Greece: Kenya’s Kandie Breaks Course Record at Athens Marathon

Kenyan runner Felix Kandie broke the course record of Olympic Champion Stefano Baldini at the Athens Marathon on Sunday with a time of 2 hours 10 minutes and 37 seconds.

According to the online Race News Service, the Kenyan running in warm weather condition, improved the record by 18 seconds and broke his personal best by more than five minutes.

Italian Baldini had won the Olympic gold ten years ago in a time of 2:10:55.

Two time Athens Marathon winner Raymond Bett was second in 2:12:34 while Josphat Chobei completed the Kenyan podium with 2:15:38 for third place.

There were three Kenyans taking the first three places in the women’s race as well.

Naomi Maiyo was the winner with 2:41:06. Defending champion Nancy Rotich followed in 2:41:29 and Linah Chirchir took third with 2:42:41.

The Athens Marathon, which is run on the original course leading from Marathon to the Panathinaikon Stadium in the capital, had a record entry of 13,000 runners.
