If Guilty, How Did he Get Away with It for So Long? Rape Accusations pile against “beloved TV Dad” Bill Cosby

The Cosby Show ABCSo many of us grew up watching Bill Cosby on the highly rated/long running sitcom “The Cosby Show“. For decades, Bill Cosby was revered as “the ultimate dad” due to the role he placed on the show.

Now, at age 77, he is being faced with a barrage of rape and sexual assault accusations. There have been whispers about Bill Cosby’s alleged illicit behaviour for years including a quiet civil settlement to a number of his accusers years ago. However, In the past month alone, 4 different women including former supermodel Janice Dickerson and Wife of Incredible Hulk star Lou Feriggno, Therese Serignese have come forward with their stories, though, the full list of women appears to be much longer.

The women’s stories seem consistent, drugging, followed by sexual assault or rape. Due to these allegations, American TV Network has pulled out of an upcoming TV deal with Cosby.

So BellaNaijarians, what are your thoughts on these allegations? If true, how did he get away with it for so long?

If you are the victim of rape or sexual assault, remember it is not your fault. Please report to the authorities in a timely manner and seek counselling.

I think it’s too early for you to say “i’m so angry and disappointed at this guy”. These are just allegations at the moment and have not been confirmed true.

But why did it take them so long to come forward, any way I think there’s no lady on earth that doesn’t have a sexual abuse story.

Your assumption may actually be closer to being true than you think..

Very true, according to data and reports 70 per cent of women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime from an intimate partner, and this is with the fact that more than half do not report this issues. I believe ALMOST every woman may have encountered sexual abuse (verbal or physical) at one point or the other.

They have come forward in 2014 (including former model Janice Dickinson) and you are still skeptical. Imagine the skepticism they would have faced if they tried to come forward years ago when he was even more relevant than he is today. Two years ago there was a huge scandal in England about Jimmy Savile of the BBC. Multiple women including his sister’s granddaughter came out. Apparently she had told her grandmother about the abuse years before and was told to keep quiet. These are the kinds of things that would stop a woman from not speaking out until she is older, stronger, and she feels someone in the world is more likely to listen to her story.
I’m sorry but there are too many women and he is being too diplomatic and quiet. Anyone who was accused of something like this by so many women would have ditched his lawyer and been screaming blue bloody murder and calling for lawsuits on defamation of character if they were innocent. They would be indignant. They would be furious. He’s just quiet. WHY? I can’t even look at these Cosby Show episodes on Youtube without feeling slightly sick now. I’m now starting to wonder if he molested Phylicia Rashad or even the kids on the show.
And yes, there are are probably tons more sexual abuse stories than you’d expect.

is it possible that he would have been doing this and no one said anything? I don’t now what to believe, I just hope it is not a conspiracy theory. the out of court settlement seems to have triggered off the women. it sounds creepy.

I’m having mixed emotions about all of this. I wouldn’t want to condemn him until more facts emerge.
As for the ladies who purportedly went through this rape, I hope you find peace ( if this is actually true). But why did you wait for so long????! 30 years of Silence?! remember there is a statute of limitations on crimes. If something like this happens, please speak out immediately cos your silence is not helping you and would only make the perpetrator bolder and likely to commit more crimes.

I don’t know what to believe. It is very possible that he could have done this. On the other hand, white women are fond of screaming “rape” when their sexual advances towards a man has been rebuffed. If he did it, sorry Dr. Huxtable but you have to go to jail It would be a sad end to an illustrious career if he did it.

Better late than never. Let us not be unmindful of the fact that we have come a long way wrt what was generally ‘considered’ as sexual abuse years ago and now. Just like MJ, RKelly and co, it will always be hard to try to pin a super-megastar adored worldwide with sexual abuse.

People will accuse you of trying to bring them down, make all kinds of excuse for them. The victim is opportunistic blah the blah, heck! people are actually making dead excuses for him now.

Cosby has offended in his words not African Americans but Black Americans… Blacks keep blaming Whites for their low life expectations which to some extent is quite correct…The average Black American seems hell bent on following some sort of self fulfilling prophecy to doom.
Same as Mexicans but that’s another story altogether..
However he went too far with the George Zimmerman trial..how could he??
Then the Whites were not happy with his mutterings on the Ferguson shooting…
He’s by himself now..enemies circling around..tell you for a fact if he hadn’t been vocal on these sensitive issues nothing would have come to light..
From what we heard about the 70s they were all at it sleeping around.with and anything with reckless abandon and was the catalyst for some of the well known sexual diseases rampant today.. AIDS..HIV..Gonorrhea..Syphilis..Genital Herpes…

Really sick of all these “why did it take them so long to come forward” comments I keep seeing. Who put a statute on the amount of time it takes a victim to finally come to terms with their abuse? There are a myriad of reasons for not speaking out. It could be due to the fear of judgement, leading to the victim feeling they were somehow at fault. Sometimes it’s also just easier to bury the memory of traumatic experiences because speaking on them would have one reliving them all over again.

Do not trust white american women.when they gang up against someone, especiallymin america white /blacks, no one is safe.we all remember MJ.see how they help destroy him.bill has been getting a lot of credit lately and white folks do not like it cos for them , no black person is worthy of achieving anything.they should remain slaves like for ever—-see tea party believes..irrespective of what bill did or did not , I will always stand behind him..that is what the world has turn into.defend your own or be reduced to nothing.who knows who is paying those women.miss dickinson or whatever has no credibility, and has been known to have said demeaning things about black people. she is known to be a loose screw too, love attention of the media like her life depends on it.so am not suprised about her claim.their target now are all black achievers , to destroy them one by one using evrry tty hing possible, especially what society hates like rape, child abuse, huishold aggression e.t.c.they are on a mission and need to be stoped at all cost.get smart about how the world works black people.

It’s easy to have mixed feelings about this issue because of the image we have of Bill Cosby, but wrong is wrong. If you do the crime then you should do the time. 30 years is a long time to keep silent but victims of abuse can hardly explain the deep sense of shame associated with it. How do you as a young teenager want to explain that ‘super daddy’ is raping you. May the truth prevail.

Hmmm.. Bella “how did he get away with it…”? Seems you have already classed him as guilty! I don’t condone rape/sexual harassment in any form but be patient enough to let the whole facts get out-both his and theirs.

    November 20, 2014 at 5:25 pm

My point exactly AsHAnI. Accusations like you said not facts. That’s America for you. Kill before asking questions. Yes he is silent right now, but what difference will it make if he speaks. He says something/doesnt say anything, we believe what we want to believe. These women should be ashamed of themselves, because if the “rape” was awful blah blah, why wait this long? Why 2014? Why not 30 years ago, 15 or even 10 years ago. Am sorry as a woman, i am utterly disappointed in these women. I would come forward, tell whoever who cares to listen, if that ever happened to me. Now his shows were pulled because of “accusations” really America? Is that we’ve become?

Its’ a slow news season in the US now….Americans will build you up and tear you down in a hot minute, especially if you are black…janice dickinson really has no credibity she will do any and everything for fame, lets…let the investigation commence and let’s see if these allegations are true. Look at what they are doing to obama…even the democrats cannot bear it any longer seeing a black man as the president…when you live in the US as a person of color you better watch your back every second and never lose your guard be careful of what info u share with ppl and how you conduct yourself. Some ppl are really hateful, and when u are a person of color beware!!! some black men were standing on my street talking against a car, and the neighbors called the cops on them for no reason..

Mmmhh.I don’t really know what to say.but why is all superstars always accuse of child abuse, rape?.is it a way of bringing them down or the stories really true.my growing up was with the bill cosby show and I love the family and the settings.let’s not judge him until he is proven guilty cos there might be more to this.

I don’t know who is lying but i would say this. There is a story during civil the rights of two white girls who accused a group of boys for rape they didn’t commit. They hanged all of them except two or so they were the ones who lived to tell the story. If you want read more here it is. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottsboro_Boys

Bella Naija…Have you ever heard of innocent until proven otherwise?
Years back a lady went to court claiming that Cosby was her father. The media blew it up but by the end of the day, paternity test proved his innocence.
Why would this case come up now that he has this contract with Netflix?
His lawyers are fighting back we just need to wait and let things unfold.

BTW, that someone settled a case out of court does not mean that they are guilty. Sometimes, it is a cheaper alternative.

One thing with American society is that they will build you up and destroy you in a second.
I still can’t believe how Paula Dean was brought down.

I read a story by one of the so called victims,Therese Serigneses. At a point it didn’t make sense. You go to see a man’s show for the first time, (after he invited you in person just seeing you for the first time in a hotel) left alone with him after everyone else had left, and just because he is a screen big shot, he hands you a pill and a glass of water and you took without asking…most of these women put themselves in that position and I hate the way they all put themselves out like they where so vulnerable at the time and that it wasn’t consensual sex. I’m not trying to make it right, (that is if it is true) but I am sure most of these ladies thought they could hit fame just by getting cosy with a celebrity…

More than one of the ladies spoke about the rape in years past, they were a few settlements here and there. It has become a big scandal now because of social media, i hear janice dickson has spoken about it severally and mentioned something about it in her book
