the same ancestors as apes, we were never actually monkeys ourselves. Like any kind of tree, branches develop irrespective of what the other branches are doing. That’s the same with the evolutionary tree.

Why haven’t apes evolved? They are evolving! It just takes millions of years. And there obviously needs to be evolutionary pressure to drive it. Humans and all other organisms did not just become so in a matter of a few years. The rate of reproduction of the organism is also a factor. Obviously smaller organisms (for example bacteria and viruses) reproduce quicker, are subject to greater evolutionary pressures (e.g vaccination, antibiotics etc) so they have to adapt quicker to survive. Humans, by being generally clever and protecting the most vulnerable members of its species with advanced medical science for healthcare and improved reproductive abilities for al,l end up with a variety of different individuals, thus slowing the process.

If you are genuinely interested in evolution, I can recommend several good books or websites. This is another one of my beefs with religious societies that are meant to be secular. The Nigerian educational system teaches evolution really terribly that I feel sure that biology teachers do not even understand it, not to mention explain it as a theory .(Even if they don’t believe it).

      True secularism for Nigeria!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a really interesting discussion. I’ll try to make this as brief as possible (LOL! I honestly did want to make it brief, but I ended up typing all of this after writing this preface).

@C’est moi, when the Bible says that we were made in God’s image and likeness (Genesis 1:26), it is not talking about our physical bodies; if that were the case, we would all look alike and be the same skin colour. ‘In His image and likeness’ refers to being like Him in our spirit and soul. God does not have a body, so there is no way that our bodies can literally resemble God’s (as He does not have one). He is a Spirit, as we are; therefore it is our spirits that resemble His, and not our bodies. This is why we can connect with Him in Spirit and we can be conformed to His image (2 Corinthians 3:18).

    Now, moving on…

@chichi and @ba, you both have valid arguments and I respect your intelligence and opinions; however, I would invite you to consider this. If evolution is the changing of lifeless matter to living beings (as you have helped us to understand), then it is in fact compatible with the Bible’s account. Some scientists might not acknowledge that there is a designer, but we know that there is. They explain what happened and how it did, without acknowledging who made it happen. Now, I am not saying that science is totally correct (as I do not know a lot about scientific theories in depth); I am just saying that it might help us to understand what exactly happened. Let me elaborate on why I said evolution is compatible with the story of creation. The Bible does say that God moulded man out of dust (Genesis 2:7) before He breathed life into man: Exhibit A of evolution. The theory of evolution does not acknowledge that God had to breathe His life into man for him to be transformed to a living thing, but that does not mean that it is entirely wrong; the theory is just incomplete in its truth. Now, moving on to Exhibit B: animals and plants according to the Bible were formed from the lifeless matter in or on which they exist. (Genesis 1:20-25) E.g. Verse 24 reads: ‘Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind…” God created every living thing out of lifeless matter. Like I said in my primary comment, ‘one day’ in heavenly terms translates to a longer period in earthly time, which explains the ‘time’ that the evolution theory explains it took for things to move on from their original state (lifeless matter) to a different state.

@ba, your first long quote of evolution is very compatible with creation’s story! So is your explanation of evolution @chichi. If you read Genesis 1, there is a progression in the story of creation: lifeless matter first, then vegetables and plants next, then light (not directly relevant to this discussion), then sea creatures and birds, then land creatures. So in that aspect as well, the evolution theory is compatible with the explanation in the Bible. After that, he created man (of course, like I originally stated, I don’t believe we were once apes; we were created specially). So there is one point where I disagree with evolution. But the concept of it does explain how we as humans have evolved over time, according to our adaptation requirements to our environment in different times. Now, evolution also explains how we have genetic mutations that cause things like different races, different types of hair textures, different eye colours, etc. We all have the same ancestor: Adam. The only way that we could have ended up so diverse is by evolution over time.

So in summary, my point is I agree with the Pope, but I also agree with you both in some respects. Science (including the theory of evolution) is not ENTIRELY incompatible with the Bible’s account of creation. That being said, there might be some loopholes in the theory of evolution: the biggest one being not acknowledging WHO made evolution happen by speaking and breathing life, and some explanations which contradict what the Bible tells us e.g. humans evolving from apes (I find that really weird and funny) . But not all of the evolution theory is contradictory to the Bible’s account.

By the way Chichi, yes, I am a Christian 🙂

Christians and Muslims believe in CREATION.

So the statement of Pope is a significant departure which might create controversies.

Some will see it as an attempt to reconcile religious views with the current scientific thoughts.

However there is one religion in the world, which will be fairly comfortable, with what has been said; Hindus, who believe in Sanatan Dharm.

Hindus have no problem with either CREATION or EVOLUTION and they are MORE CLOSE to EVOLUTION.

Hindus believe in CYCLIC THEORY of EVOLUTION, and their theory is more comprehensive.

They Believe and ACCEPT that God sitting in Heavens can NEVER solve the problems of Societies, and problem associated with it, but do answer prayers of individuals, and provide reliefs.

If God wants to give relief in the problems pertaining to societies and other larger problems, He has to come as AVATAR on earth as Human and then provide direction by examples and by Physical actions (KARM).

Lord Ram and Lord Krishna are the examples of the same.

The Pope has said nothing wrong,.. but trust uninformed Nigerians to always misconstrue.
Allow not your faith to blind your thinking.
Who made any of you an authority on religion?
Your religious books have been interpreted differently by different people over time.
Teach thyself to say, I do not know.

That’s true the pope is not a God, he is simply a human , this pope can accept evolution theory but the next pope can denied it but as true christian I believe God created every think, if there is a creation , there should be creator.

Doubters and antagonists alike, may I ask u all a very simple question.. If actually there was such arrant nonsense called EVOLUTION… What stopped the process? at least by now, we should have seen a man evolving into spirit-like animes or ET?? please all you – Doubters and antagonists – go in your quiet corner and ASK GOD for forgiveness!!
