Pres. Jonathan Likens Nigeria’s Challenges to Israelites’ Journey to Canaan

World Leaders Gather For Nuclear Security Summit 2014President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday likened the current challenges facing the country to the hardship encountered by the Israelites on their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land.

Jonathan spoke during his foster daughter’s wedding thanksgiving service at the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Life Camp, Abuja.

He told the congregation that just as the Israelites eventually made it to Canaan despite the numerous challenges that confronted them on the way, Nigeria would get to its desired destination.

The president urged Nigerians to continue to support the government and pray for the country, adding that government would keep doing its best to overcome the challenges.

“This is a period in which the whole world is being challenged, just like some of the passages we read.
“Whenever I think about all these happenings in Nigeria it makes me remember the journey of the Israelites from Egypt to the Promised Land.

“When God promised they were going to be given a land full of milk and honey, ordinarily one would have expected them to just walk in and get the milk and honey.

“But they had to cross the Red Sea; that was a challenge. They had to meet people like Annas and others. That was a big challenge, but because God wanted them to be there they were able to get there.

“Surely, we will get to where we want to go as a nation. We may have the road bumps, we may have the obstacles but we will crush them and pass them.

“All we want to request is your continued support and your prayers, and we promise we will continue to do our best.’’
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the thanksgiving service followed the wedding of the president’s foster daughter, Inebharapu Paul, with Simeon Onyemaechi, on Saturday.
The ceremony, which held at the Ecumenical Centre, Abuja, had attracted important dignitaries including former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The wedding reception was later held at the International Conference Centre in Abuja.

While thanking God for success in the entire marriage process, Jonathan asked the congregation to join him in prayers for peace and happiness to reign in the couple’s home.

The president was joined by his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan; his mother, Eunice, and some of his aides.

NAN also reports that special prayers were offered by the Primate of the Anglican Church, the Most Revd, Nicholas Okoh, for couple, the first family and for the nation.

He later presented a carton of the Anglican annual devotional as a gift to the president as well as the church’s hymn books and calendar to the couple.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in May 1976 to gather and distribute news on Nigeria and cover events of interest to Nigeria at the international level for the benefit of the Nigerian Media and the Public.

What exactly does Nigeria’s promised land or destination look like? Constant power and water supply? Corruption free? Security? These are normal things in any fairly developed country, so while the world may be challenged, challenges come on different levels. According to the Bible, the Israelites were God’s chosen. Nigerians are NOT God’s chosen people, so find a better reason (excuse) for a promising future, and stop blaspheming. LOL.

Oh ye pessimistic anonymous. Yes you did answer yourself. Those are the things a FAIRLY DEVELOPED COUNTRY is supposed to have. Nigeria is classified under a developing country. We are moving forward whether your myopic eyes can see it or not. And you said Nigerians are not God’s chosen people? My dear you are on you own when it comes to that one. Yes we are facin trials and tribulations, countries also have their own issues but you cannot develop if you do not meet challenges and overcome. It might take a while but we are getting there and as a matter of fact, we are in the heat of the storm which means it will soon be over .

You must be like 15 years old to think that we are actually moving forward. Instagram access does not count by the way. Go and speak with your older family members to get a true assessment. Also, if you can tell me where in the Bible Nigerians are mentioned (or even suggested) to be God’s chosen, I’d love to know.

It i a very interesting comparison which we as Nigerians like because of the end result. But the journey and problems faced will vary. Israel in history and even in that period was leaving an external foe, we as Nigerians I believe are the creators of our own problems or the obstacles , the end result is fine but the challenges are native to each group. I support the end but ‘passing and crushing’ each other to get there may not be the solution.

How I wish my comment could reach that foolish man. It’s horrible how people twist the bible to favor them. As another blogger asked was Moses chopping money carelessly? Was Moses wife parading the whole place while there is chaos in the whole of North East Nigeria? Well, God is for Us All and I know He see’s everything.
GEJ hush ur mouth before I….

Does this man possess a primary six certificate? His statements are sickening. May the Lord deliver us from this inept, clueless and ‘olodo’ president. Can’t believe this is coming from a president. If not for immunity, he suppose to be in jail with his band of travellers. Israelites journey ko, Egyptians journey ni.
